Platform Awards

2009 has seen multiple game releases on multiple platforms, so there has been no shortage of great games for everyone to enjoy regardless of which platform they own. GameSpot's platform awards honor those games that stand out on the platform regardless of their exclusivity to that platform. Provided it's identical across platforms, a great game is a great game. Still, the few console-exclusives we had this year made for some interesting debates when met with competition from excellent multiplatform games.

    @Adziboy, you make a very good point sir and I respect your opinion (how often does that happen on the internet )

    @stephenage:

    Hmm, yes, but I think there's different takes on the term GOTY. I see it as purely 'the best game', with the best thought out game mechanics, greatest art design, replayability etc etc and I think it has everything Uncharted 2 has and more (in terms of everything 'cept Story) and that a majority of PS3 players are too scared to pick up Demons Souls incase it isn't for them.

    But I can see the case for what the majority of fans think, but that's for the Readers Choice winners, amirite? In the end, it's opinion of Gamespot, ad not necesarily everyone that works there, just the majority.

    I would say that either uncharted 2 or killzone 2 should have won for the PS3.

    Good results al round IMO
    Ive built a high end PC and have a ps3 and just sold my LAST! xbox 360 amn have played almost every game on one platform or anoughter and dragon age has given me weeks of top quality gaming and i still have yet to finish it really deserved the win here.
    and im very glad to see MW2 win nothing as its so overhyped its its not even funny and there are much better multiplayer games out there with so much more innovation and creativity like killzone 2, plus as its now owned by greed crop EG: activision GET READY FOR IT TO BE MILKED IN THE SAME WAY AS GUITAR HERO IP.After all MW2 was basically a cod 4 skin job andfrom what ive read a hackers paradise.

    I will deffo have to give deamon souls a look as i intended to pickup uncharted 2 anyway just cant understand why left 4 dead needs to be an 360 exclusive there missing out on so much $

    Not bad choices, although I would have to disagree with Assasins Creed 2.

    i find it moderately amusing that assassin's creed won the 360 award when it wasn't even the best version out there; the PS3 one had integration with PSP's Bloodlines and it didn't even make the cut for nomination. heck, even the likes of killzone 2 and uncharted 2 didn't manage to clinch the award in the PS3 category. goes to show how awesome the lineup for sony's console is this year.

    @Adziboy you raise a good point, however isn't the reason of the game of the year awards to represent the best games on the consoles and wouldn't the best game be the best game for everyone? That's how I see it anyway

    @Overminty, the other way round, a game that got a 9.0 in 2008 for example would not be as good as a game that got a 9.0 in 2009. Standards change, that is why it doesn't make sense that Demon's Souls lost out to a game that scored higher than it than came out later

    @stephenage

    So, a game can get better over time but not worse?

    Another person for me to explain the rating system to.

    Imagine if the rating system was done on how *good* the game was? Everything would have to be rated 0.1 because nobody knows what sort of games the future will bring us.

    Instead, it uses a recomendation system. A score of 10 means it's a must buy, for MOST people. Everything is self explanatory from there.

    A game like Uncharted is suited for everyone. Not too hard gameplay, fairly skilled yet casual multiplayer and a co-op experience. Demons Souls is an RPG, which is extremely hard, and is not for everyone, yet is better in the eyes of Gamespot. As a reviewing site, and a site which many people do, but shouldn't, go to to find out what games to buy without their own research, Gamespots doing them a favour by rating Uncharted 2, which they will like more, and Demons Souls less so they research and make sure it's for them.

    Demon's Souls!!!!!!! WTF Uncharted 2 should've have won that by a mile

    oh and the reason why there is no mw2 nominated in ps3 catergory is simply because there are already so many great exclusives taking up the space.

    besides mw2 is soo overhyped, which is clearly proven as killzone 2 won both best shooter and competitive multiplayer

    i find it funny how the best game on 360 was on multiplatforms and the best ps3 game was a ps3 exclusive, shows the playstation has upped their game in creating awesome releases

    I played DA: O on 360, but loved it so much I'm upgrading my PC to play it in its best possible form, really glad it won

    So Demon's Souls with the 9.0 beat the 9.5 Uncharted 2. I recognise that over time a 9.0 game can be better than a 9.5 but Uncharted 2 came out after Demon's Souls. I do not get the logic here
