Your thoughts on AC3

So i bought the game yesterday and i'm playing it today. I honestly don't know what to think of the game at the moment, i'm playing act/season 1 and all i can do is yawn through it. I keep wondering when i'm going to be able to play the new native assassin. Also i swear the battle controls have slightly changed. I don't remember O being counter, i'm sure it was L1. I'm finding it slightly difficult to attack and counter at the same time unlike Assassins Creed 2 where it was easy to fight/defend and all. When it comes to bugs, all i can say is that it didn't take more than 5 minutes to see a floating object. Unlocking doors was another "urgh" for me and i'm like "why couldnt you just press and hold O like you do with pick pocketing" I'm hoping this game will be good later on but at the moment i'm finding it rather icky picky. Another thing is how do you get those flying paper looking things, i can't remember its name, but it just floats and flys away. It returns later on but i just can't seem to catch it.
Last but not least, is anyone else having a rather annoying bug when you finnish a cut scene from a new mission, you appear outside the building/inn and the redcoats appear out of nowhere and just push you because you/they are in the way. At first i thought it was me, but it's happened more than 5 times at least :/
I'm not saying its a bad game, but it does seem to have some serious annoying problems for me, does anyone else have the same feeling or do most of you feel like it's very easy to play and all.

Go jump off a bridge and end it.The intro does get kinda painful. The game picks up quite a bit once you are playing as connor in full gear. But I agree with the combat change, I personally don't find it more difficult just more simple. The old combat took more skill and was much more enjoyable in my opinion. To me it's not the masterpiece some people thought it would be but overall it is a good game.

"Risk everything or gain nothing"
"Improvise, adapt, and overcome"
"Power cannot be given, it is taken"
"With great power, comes great responsibility"I've gotta say I'm really impressed with the game but highly disappointed at the same time. The game feels very unfinished and just not polished as it should be. I have entire cut scenes where people are glitched together because of random people walking by. Floating objects is a constant. The fact that as Connor when you wear a different color outfit it change to the original during cut scenes.
Or as young connor before you have the hidden blades you go through the animations and the sounds of using them when fighitng bears and other creatures. Very annoying. I've noticed that fighting with the stone night or the dirk that its the same animation process as the hatchett. wtf?
I love it. its really great. But it just needs a little fine tuning.

The beginning is a little tedious considering how much you want to play as Connor right off the bat. They have you play as Haytham first, then they go into how Connor came about, grew up, etc etc. I think they did a good job telling his origin, but man dude, it sure was difficult going through the first 5 sequences to finally get the robes and become an Assassin. It's bearable though if you look at the beginning as rising action, sort of like in a book. Everything is being set up for the grand finale. And it was.
The fighting is different, A LOT different from the other ACs. But once you figure out O is parry, X is Stun, XX is disarm, and so on, the fighting gets really fun. Even the Jagers become easy once you figure out how to take them down, though it does become a little monotonous, each type of guard having a certain weakness that can always be exploited. But it's all good fun.
I thought the lockpicking was a good addition personally. It makes finding claiming treasure more enjoyable. I mean, let's face it, who is going to leave a box full of all kinds of crap, not to mention hundreds of shillings or pounds or whatever they had for money back then, without having a lock on it. It just makes sense. Although, the lockpicking is too easy.
The missing almanac pages can be little challenging to get. You just have to move your character over the pages to attain them, assuming you can close the distance between them.
The game definately lacks some polish. Glitches are a problem... sometimes when I move into other areas my pistols will change into other ones or disappear. Not cool ubi. I thought the Naval aspect of the game was going to allow us to freely take our ship up and down the coast too. I guess not. They seemed to mislead us on that one. I wanted to see my ship docked at the ports in NY. Oh well. And there's a alot of other stuff too that seems to bug me about the game. Connor not being able to put his hood back up at the end of the game is a REAL pain for me. I'm pretty pissed about that. Jagers popping up out of nowhere and disappearing too... kinda annoying. Especially when you're out in the wilderness attacking a fort, and you have the highest notoriety. Where are these Jagers supposed to be coming from? I'm out in the freakin' wilderness!
And then there's cutscenes. There're parts where characters are speaking but their mouths aren't moving. And sometimes when you're trying to complete a Homestead mission the icon for initiation doesn't appear. Horse movement over terrain and rocks gets real annoying when you're trying to pursue. There's a lot of little things that are unpolished and annoying. Overall it is very easy to play, but the optional objectives are a bit ridiculous and sometimes infuriating when trying to complete.

- Nov 3, 2012 1:32 pm GMTI finished playing the father and finally got to be Conner in the Assassin uniform. The game is getting better, but i can't say AC3 is as good as AC2. I can't seem to whistle as Conner when around corners unlike the 1st character, i don't know if its a move/ability you learn after you get to wear the Assassin's uniform. Glitches are a slight problem, i hated appearing out of buildings as the first guy, these soldiers appear out of know where and continue to push me. I got sick of it so i just ended up killing them. Some parts of the game are confusing while others are easy, i'm just waiting for the epic war fights between America and the British Empire later on (if it ever happens like it did in the trailers). I hope it gets better later on though :)

Yea, the combat doesn't feel the same for me compared to the old ACs. It just felt so fluent back then, but they seem to have changed it a bit and I'm having a hard time getting used to it. Not saying their combat system is bad, but I definitely need some more time getting used to it. I was fine with the old system, I would have been happy if they kept it like that.
As for floating objects, I have encountered at least 4 or 5. There was a floating carcass, and a few floating guns. Also, I felt it started off really slow, but I know they need all that time to introduce the characters and tell the story so it is forgiven.

- Nov 4, 2012 8:09 am GMTWhich guys? The Jagers or the Brutes? Witht he Brutes you just have to press x to stun them, press it twice to disarm them, and three times to trip them. Tripping them is the best option, because then you can kill them easily. But whenever you trip someone and go for the kill someone else ALWAYS attacks to prevent you. So be careful you parry and counter those attacks. The Jagers did seem extremely difficult at first, but they're nothing really. You have to stun them and disarm them. So, X or A twice. Once you do that, you can keep attacking them till you kill them. Just watch out for other Jagers attacking from behind. And if they do, remember to parry, stun, and disarm them, because nothing else will work other then bullets, bombs, poison darts etc. Once you learn how to kill each soldier, it's all just a matter of not making any mistakes and remembering how to kill each soldier fluidly. Hope this helped you.

- Jan 10, 2013 9:06 am GMTHaving enjoyed all the other AC games I must say I've never swore at the TV so much as I have with this one. I finally gave up on it trying to pursue Charles Lee! It's very glitchy, unbelievably annoying, especially in the missions; there's no tutorial for fighting so for half the game I was button mashing wildly; Early on when being chased by guards there was literally no let up as there were guards around every corner, even when trying to hide a guard would come right up to you, Whats the point of that, very frustrating! Trading; whats the point of that except for some delivery missions worth $500 or $1000, very unintuitive menu; One mission early on, killing some captain on a ship, just finished itself, others seemed unnaturally finicky...etc very frustrating. Enjoyed the hunting though.

I'm about half-way through and I'm pretty disappointed with it, too.
1) Graphics: sure it looks amazing, but a lot of edges constantly flicker - especially when moving the camera. Then there's the frame rate drop in cities when you're running around. Urch. Then there's the numerous glitches: animals vanishing into walls, guards' weapons floating in the air, lots of pop-up etc.
2) The game feels unfinished. Assassin missions just kinda start with no pre-amble, then you kill some guy innocently wandering around on the map, then the assassination contract is over: no story, no explanation, no challenge etc. Likewise the letter delivery: there're no cut-scenes or dialogue surrounding them. You press 'o' to deliver a letter, the screen flashes white... and that's it??
3) Combat too easy - chaining kills together used to be at least kinda tricky, but I can chain kill 15+ guards with (literally) my eyes closed.
4) The interface. OH GOD THE INTERFACE. The crafting/Artisan/convoy system is so poorly explained and confusing to look at that I've had to resort to online guides to tell me what the hell is going on. The game DOESN'T TELL YOU that to level up Artisans you have to wait until you enter specific memory sequences and missions become available. I spend more time navigating confusing menus that actually playing the game, it feels.
5) I feel that the free-running in trees has been a bit missold: you can only run in VERY pre-determined tree-top routes, and only certain (visually different) trees are climbable: big shame - I was expecting more freedom.
6) Conor is boring
7) Upgrading Conor's equipment (pouches etc) isn't explained in the game, it feels like it's deliberately hidden/burried in the crafting system which, as I've said above, is confusing as hell.
8) NO AMBIENT MUSIC!!!! This is the absolute game-killer for me. I loved the music in previous AC games: emotive, moving, and very evocative of place: wandering around Rome or Venice or Constantinople was a joy because the music was so beautiful and inspiring. Spending an hour running around in ACIII with nothing but footsteps and bird songs feels oddly oppressive: in silence actually gives me a headache after a while.
9) Free running in cities is much harder than previous AC games: the buildings are so spaced apart and low-level that I find it VERY difficult to get any kind of 'flow' going.
10) If you become VERY notorious, you may as well quit and re-load, as the constant Red Coats around every corner chasing you in huge numbers is just impossible to manage. I don't like spending 20+ mins trying to become anonymous, only to be seen through a wall again by some guard.
Urch *walks off ranting*...

So we have a consensus... this game pretty much sucks.
It's UBIsoft... more and more I have come to expect UBIsoft's PC versions to kinda suck. This game however is a new low. It's like they didn't even try.
What really upset me however was the gamespot provided meta critic scores which were high. Upon further examination I realized that even the reviews that panned (did not like) the game had high scores above 80% with the exception of one. Similarrly there seemed to be a lot of reviews with strangly high scores for a game that the coresponding review seemed to find a fair amount of fault with the game.- Please wait. [/QUOTE] I feel completely robbed by my pride. GameSpot gave AC3 8.5 score, but AC Revelations 8.0, and AC Revelations is far better than AC3. In AC3 they made the game super complicated. The fighting became button smashing, the recruits became complected. The shops are gone, the armor is missing, the optional objectives are very, very frustrating to accomplish. Connor is the anti-christ of any Assassin character. Altair was mild, Ezio was a charmer, but Connor is just plain dumb and arrogant. I don't think this game is good, I find myself hating it more than once in an hour, just because everything is so complicated! What's with the crafting, and the assassination contracts? There's no story behind any of it. It takes me 1 second to assassinate. FML :(

- Jan 26, 2013 11:29 am GMTStrongly disagree that Revelations was better than AC3. No denying AC3 was flawed, but I still enjoyed it a lot. The only parts of Revelations I truly enjoyed were Altair's missions and Ezio's goodbye. The rest was pure filler. The plotline with the Sultan was just tacked on. Den Defense was very poorly executed and pointless considering you could just liberate the den if you failed. Crafting bombs was a nice idea but ultimately unnecessary.

I'm going through sequence 7 and I'm bored to tears.
I thought the original was great, the second one took everything about that and improved upon it ten fold, one of my favourite games on the 360. Then brotherhood came along and added in all this crap that just wasn't necessary in the slightest, the story took a nosedive and imo it should of been the multiplayer expansion to two. Revelations I've never played, but from what I've heard it should of been the single player expansion.
Now three comes along and I just don't know what the **** they were thinking. Instead of trying to improve upon the core mechanics like two did they just added a few new weapons and some really questionable combat mechanics. The shooting is pathetic and clearly just half assed. The naval missions are good but again could of been MUCH better. The managing of the homestead is just pointless, I buy an assassins creed game for ASSASSINATING PEOPLE. Which brings me to the main problem I've had so far, the actual missions are just terrible. Why create a huge open world when every mission throws you down a linear path designed specifically for one route, as indicated by the 'full synchronization' BS.
I'd of loved the countryside free running if it also hadn't been so half assed, and the addition of animals if it hadn't been so completely terrible due to it being quick time events.
Added to that the beyond boring story, trailed along by endless 'Oh look it's that guy' moments just shows how out of touch the guys making these games have gotten.
IMO the series peaked with two, since then it's just been an endless cash grab. Nothing since two has been at all as expansive or in depth, or even well made. It's just throwing single game gadgets at the fans in order for them to fork out money.
Ubisoft are quickly becoming my most detested game developer. Every series they own has been run into the ground with poor design choices at every turn, uninspired gameplay mechanics and a general lack of polish to just about anything they do. If they simply set a goal for their games and stopped trying to shoehorn in all this unnecessary crap for the sake of mass appeal it'd do wonders. Instead we get games that simply have no focus, and thus suffer from a lack of any kind of concise direction.
If the new splinter cell is terrible I won't be buying a game of theirs again.

Damn gamers are such divas sometimes. Just look at your complains guy, look at it. And then, go play Aliens: Colonial Marines. You'll have yet another AC game to gnash on come november.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

I tried to like AC3 for what it is, but it is a poor upgrade of two. In fact I'd go so far as to say it's a step backwards. No amount of added gizmos is going to change that. The main complaints brought up about 3, mainly it being glitchy and boring, are imo completely justified and overall the game completely missed what it set out to do and it's potential by a mile.
Comparing what should of been an extremely good game from every angle to a FPS that was clearly going to be archaic by todays standards is not what I'd call an argument in favour of AC3.

I really agree with a lot of what you said but I'll definitely second your point above. The music in all the Ezio games was truly amazing. The theme music for Ezio and his family, the ambient music for the cities, the "determined" and "full of concentration" music you get during missions, were all awesome. Then AC3 comes along and the music is utterly lacking. I'm shocked.
I also felt the same way about the sound effects. The digital effects you get from the animus in the earlier games was pretty good but they felt weaker in AC3. The first time I really started to notice a difference was the sound you get when you synchronize a viewpoint. The sound you get from that struck me as the audio equivalent of poo :-/.

If the game had no bugs and glitches; better frame-rate; interesting side missions; better main missions; a better ending; better stealth mechanics; better sound design (mostly just by making the game louder since I for some reason had to turn my home theater system's volume up much louder than any other game), and have Conner a bit more interesting, I think I could have liked it. This game borders on mediocre, with many things that make otherwise impressive aspects poor.

- Apr 2, 2013 2:24 am GMTI agree. Honest opinion from casual player of this series who enjoyed the original: This game is just not very entertaining. Side missions are very boring, main missions are all very similar and forgettable. I think a lot of big fans of the series will defend it, but it's clear they are just cranking these things out assembly line style, which sadly happens to some series' once they develop a devoted fanbase. The story is weak. You can beat the whole game by just pressing two buttons in the EXACT same way every time without the slightest semblance of a strategy. If you are the kind of gamer who likes games which challenge and reward you, you will not enjoy this game. It is truly a lowest common denominator type thing
