How a series long dominated by alien-killing machismo flashes a slightly different side.
For a series that lets you throw people by their necks and knock steel doors off their hinges with your bare hands, there's something oddly vulnerable about Crysis 3. Sure, in many ways this is the same sci-fi first-person shooter you've seen in previous installments--right on down to the part where you pick up enemies by their necks and throw them from cliffs, buildings, or buildings sitting atop tall cliffs. But there's this other side of Crysis 3 that hasn't been explored in previous games, a side where all that machismo recedes for a moment or two and you get to look at the game's setting and central characters in an altogether different light.
Remember Psycho? He of the cockney accent and with a penchant for British vulgarities? Psycho was one of the nanosuited supersoldiers from the original Crysis, and he went on to star in the series' lone expansion, Crysis Warhead. Psycho returns as a player companion in Crysis 3, but he's a different man now.
No longer equipped with a nanosuit, Psycho now belongs to a sort of underground resistance network fighting the CELL private security forces responsible for erecting a massive dome around New York City after the events of the last game. Decked out in plainclothes and looking a little pudgy, Psycho comes off a bit timid and shell-shocked after what has happened in the past. He feels like a veteran battling post-traumatic stress disorder, only he never got to come home from his war. He's still fighting it.
In one memorable scene, Psycho and Prophet (Crysis 3's main character) approach a gate leading up to an elevated subway line. Psycho attempts to knock down the door, but just winds up hurting himself and falling to the ground. It's then up to you, the player, to finish the job as Psycho looks on in what can only be described as abject embarrassment.
That sense of vulnerability is reflected in the environment, as well. New York has long been portrayed as the type of city that is able to overcome any tragedy or disaster that comes its way, a place where people are simply too proud and stubborn to see their home devolve into anything less than one of the greatest cities in the world.
In Crysis 3, though, there's a certain loss of identity that's hard to ignore in those moments you're allowed to take a look around you outside of combat. After aliens invaded New York in Crysis 2 and effectively demolished the city, Manhattan is now covered in a giant dome designed to quarantine the lingering threat. The result is a city that has returned to nature, with dense foliage and greenery overtaking the buildings and concrete.
You see a bit of New York in those glimpses at its iconic skyline, but often you're so surrounded by jungle that it's hard to tell you're in the city at all. Are you on 7th or 5th Avenue? Is this Central Park or some new jungle? So much of the city's defining characteristics have been smoothed over by destruction and overgrowth that it becomes that much harder to pinpoint where you are. It feels like a different New York, one that wasn't--for once in history--able to rebuild itself.
Will Crysis 3 take all of this and turn it into a first-person shooter that's a little less aggressive and a little more contemplative? Who knows. It might very well become the same sort of alien invasion story we've seen twice before. But for a few moments here and there, Crysis 3 does let you look at its characters and settings in a somewhat different light. For a series three games and one expansion deep, that change of pace--however fleeting--is nice to see.

Crysis is awsome. i felt after playing crysis 2 that what was written wasnt as good as holding this in your hand, taking it easy with games pays off into a playable movie where you barely die. the fuckin kitties blessed this name it was soo fun i playedit too late. crysis 3 seems promisingly intense, theirs nothing like badass wipping out from corners. i hope game makers are proud of their accomplishments

No, it's going to be another linear, setpiece filled shooter.
hmmmm, will this be another installment 3 disappointment! Crysis was awesome, Crysis 2 was good. 3rd installments tend to be a little too repetative in my view (GoW, CoD, etc etc etc, all good, but too much was lost or simply repetative as the series went on)...hope the developers can bring back the awesomeness of the original...
If I'm correct the protagonist of crysis 3 should be Alcatraz who is being called prophet because no one besides ghould knows who he actually is. Last I heard of prophet he had a 1 1/2 inch piece of metal in his brain, I don't think he's coming back from that. If he makes a miraculous recovery, then no spoilers please. I still have yet to beat #2 :P
Crysis is without a doubt the most engaging FPS out there for many reasons. Excellent graphics, excellent story, excellent characters, dozens of missions, spectacular nanosuit, fantastic settings, cool aliens, intelligent enemies, creative animations, excellent shooting engine, great guns (though this part could be greatly improved), et cetera. I always considered COD games to be the best FPSs, but since I started playing Crysis long ago, I quickly realized the truth, Crysis gives a hell of a fight to its competitors.
Crysis started well, being basically Far Cry but with a nano suit, and then went to sh*t when all the alien stuff happened and it just became a mindless shooter in which your suit enhancements were pretty much useless. For this reason i didnt even bother trying Crysis 2 since from what i read it was again more halo type gameplay, blasting loads of rockets into enemies and such. Basically removing all the good bits of the first crysis and just keeping the bad. I have no interest in that kind of shooter. Unless they bring it back to fighting mainly human enemies with a stealth element and all, i won't bother. Now that ubisoft figured out what to do with the franchise with Far Cry 3, i can't complain too much, but i still wish Crytek had never lost the Far cry franchise. The first one is still better than any Crysis game.
I agree completely.. what i hate the most about crysis 2 is that they turned great game into another onrail shooter... It started already in crysis. But in crysis i had fun at least in the first missions...Like you said - when the aliens appeared all went to shit.. I can't forget how great levels were in original FarCry - open world, you can go wherever you want - i.e. Archives and Island levels...
One question that has been nagging at me for a while.
What on average would such a game like Crysis 3 and other top notch titles cost to create from start to finish?
I know there is a mass collaboration of professions sometimes up to 200 personnel to manufacture such a product.
What would your educated estimate be?
They definitely need to step it up when it comes to Multiplayer. I really enjoyed Crysis 2, could care less about the story because YES it was a bit confusing trying to figure it al out. The Miltiplayer was fun and fast paced but it was definitely a bit broken and I encountered quite a few glitches throughout. For example, when I pre-ordered, the weapon skin it came with, never appeared on any of my weapons no matter how many times I tried selecting it or equipping it. Hit detection was almost a joke on numerous occasions and overall it didn't feel fluid and smooth like Crysis on PC. You got a real diamond on your hands now EA, let it shine!
What made Crysis 1 great was the excitement of the unknown. It was one of the best experiences i've had in a long time. The story just kept me hooked. Remember? The Aliens supposedly were hibernating on the planet before humans were civilized. During their awakening they sent out a communication to some system in the galaxy. They had a huge ice shield that absorbed energy, even a nuclear bomb.
I'll never understand how game makers push all the fans out of the way and ruin the story. As far as i'm concerned Prophet, Pyscho, Nomad and the Scientist chick are still on the Island fighting back somehow LOL....
I still can't get over how shitty the story of Crysis 2 was. I mean, A TALKING SUIT??? CALLING ME SOLDIER AND "MOTIVATING" ME??? WHAT IS THIS?? CALL OF DUTY??

@chechak7 Prophet's conscience lives inside the AI of the nanosuit, Alcatraz provided a physical body for him to keep on going. Now we have the nanosuit itself, Prophet's brain and Alcatraz' body.
@chechak7 remember that last part of Crysis 2 where Nomad decided to call himself Prophet? Yeah I'd prefer it if it was just Nomad following Prophet's legacy, instead of taking on his identity altogether
Where I can see the shift and understand the ramifications, I really wouldn't see it as anything other than complacency with heuristics that prompts discomfort with this change...I mean, if said citizens were so proud and plucky, why didn't they just tear down the dome or whatever and move on...? I can see how it could work this way, of course I won't ever play the game because of it's needless content and resulting rating. Therefore I can posit this view without bias.

@tgwolf agreed about the needless content--I tried the crysis 2 multiplayer demo, and it was just ridiculous, the computer swearing at you when you die? Why would a game designer ever put that in, you already have to deal with idiots online.
crysis 2 engine is smooth as hell compared to number 1
linear storyline = good storyline
get rid of stealth in mulitplayer... thats my only complaint
give cod and bf a run for their money, do a proper mulitplayer not an after thought multiplayer
and yes a better storyline would help though, with more urban areas than just jungle all the time.
@Welshmun The only reason Crysis 2 is so "smooth" is because it has way less to process in a scene. And Jungle is what made the first game so god damn interesting, take that out and you have every other game in existence.
When I played the first Crysis, I can drive any vehicle I want wherever and whenever, in the land, in the sea, even in the air, on single player mode. but Crysis 2 only give me to play with walking around and shoot some aliens. At least, I hope in Crysis 3, they can make prophet jumping around from the trees like a predator. But until now no video game play footage like that . . .
I like the city setting, just hope they've upped the quality back to Crysis 1 level instead of dumbing it down and have reinstate the openworld theme cos I really liked that about the original, just being able to get to where you're going however you choose was better than being forced to go one way only
The footage I've seen looks too much like the previous one, specially the multiplayer. It was a nice game but didn't make enough noise.

@blastmaster2k2 But the second wasn't open world and thats one of the things that made it so bad. I hope the whole dome is explorable in this entry.
My main enjoyment from Crysis 1 was the illusion of a sandbox world. I could infiltrate by sea, climb through the mountains, or drive in a jeep guns blazing.
One my most memorable moments was sneaking up on a north korean soldier inside a metal hut and grabbing him by the neck. I figured in order to ensure that he died I would activate strength mode. Yet, when I threw him up against the wall, the wall collapsed and brought the whole hut down with it.
When the smoke cleared, the Korean soldiers saw me standing there and opened fire.
There was nothing even close to being that awesome in Crysis 2.

I never understood why they never carried on with the original Crysis Story and character. Crysis 2 was so generic in comparison to the much better original, and now this? :( I'd like for this to be good but I won't order it until all the reviews are out.
I think they should have taken a page out of Ubisoft's book and gone back to the jungle for number 3. The urban settings seem too crowded as far as player path choices. Crysis games are getting more and more linear with each one that comes out it seems. I didn't care too much for the robotic "aliens" from the first couple of games either, so seeing some more humaniod aliens in the 2nd game was a nice change. Still, I feel like the story and gameplay has changed to the point where it doesn't feel like Crysis to me anymore. I mean, they try to tell you where to go for stealth, sniping, and whatever else in Crysis 2 when you reach a new area. Isn't the power of the suit enough to enable the player to decide where to go and what to do? I guess not. It is almost like these developers make M rated games easy enough for a 10 year old to play on purpose. **Sigh** There is no more faith given to the player anymore with all of the hand holding in games recently. Truthfully, the story isn't nearly as important to me as the gameplay in this type of game. Sure, I like a game that has both, but if I have to choose between good story and good gameplay, the gameplay will win every time.
@ZOD777 it's still the urban setting because most of the buildings still seem to provide a closed setting for the action. the plants are just there for eye candy and the piddly amount of sneaking that you can try but will ultimately abandon for shooting guys in the face. open world is over.
They've got a lot to answer for after crysis 2.
In particular, alien enemies in C2 are among the worst gaming enemies i've ever faced. Rediculous looking, lolloping, stupid monstrosities but also, without personality. Many sci-fi films/games don't give you much back-story to their "monsters" but those that create atmosphere with design/lore/thrills often don't have to. Crysis 2 was devoid of any atmosphere pretty much throughout so yeah, they'd better inject a heavy dose of soul into this otherwise i'll be avoiding "polished turd 3."
@broost1 Crysis never had a soul. I don't get why people are tripping about these games. The first one was created just to showcase new graphics and people aknowledge that and didn't expect much else from the game. Now people talk about Crysis like it was the greatest piece of evolution of humanity!!
@Dnaisinmybody No, quite right but i meant the developers need to inject some of their soul in order to create a bit of atmosphere, if you get me? Vague i know, but like with anything, you can tell when somethings made with a bit of "love"!
