Can this game be seen as a sequel to Nolan's The Dark Knight? (no spoilers)

I've seen Nolans trilogy, but I'm yet to play this game, and know very little about the plot. A friend once said a few years back that this game is sort of a sequel to the film but not really - is this somewhat accurate?

I guess it could be, but it follows the continuity of the comic book, from what I understand. Although I suppose nothing really contradicts the movies.

No, it doesn't have the same continuity. There are a number of concrete reasons but some of them are either game or movie spoilers. The Nolan movies are meant to represent a more realistic universe whereas the Arkhamverse explores the more fantastical sci-fi elements present in the comics and cartoons such as a giant crocodile man and evil plants.

EDIT: I forgot you said you've seen the trilogy. You were talking about no game spoilers. The following is a Dark Knight spoiler: For one thing, Two-Face appears in Arkham City but is killed at the end of the Dark Knight, so Arkham Asylum cannot be a sequel to TDK.

The Lego games prove that even dismemberment can be cute.

What exactly does he mean by this? >_>

If he's saying it's not technically an actual sequel, but it draws a lot of inspiration from the movies or something, that might actually be true. For example, I may be wrong, but I feel like Batman Begins was what introduced the concept of Batman using his normal cape as a glider, as opposed to using a separate hang-glider. Or at least made it more popular.

And even though Batman being a ninja has always kind of been part of his character, I think he was more commonly seen as that guy who's always squaring off against eccentric supervillains. Scenes like that dock scene in Begins might have brought back more emphasis on him lurking in the shadows picking off lowly mooks one-by-one and scaring the s*** out of them, hence the stealth segments in this game.

I think your friend probably meant this (explanation will include The Dark Knight SPOILERS):

The Joker is arrested at the end of TDK. Joker starts arrested in this game.

I would say this game is more like a darker version of the animated series.

If anything, this game is based off of the universe portrayed in modern Batman comics. Like a previous poster said, Nolan's films are a more realistic take on the Batman.

Also, being someone who grew up watching Batman The Animated Series, it also definitely feels like a more mature version of that... I have to agree. The voice actors really kept the personalities the same. They evolved a little too. Just enough to fit the darker, more mature setting that the Arkham Series presents. They are the definitive voices of these characters, for sure.

I don't know how anyone could like Nolans Batman movies after playing this. The storyline is so much better in this game.
