Special Achievement

Best Original Game Mechanic

If you think that games aren't innovative anymore, you just haven't been paying attention. Every year, games are released to store shelves that either introduce brand-new features or take familiar ones and turn them on their heads. In 2009, the most original games combined multiple genres into a single enjoyable package, showered you with rewards even when you were floundering, and even turned death into a useful learning tool. Each nominee for Best Original Game Mechanic touted an important mechanic that was both novel and imaginative--and each game was the better for it.

Our nominees include Demon's Souls integrated help, Half-Minute Hero's 30-second RPG gameplay, the ability to write nearly anything in Scribblenauts, the hybrid puzzle-platforming of Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, and the Copycat perk from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

I've never touched a DS but even I know Scribblenauts deserves to win this award.

MW2? Again , a huge WTF. Scribblenauts or Demon's Souls, even though that isn't out here... yet

Damn! I just can't choose between Demon's Souls, Scribblenauts and Knights in the Nightmare.. I wish I could just divide my vote.

Scribblenauts - being able to write anything and it happening - very good idea, and makes you wonder why it wasn't done before.

As for MW2 death streak - kinda rubbing your nose in how crap you're doing

I have to agree with everyone who has commented on the Cod voting option, Copycat isn't really that original in my opinion... Stealing other peoples attacks? Wasn't Kirby doing that years before?

Scribblenauts gets boring but still a great concept, though.

So people just like voting MW2 for anything then. The Copycat doesn't really deserve to be on this list. The idea of a 30-second RPG game gets me every time though.

Original game mechanic and CoD has votes for copycat perk?? Is it just me or is it being voted for quite simply because it's CoD??

Scribblenauts should get this one, hopefully. That Write Anything thing is pretty impressive, even if the game gets a bit boring.
