What's the deal with the wooden crank?

Ok, I've played through this game and I couldn't find anything to use the wooden crank on, is this just a red herring, or did I miss something?

Ha! I just broke that door by putting a pile of boxes under it so I could just walk through at my own leisure. Well thanks for the answer on that one.

The room you get it in, you know the door in the middle that separates the 2? How you have to turn the wheel to open it? Well, if you solve the puzzle in the room farther back 2nd, the wheel falls off, and you have to use the wooden crank on it to open. If you solve the puzzle in the room closer to the exit door, you can just leave.
