GIve me a heads up?

So I just finished playing Chrono Trigger on my DS. I've finished it multiple times before, but this is the first for the DS version. Anyway, I figured I'd give this a whirl and wondered if I should go in with some pre-existing knowledge? I've played this game before, but only very briefly and I didn't get too far, so I am aware at the depth of the game including the unique combat as well as the large amount of characters to recruit. I know not all of them are obtainable in a single playthrough, so I figured I'd just not worry about it too much and see who I can recruit along the way in my own time. Let's just say that I'd like to have story as a preference above total completion. I know that recruiting certain characters means you can't recruit others and things like that, however is there some things I should flat out not do?
