GameSpot's genre awards are often the most difficult to determine because they encompass all games that fit into a certain genre, across all platforms. Note that GameSpot's method of determining finalists and winners is not to give the award to the game that best represented the genre it belongs to, but rather, to the best game in that genre. We do this to encourage game developers to ultimately create good games; after all, awards for individual game features are covered in Special Achievements. Like with most other categories, genre awards are limited to a maximum of five finalists, so simply being nominated is an honor unto itself.
