I wasn't interested in the AOE Series after I played the first two (Age of Empires I and II) but I went to my friends house the other day and when I played this game, I simply fliped.
It has the perfect balance of elements which make it Amazing compared to other games like Empire Earth II and Civilizations III which were the ones I played most. The RPG things really make it much more interesting than its rivals.
I dont have much to say... but just buy it. There is no question about it. Plus it works on almost any PC. I have this 2 year-old Toshiba laptop (not upgraded since) and I just set the Colours to 16, and it works like a charm.
If back in Age of Empires II days, you though it just couldn't get any better than this, you were defenately wrong... Cuz it just did! And the expansions are awesome too, check 'em out!
