After reaching The End of Time area for the first time, I noticed a glowing sphere that the old man didn't mention it's purpose. After getting my magic abilities, I tried to see what's the deal with it, and the old man started explaining how this time rift will take me to the day of Lavos, where Lavos destroyed the world, and if I went there I will meet a similar fate.

I got intrigued by the prospect of meeting the big bad himself this early in the game, so I jumped in to the year 1999. I got the choice to escape but I decided to fight him anyway. At first he was pretty easy, but after defeating him he went into a new form with a flashing image of the second boss appearing on the screen. That's when I noticed that in each phase he was mimicking a previous boss that I battled. I went through 4 forms before I decided to reload the game.

Now my question is, is it possible to defeat him this early in the game ? When I eventually fight Lavos, will he still fight by mimicking old bosses ? Finally, will defeating him during different parts of the story have any impact on the ending ?

These "attack mode" fights are, as you noticed, mimicries of select bosses throughout the game (nine total, including several you haven't yet met). AFTER them, the boss fight REALLY begins, and is also multi-stage, but far more interesting than a boss rehash.

It will probably also murder you with extreme prejudice. However, there is a unique ending for losing the game to Lavos - a full-on "Bad Ending" instead of a simple game over screen. Worth seeing once on principle, if you ask me.

It is NOT, however, invincible, even at this stage before you should even think about fighting it. Powergrinding to endgame levels - or using some sort of cheat device to manipulate your stats - will allow you a victory. (Sorry, but at the expected levels for your current stage in the game, NO amount of luck will allow a legitimate victory - he has attacks that will, simply put, overwhelm you. Some of them are team-wide one-shotters.

In this game's "New Game Plus" feature, it is very possible to finish the boss at any point, and depending on the phase of game progress, there are ten "bonus endings". Perhaps, if you won here, you would see the applicable NG+ ending. I don't know, though.

But still. If you want to give it a whirl just to see the Bad Ending, go for it. It's the first game I saw to make a special ending for losing to the main boss.

Even at end game levels as in Power level to above 60 and you still won't win the fight and not because of the damage its because of a lack of items to restore the PC's MP when they don't have any left.

^ Yeah I've already figured that out XD

I've been really enjoying the game so far. The battles can get a little bit cheap sometimes, but they're easy most of the time.

The boss fight against Masamune really ticked me off, mostly duo to there wind attack. How am I supposed to figure out that I was supposed to use Crono's Wind Slash to stop the attack ? Once I found out about that, the fight become easy.

A really good game, and I defiantly can see the reason behind all the praise it gets. The opening itself screamed "Timeless" to me. I felt so much nostalgia even though this is my first time playing the game.

An old guy (in a tabern or inn in a town and time I forgot) tells you about "balance in nature" and using wind slash to cancel whirlwinds.

Or owning the PS1/SNES players guuide which mentions that however while the 10 mode change versions of Lavos may be possible to kill off IF at level 60 odds are you will lose the fight at this point do to lack of good MP restore items and ethers aren't good enough.

Talking to towns people really helps in this game. One of the few games I enjoy talking to everyone. Classic script.
