Hello, everyone. So I decided to try this game out for the free weekend, and I'm really digging it. After playing around as a knight and a vanguard, it seemed I did better as the latter, so I decided to stick with it and unlock his weapons.
That said, I'd like to learn how to improve my game and fulfill my role on a team more efficiently. What I like to do now is ready my charge attack, pick an open target and engage him, then I finish him off and run away until my charge attack is ready again. I have a lot of trouble actually landing my charge attacks though, I just can't seem to measure the distance properly most of the time.
So, any advice would be much appreciated.

Believe it or not, the charge attack isn't the Vanguard's most prominent strongpoint.
It has a huge range, so landing it shouldn't be a problem. Just practice with it.
The problem comes from people who parry/block it. Don't think of that as a wasted attack, because it staggers them. Immediately follow up with a thrust.
I'm also assuming you're using spears/polearms. I don't have experience with greatswords, but thrusting is usually quick and deadly. If they aren't prepared for a second block/parry, you'll hit them.
Don't forget to kick turtlers! If someone is hiding behind parry/shield for all of your attacks, they have a pretty basic rotation going on.
You attack -> They block.
They attack -> You block.
It goes back and forth forever. You have to be the one to end that rotation. Either feint one of your attacks so they parry too soon, then poke them. Or if they're using a shield, kick them when they expect you to attack again.
That usually gives you an opening to get a quick hit.
Also, don't forget your secondaries. They're really powerful, and faster than primaries. It throws people off when you use something so quick.
Edit addendum: Also, I'm pretty sure the Halberd is a vanguard only weapon. . . it's OP from what's being said on forums. Try to unlock it and try it out

Thank you for your response. I've been using Vanguard for a lot of games now, but most of the time, my charge attacks either fall short, or overshoot and make me fly past my target, putting me in a bad position. I guess I just need to keep practicing that, though.
How can I tell when it's better to use a secondary over a primary? Switching weapons takes some time, so I need to be able to tell when the time is right to switch before engaging.

Vanguard weapons are superior to the Knights in my opinion. The Zweihander in particular has a very long reach and should easily overcome most other two-handed swords if used correctly.
The spear class weapons are exclusive to the Vanguard and one of the most powerful weapons in the game if used right. If you can keep a fair distance between you and the enemy, you can just keep poking them with the thrust and vertical attack buttons. The third spear will kill a Knight in just 2-3 strikes.
They also have a charge attack which is extremely powerful even when blocked. You won't be able to position yourself during the attack and slightly after so be careful when you use it. A block opponent will be stunned and pushed back briefly so you can follow up another attack right after.
I see the Vanguard as a good balance but more in favor of offense. They're only effective if you play offensively and don't let up with your attacks.

Depending on the weapon, I find it better to
not use the charge attack. For a spear or halberd weapon, using an overhead is usually much better and more accurate. I'd charge an archer, perhaps, but for anyone else I'd rather not be left vulnerable if I miss. Plus, the charge attack can be blocked, so it's not advantageous to use such a heavy attack unless your target isn't looking or moving.
Swords have better charge attacks to do the large arc.
The vanguard's strength is range. Always be wary of footwork and distance and maintain your offense so that enemy MAA's don't get into range. It only takes 2-3 hits with most of their weapons to take out an MAA or Vanguard. If you are forced to duel an enemy with a single-handed weapon, it might be better to switch to your secondary. The faster weapon is usually what dictates the flow of an engagement. A good player can still win with a long weapon, but if you're not confident just make the switch. Back off when doing so -- there should always be a good time to switch.
A vanguard stands out in team fights. Due to the range of their weapons, they can be effective thrusting between bodies and swings. This is their unique "ability" -- knights and MAA's can't swing without getting in the way, whereas your long weapons have deceptively long reach and can easily finish off a weakened opponent in one hit. Getting those pick-offs is crucial to turning a battle around for your team.

I like vanguard, but I would do better if I didn't have this glitch where half of the time the charging attack becomes a normal attack, and then the following attack (while stationary) becomes a charging attack. Of course both will miss...
