Best Competitive Multiplayer

These days it seems the question "Does it have multiplayer?" accompanies almost every new game release. Our desire to play games with our friends is strong, but our desire to destroy them utterly and revel in sweet victory burns even stronger. This year offered a dazzling variety of ways to defeat other players, from the grand strategic thrusts into enemy-occupied territory to a good old-fashioned axe blow to the head. The games that gave us the most devious, the most engaging, and the most satisfying ways to engage others in competition earned their spots as nominees in this highly contested category.

i happen to love kz2 and its amazing multiplayer, but its pretty hard to party up with friends and thats my only criticism. mw2 just edges it for me, its addictive on a whole new level and joining friends in battle from the xmb is great and also great is the host migration mid game instead of the game ending. i love mw2 and it deserved some kudos in this category imo.

@Doomsky: It's more fast paced action than compared to the first one where you would do what most RTS do and build up your base while attacking enemies. The second one probably allows for more competitivness (as stated as the award).

If Dawn of War 1 came out this year I would of happily voted for that but Dawn of War 2's scrambling around to capture each others points? No thanks the fact that you can't lockdown or fortify any part of the map is silly to me, Company of Heroes had front lines and supply lines to keep combat centralized, DOW2 was a step back from COH in my opnion.

I love the MP on Killzone 2. I own MW2 and I think the reward system is good fun but for actual battles KZ2 is so intense. I have played it a lot and am still trying to earn my badges. I love the way it is more strategic than just gunning down as many foes as you can. Yes you raise rank that way but trying to achieve 20 points without killing a teammate is a real challenge considering the ferocity of the firefights.

    Killzone 2? Really? Wow.

MW2 was the obvious winner here, though for me I;'d have opted for Dawn of War 2, because its by far the most intense strategy I've ever played.

killzone 2 are you kidding me. I own killzone 2, Gears 2, MW2 and have prob racked up over 10x the hours on MW2, the killzone mp realy aint that gr8 and thats coming from sum1 who likes the game.

MW2's gameplay is frustrating and the ultra-weapons you get for kill streaks are pretty ridiculous. It's entirely fair for me to run out of this building, and oh my gosh, I should have known there would be a helicopter gunship there to shoot me in the face. How silly of me.
And seriously? A tactical nuke? I swear when designing the kill streak rewards and writing the story, Infinity Ward must've been smoking something funny :p

Awww yeah! Oh yes I am so so pleased with this! Although I readily admit my personal bias towards Killzone 2, I think it's right that that Gamespot chose to award this to the most innovative of the nominees. The learning curve of this game makes the competitive multiplayer an addictive and satisfying time-waster.

KZ2 is better online than MW2 on the PS3, it's less laggy and MUCH deeper

What is the point of voting seriously? 56% vs. 13%?

Killzone 2 definetly deserved to win. Unlike MW2, K2 actually delivered on it's immense hype.

Wow. GS are brave to choose that over MW2, I don't disagree though

I'm not into shooters, so I'll have to go with Fat Princess. The game was lots of fun, even though not for a long time.

Wow, CoD didn't win this? Nice GS, you've got guts (I agree, but that is because I don't really dig the whole insta-kill incredibly frustrating gameplay)
