About the Awards

GameSpot's Best of 2010 awards cover special achievements in the field of advancements for games, dubious honors for less-than-admirable qualities, and full awards for individual genres and every major platform. Nominations and awards are the result of rigorous debate among GameSpot's editors, who select up to five finalists and one winner for almost every category (the Game of the Year category includes up to 10 finalists). To qualify for an editorial award, games must have been reviewed by GameSpot between January 1, 2010, and November 30, 2010.

Award categories are intended to call out those games that truly deserve the attention--therefore, while each award is meaningful, it's considered an honor simply to be nominated.

Platform Awards

I wouldn't call the campaign repetitive. There are missions where you control a small amount of units. One where you only control a single unit, even. There's a mission where you rob trains. One mission works like territory control, with a twist. There are a few where you just defend and optionally do other objectives. Ones where you play as Protoss. One where you need to just gather minerals and lava surges raise/fall. One with a day/night cycle with day and night working very differently. One where the map is overrun and you need to transport troops around carefully. One with fields that make your units constantly take damage. There's also a few parts in the story where you've got a choice that affects the story and the units you get. Then there's even a secret mission I won't spoil here. Your tech choices also affect what strategies work best. SC1, WC3, Dawn of War 2 don't come close to SC2's campaign, imo. Of course good singleplayer games can beat it, and the story of SC2 is pretty average, imo.

@L0s3rx Thanks :D, Well i'm really more of an strategic gamer, i did like dragon age origins but it has some serious strategic combat within. Mass effect is a great game, but i'm only a couple of hours invested so can't really say much about it. Too bad a lot of people looked forward to the SC campeign, i didn't even touch it yet. I love competition and laid FPS behind me 10 years ago. So i'm really enjoying SC2 where there is endless and epic competitive gameplay on everones level. Everyone looks for something different within a game, i really do know both are great games and it was a close call. But in the end, does it really matter who won the goty? You have a great game and i have a great game i'm thanking the game industry for both games :D.

@madmenno Now THAT is a well-put argument. Well done, sir, honestly. I give you a thumbs-up because of that. :] I don't think SC2 is a bad game, at all. I just think the multiplayer carried the game into GotY status, which isn't really fair because games like Mass Effect 2 (that truly are incredible, memorable, and leave a lasting impression on you) that don't have multiplayer sections get the shaft because they only spread via word of mouth from friends and advertising. There's no online portion where people will always hear of it. I think that games should be rated as a whole, not just on a partial level. Mass Effect 2 was a quality game, and the story was absolutely beautiful, well thought out, and intricate. StarCraft 2 is a wonderfully balanced multiplayer game, but it has a very lacklustre single player. The single player was what a lot of the people (like me) were really looking forward to. StarCraft has a very well embedded fanbase on YouTube and TeamLiquid and other such forums. I love StarCraft 2 custom maps. Truthfully, I have so much fun with them especially with friends. Melee is rewarding to those who grind it, but to those who don't, this game is really empty. Mass Effect 2 is a story. Almost anyone can enjoy a great story. That's all I'm saying.

madmenno

@L0s3rx I'm probably wrong again but now i see your saying it's about the story and how it's worked out. Thats not really fair as mass effect is an RPG and is story driven. Where a RTS it's core lies with multiplayer and balance where story comes second. Like i already said they are 2 really different games and in the end it's all about taste. But one thing is for sure, starcraft had a huge community and now it's even larger. Look at all those youtube channels, competitions etc. Theres finally a "hardcore" game out there and i have waited many many years for that. Blizzard delivered and they deserved to win goty.

L0s3rx
L0s3rx

@madmenno That isn't what I'm saying. For example, StarCraft 2 is basically only being lauded for its stellar Multiplayer because its a very popular e-sport. That's, frankly, it. To ignore that the campaign was utterly lacklustre is both ignorant and blind. They had how many years to work up a good story, and they ship to us a crappy, 17 hour campaign that really wasn't consistent with the rest of the franchise at all?

madmenno
madmenno

@L0s3rx What point are you trying to make? Afaik Mass effect doesn't support multiplayer so it would not be elegible for goty. Wich is obviously a dumb statement.

madmenno
madmenno

I do not understand either. For what i have heard SC2 has a pretty good single player campeign. But what the game really is about is multiplayer, it is THE best MP game nowadays. It has a huge fanbase, big prices can be won for the best players etc. But i guess everyone that owns starcraft does not have time for these chats (my PC broke 2 days ago :D). And the people that vote mass effect really don't like there game that much and are chit chatting here.

I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about the campaign. Despite Raynor's magical change of face, I liked it - deep, balanced and varied, very well presented, some new mechanics with the upgrades/mercs, etc. and had a bunch of great cutscenes. I have no issues whatsoever with SC2 winning PC GOTY.

L0s3rx
L0s3rx

@madmenno Yes, it has a campaign. I understand the point you're trying to make, but a game is only deserving of a GotY award if it is truly outstanding in ALL aspects, not just a singularly good multiplayer. @lordlastday Maybe you can stand to do something repetitive, but I really can't. There's nothing interesting about the campaign.

madmenno
madmenno

@L0s3rx Damn does SC2 have a campeign... amazing this game does deserve even more credit as the MP alone is worth buying it for double the price. Anyway, it wasn't about best single player game. SC has done a great job on keeping the feeling of SC1 and renewing many concepts of RTS. Big thumbs up for blizzard.

no suprise which game that won

This game has no business being the victor - the 17 hour campaign was utterly ridiculous and wasn't even worth a second playthrough. The story took a turn for the worse. The only reason this game is worth playing is for the competitive multiplayer and the custom maps (which Blizzard only supplied the tools to create). This game is not worthy for THE best PC game of the year, in this reader's opinion. The best multiplayer? Sure, I believe it deserves that. The best game of the year is the best in ALL ASPECTS, not just one, people. Team Liquid screwed this competition over, like they always do. The other games didn't even stand a chance because of a well-embedded fan base that has had 12 years to develop. Wow. That's totally a fair comp. NOT.

Strategy will always rule on the PC. FPS and RP games are now console ports where they use to be usually PC exclusive. But I believe if someone would make a PC exclusive FPS or RP game for the PC only it would be awesome simply caus you can do so much more on the PC not counting the graphics engine, huge maps, detailed user interface, etc..

Agreed, StarCraft 2 well deserved it!

Serve them right! Multiplatform games should not even be elligible! Since PC is just an afterthought for those games!

I was fairly certain that "SC II" would take the honours, but I'm not convinced it should have. Having played it now for quite a while I still get the feeling of "been there, done that". So many original IP's missing from the list. Still, kudos to Blizzard.

Having Starcraft 2 just below the video in the left column kind of renders the whole presentation useless...
