Genre Awards

The 2009 awards break down the top games of the year into categories based on genre. As games grow increasingly diverse and inventive and incorporate multiple facets of various genres, it becomes harder and harder to assign them to a single category, but we've done so here to the best of our ability. Therefore, our awards represent the best game in the genre, and not the game that best represents the genre it's categorized as.

I'm not sure why people are saying Demon's Souls isn't an RPG. It's a game that let's you play your role as an adventurer literally however you want and still be successful in a well realised and dark world. Want to play as a pure mage? Go for it. Want to dual-wield shields and wear heavy armour? No problem. Want to run around naked in only a hat and smash things with a giant axe? That works too. Each of these approaches are both viable and rewarding. It even has a good and evil system for both the worlds and the character tied to your in game actions as opposed to dialogue choices (though world tendency could use some work). It also has a unique and exceedingly well implemented online component that is truly unique. I can see why it has scored so highly and gained to much attention from the gaming press. It's refreshing and mirrors very little released in recent years, unlike most other nominees.

Demon Souls isn't an RPG. It's not even an"RPG-lite" like Mass Effect.
Demon Souls (my favourite game of 2009 btw) couldn't see the outline of the word"RPG" if it wore a pair of binoculars with a telescope attached to each end.
It's an ac/ad. If categories can be as messed up as this there's little point having them at all

i agree that killzone 2 deserves the award because its ground breaking in terms of shooters while CODMW2 was good but would've won the award if they added 6 more hours of playability into the campaign. Demon Souls won! hands down its amazing!!!! Sims 3 isn't a strategy!!

awesome how a lot of these games are in my library, i have good taste i guess, and plan on getting a few of the others in the future... i like how people who have not played these games can say they dont deserve the award because not knowing makes much more sense than actually knowing.

When a non RPG (Demon Souls) can beat a real RPG (Dragon Age) I know the gaming media have finally deserted gamers.

I can understand them trying to pick games that you may not have expected very much, but... Killzone 2, Demon's Souls and The Sims 3...? REALLY?! >_>... That just seems way off, I thought the results until Killzone 2 seemed pretty accurate, but... Yeah, after Killzone 2 everything except Fifa seemed a bit off.

dragon age was robbed. also, i'm not sure why a game that can be played most of the way using just a knife should win best fps.

I agree with the fps award only because MW2's campaign was waaaay too short, they are just relying too mutch on multiplayer these days, as for the RPG, thats just plain Bull**** i,ve barely heard of deamon's souls before and after launch while DA:O has been a huge success ever since the beggining of the year Ive already played the entire storyline 3 times and im getting ready for the third.
Gamespot, i'm sorry but your opinion nowadays is worth sh***.

While I had a couple of minor disagreements (I think Dragon Age should've got the best RPG) I can totally see the reasoning behind all of these.
