Alan Wake: The Signal User Review
Well, it's short, sweet, and to the point but doesn't really get you anywhere.

This short DLC continues the main story but only slightly. You find yourself battling within your own head, dreams, and nightmares. In truth, it's a short stint of a bunch of other random battles simply to get to the story progressing cinematic. lol There isn't much in the way of story over the breadth of the episode but the end provides some clues as to what is now going on with Wake after the conclusion of the main game.
If you're a die hard Alan Wake fan then, by all means, play it. However, there isn't much need to dive into this one if you were only a moderate fan of the first game. I loved the first in the series so I jumped in. Unfortunately, not much there so I won't be playing The Writer. I am excited, however, about Alan Wake 2 at this point.
It's too bad they didn't just tie the two DLCs together to make one bigger episode. That, I feel, would be better worth the money.
