I couldnt avoid all the hype surrounding AC3, so i wanted to play all the previous games in the series. Naturally, i started with the original and i must say this game is a huge disappointment. Now, i know its a few years old so i dont want to be so harsh, but its soooo repetitive and the combat is super clunky. I've heard that starting with AC2 the franchise has seen improvements, but the bad taste AC1 has left in my mouth is really turning me off the other games.

Are the improvements made in AC2 revolutionary enough that its worth a playthrough? To use the God of War and Uncharted series as examples, there were improvements made over the course of sequels, but the original games are still amazing games in their own right where you can see how robust the canvas already is. With AC1 i just dont see it.

I beaten all the other games except this one and started playing it a few days ago.Unfortunately, when you call combat clunky, it's actually way harder than all the other games. Comparing this to God of War is ridiculous, because God of War's fighting stays pretty much extremely the same while I notice how big the changes are of this to Assassin's creed 2.

I'm actually surprised how a few elements of this was not carried over. And the the few places I visited is BREATHTAKING!! Oh wow! And the big picture of the plot is the absolute main reason why there HAS to be sequels

Besides the "clunky" controls, the rest of the game is pretty damn cool! The game still pulls my interest. And it's in a different time period so everything's still fresh. I think for a lot of the people looking forward for AC3, they PRoBABLY havent played the first game either, so your disappointment should not at all affect your enjoyment of the sequels

ACII was what AC should have been. Really they took everyhing good about AC(the smooth climbing controls, the beautiful enviorments, and the interesting story), and fixed most of the annoying things about it.

You really should just play it to see for yourself.

My sentiments exactly but it's fun. Sort of addictive, I'm sure once I keep improving I'll get better. It's a steep learning curve for me but that what I like most about this game.

Recently supporting Sony products again. Just got a PS3. May get a VITA once its price drops. Will still support Nintendo.

I personally liked AC1 as well. When you aren't so picky about how the game is laid out and enjoy it for what it is, all of the annoying stuff that AC1 has aren't as bad as you originally thought. Yes it gets repetitive, but I was only interested in AC simply because of all the killing to begin with. Mission accomplished, and the great AC series plot is simply icing on the cake.

With that said, AC2 has made leaps and bounds in terms of improvement so you'll definitely fall in love with that one and there are very few reasons to not like it. AC1 is still worth playing though for the sake of Altair's story and simply cause it's the first one.

AC2 was amazing and a lot better. You wont regret it if you play it.

AC is very repetitive. AC2 is not.

AC2 is very, very different. Just like someone else said, it keeps the basic elements such as free running, assassinating, the combat system... And that's about it. They also cleaned it up a bit. Free running is faster, assassinating is much easier now as you don't have to kill someone with the hidden blade, and also the combat system has been cleaned up a lot.

In AC you followed a pattern. Go to city, gather information, kill target, return to Masyaf, repeat. In AC2 there is an actual variety in what you do. The game is much more fluid and it doesn't bore you.

One thing that they added is an economy. You can buy your own weapons and armor and also it gives the little things you do more of a purpose.

AC2 is a huge, huge improvement on AC. It's definitely worth a shot. I wouldn't give up on the series. It gets better. You could probably ask anyone and they would say the same thing.

Yes. Ur opinion is def valid, but is a minority opinion. I mean I have my opinion of what how other games are overrated (Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption IMO), but most ppl love it. But ya, since the majority of ppl like this game, including me, it warrants sequels.

This game is great, I don't know why it receives a lot of hate. Unless of course, the more recent installments were just that much of a better experience which is a little unfair. Still, this game is great. Btw TC, comparing this game's combat to God of War's all for the simple fact that it has combat isn't good for your credibility. Just my 2 cents.

I played the games hella out of sequence too. AC2 first, which I absolutely loved. Every aspect was enjoyable, and I just so happen to be a fan of 100% and this game had bang for its buck.
Then went into AC Brotherhood which I thought was ok except the story had no pull on me whatsoever. Other than that it was still the same great taste of AC2.
From that, I played AC Bloodlines which I loved as well, but not for any reason I liked AC2. All the mechanics were watered down, but they were perfect for pick up and go Assassin-ing.
Now Im playing AC1 and its decent, reminds me alot of the PSP game, but Im sure itll surpass it by leaps and bounds. Manly Im playing it so I can jump into Revelations and have some good insight into Altairs character.

Dont let ac1 bring you down, this series is gold, even if the newest ones are rehashes of 2's excellent formula. Least you could do is wait for AC3 which will hands down be jaw dropping for fans and haters alike.

Number II is the best by far, then Brotherhood. Don't even bother with Revelations, they completely killed the fun.

Anyways, nobody should start with this one. They've made vast improvements since.

Yes, people should start with this one. Just because the sequels made vast improvements (as well as several big steps backward) doesn't mean you shouldn't start at the beginning. The series is EXTREMELY story heavy, and frankly AC2 does a bad job at explaining what happened in AC1.

Hey TC, I just started AC1 and although it's fun, I do agree with most of what you said. AC2 was the first one I played and was one of my favorite all time games. It got me hooked on the series. I would recommend you take a break from Assassins creed altogether for a while then come back and try AC2, I think you'll like it.

Whether a sequel was warranted or not, I'm glad they made one.

From what I remember one of the makers of the game actually said in the lead up to AC2 that AC1 was more of a proof of concept. They knew it was repetitive, but they couldn't really borrow ideas for an open world 12th century game from any other game. [Some might consider this part a spoiler, but play any of the games for more than 5 minutes and the spoiler is gone] Compare the modern day part from AC1 to the others and there's a huge difference, in AC1 you can only get out when the story calls for it, but afterward you can get out when you want and sometimes you're forced too for story reasons, but you can still pop out even when the story doesn't call for it.

I'll assume you made up your mind by this point, but I'll be another to say AC2 is a large improvement over the first. The first did a couple things better, mostly involving atmosphere and a sense of planning, but almost everything is better in the later games.

The first was the best for me, I loved everything about it, the best part was the ending. I was like wtf?! You didn't expect some crazy stuff like that happening and how jesus was using the orb. The ending was half the reason of why I continued the series.

AC2's ending was jaw dropping too, better gameplay.

And brotherhood which I just passed today was no where near as good as the last 2 in terms of the end. But I can honestly say I didn't see it coming that kill. but I had expectations of a jawdropping ending which was not met. but still enjoyed the game.
    Now on to revelations!!

I literally kept playing this game because the story got kinda interesting and I wanted to see what would happen next. I got tired of the gameplay just a few hours in.

Why do people take major huffs when someone compares a game to another? I mean it should really be clear that the TC was comparing the progression of those other game series, not comparing the actual gameplay. Some people just have to pick fault with every little thing.
  • Nov 15, 2012 3:16 am GMT
I assume you are commenting specifically on my post? I don't how your opinion contradicts with mine. God of war did remain consistent with its gameplay as it progresses thrughout the series?

Well, I got some good new for you, TC! Some of the non "boring" parts of the first game has been incorporated to the latest game! It's amazing!
