If you use a Ps3 or 360 controller this game essentially becomes the console version with new additional content that is extremely fun to play.

I think it is deserving of a 9/10 easily.  Most of the user ratings are low due to the poor porting that was done, and complete inability to play the game with mouse and keyboard.

Could it be possible that the gaming community thought that it only deserved a 7?

I would have given it less then that.

It seems that this game reeks of the "Emporers New Clothes".

Just because the critics think its cool to say so called 'difficult' games (I would characterise DS as frustrating) deserve a high score because other recent games have become too easy doesn't warrant in itself a high score for any game.

And that is what we have here.

    Longshanks - "Archers"

English Commander - "I beg your pardon sire. won't we hit our own troops?"

Longshanks - "Yes but we'll hit theirs aswell. We have reserves. Attack"

Could it be possible that the gaming community thought that it only deserved a 7?

And what we have here is a blatant case of someone not understanding Dark Souls, probably because he played for an hour and rage quit.

As for the big difference between user and GS review - it's probably because some people are giving it an extremely low score because they're unhappy with the way it was ported. I myself gave it a 10. I've played all three versions of Dark Souls, totalling hundreds of hours, and I'm still not the slightest bit bored of it. I truly consider it to be one of the best games ever made.

because regardless of all the mistakes done while porting the game , its fun, addicting and a very food gucking game! (after you get used to the gameplay, wich takes a few hours)

"bblaaah graaaawr, 720p crappy poooort" <- there's a Fix that already adds a lot of PC config stuff.

"blwuarrraaagghhh , i need to download stuff to make it work" <- Be happy that the Fix/mod works without problems and it's not banned in Xbox Live. I bet you that people would be a lot more angry if it didn't have a fix/mod support.

"blrrrwaaaaaurrgh nooo, it sucks with KB & Mouse" <- it's a console port, some people like to play without controller and there are lots of cheap controls, if you have a console even the PS3 controller works with Motioninjoy without problems.

    END

PD: it really deserves that 9.5, i'm having a lot of fun and it looks great at 1080p.
    I think you're wrong

this game deserves this hands down. reason it has a 7 ia cause of all of the 1 that sheeps who cant:
    - handle a controller
    - afford a controller
    - extract a 5kb mod
gave in reviews then whine about the game being **** when its a masterpiece that looks beautiful on my 42'' screen that I get to enjoy in the sofa with a controller. Any PC gamer should have a controller so many games are designed to be played with that.

Wrong, CONSOLE games are designed to be played with a gamepad. PC games as a general rule are not. Know which ones are typically in need of a pad? Ports. Yes yes, I get it, this is a console port. Guess what, don't care. Didn't buy the console version for a reason (several, actually). I'm a PC gamer, and as such I expect my controls to be tailored to that. Furthermore, as a PC gamer, I expect my graphics to reflect what my system is capable of, which is far and above what a 7 year old console can do. There shouldn't have to be a mod community fix because the developer should have done it in the first place. Maybe this game has merit, wouldn't know, was far too disgusted with the drawbacks to waste my time on it more than I did. Do not excuse the developer from second or third rate work. They screwed the pooch on this one and don't deserve a community sticking up for them just because the console version was so well done.

Boo **** hoo. This is exactly what I'd expect from an overly entitled example of the "PC gaming master race". There's so much wrong with your paragraph that I'm honestly going to have a difficult time picking it into bits, but here goes.

You don't deserve better graphics and texture resolution simply because PCs can handle it. You can get exactly what everyone else gets, which frankly, should be enough. Stop acting like the developers should pander to you when the developers took six months of time that could have been spent making another best selling game TO pander to people's requests.

And PC games as a general rule not being designed for a game pad is **** 90% of platformers, fighters/brawlers/slashers, and some top-down shooters and RPGs are designed with gamepads in mind, and made specifically for PC. You know why? Because controls aren't fit for platform, they're fit for genre. An arcade stick will always be best for 2D fighting games. A gamepad will always be best for spectacle fighters. A joystick will always be best for flight sims. And a keyboard and mouse will always be best for FPS and RTS.

And the community's sticking up for them because the community is the reason this happened. From Soft said from the start that they had no idea how to make a PC game, they warned us. We asked for them to do it anyways because we wanted Souls on the PC, and we figured that even if this didn't pan out exactly as we wanted it to, modders could fix it up to a playable state. Plus, From Soft needed some experience on the PC if any of their later games are to be both on the PC, and decent.

Also, you passed on a game due to graphics? Didn't people just get OFF the graphics wave? And I mean, even the people on that wave were primarily console gamers. PC gamers should be used to games with crap graphics, because some of the best PC games that exist are a decade or more old.

But fine, remain set in your ignorant ways. Not like there aren't enough morons on the Internet.

Spoken like a true console puppy. Hey, I'm happy for you that you are well pleased with the best that your console can provide for you. Consoles are cute, and I'm glad to see that they make you smile. I have a system that is capable of far more, however, and as such I have a higher sense of expectation. So NO, what they put out here IS NOT enough and I will NOT settle for second rate decade old visuals simply because that adorable little console just cant keep up. Absolutely I expect the developer to pander to me, seeing as how they expect me to GIVE THEM MY MONEY for their product. If this were a FTP, port or no, then I would keep my mouth shut and be happy that I get to partake in what all the gamepad jockeys were clambering about. But they want my money, and I want a product that is worth what they are asking. They FAILED. Miserably. They didn't say, "hey, we aren't PC programmers but we'll give it our best shot and if you don't like it you can have your money back". So I will do my damnedest to make sure no one else gets taken for a ride and ripped off. You drink your koolaid and enjoy a second-rate product. I'm going to hold them to a higher level of product and keep my expectations up so I get what my hard earned money is worth.

I approached the previous title (Demon Souls) with caution because I thought it was based on a gimmik. But I fell in love with it. Dark Souls, the spiritual successor, although has some downsides compared to the previous game, it is overall a better game.

You have to remember one thing about this game - it doesn't give you and hand outs.

I've been playing RPGs (my favorite genre next to Fighting and occassionally FPS) for 17+ years now and I thought Dark Souls had one of the most interesting and deep combat and gear systems. There are ton of gears to mix and match and tons more to upgrade.

But you have to really dig to start discovering it all.

PvP is INTENSE and has a lot of depth to experiment with. You can beat someone 40+ level than you if you are more skilled player than he is. There are tons of builds to try out.

STORY is much better this time around than Demon Souls although like its predecessor, the story isn't fed to you. You have to explore and discover it. At first I didn't appreciate that aspect very much, but more and more I got into it more and more I appreciated it. You earn pieces of the story line with the decisions you make and your view of the events of game can change depending on what you do (most obvious and famous being the priest in the beginning of the game).

Furthermore, STORY is dark and unforgiving. There's no real "good" or "evil" (except perhaps the friendly Pyro) and it has such a rich background lore that I found myself keep exploring and discovering new things.

Finally, my moment when I thought this game was at least a 8.5 ~ 9 is when you stand on top of the church and look at your surrounding. You go to all those places you see (and more) but while you are there it feels like you are at a whole new world. When you are in the deep tombs you can see below you a mysterious forest and a giant lake - it drives you forward to discover what that is.

That's probably what they did best with this game - THEMING. But as I said in the beginning, game's biggest pro and con is the fact that they don't spoon feed you any aspect of the game. The enjoyment of the game is really up to the player. This is one of the games that really shines in the hands of the right players.

I'm a PC gamer, actually.  Try not to be so presumptuous, it makes you look like more of an imbecile. And attempts at belittlement simply prove to me how shallow your argument is.

    A) I shouldn't even have to point out to you that a "decade old" game would have been back in the PS2 era, and that the game is only about a year old. Sure, sure, the consoles are getting close to being a decade old (Even though they still aren't actually a decade old, as I'll have you know that a decade is TEN years. Try to memorize that one.), but the games that are being made for consoles are still evolving as far as graphics are concerned. Hell, the best looking games I've ever seen are on the PS3. Just take a look at the Uncharted series, and Journey. Very few games come close to the level of detail of either of those games on a frame-to-frame basis.

    B) Of course developers shouldn't pander to you. They should release their product, fix any bugs or glitches, and potentially rebalance the game if it is absolutely needed, and even that's only really for PVP. If From Software had pandered to their playerbase from the start, this game never would have been made. Their previous game would have just been another boring old ARPG if they had nerfed it into the ground when people started /femaledog/ing. When I first played that game I hated it because it was too hard, and I would have loved for them to make it into an easier game. But I played through it anyways, and past the first hour or two, it just got more and more fun as I went, eventually becoming one of the best games I've ever played.

And of course, there's the other kind of pandering, that's less gameplay oriented. It simply comes down to this : They created a game, and they brought it over to the PC in 100% working order. Anything past that is pandering. You got what everyone else got, stop acting like you deserve more just because you're entitled and think that your platform earns you special rights. It doesn't. Not unless developers decide they want it to.

And before you say "Eueehh, but it doesn't work properly! The keyboard and mouse is aaaaall fracked up!", that is geniunely because this game is too complicated for a keyboard and mouse. There's just too many buttons you'll need to press in a combat scenario. For an RTS this would be fine, you could just pause the game and press the buttons as quick or as slow as you please. When you've got a dragon barreling towards you, it's a bit more difficult to utilize the proper hand gymnastics to lock on, roll, scroll through your mini-inventory and press E if you need to heal (which, in this game, you probably do), two hand your weapon, and then sprint to catch the dragon to attack it in under about 1-2 seconds before it turns around again and eats your face off.

All of that is both easier and more comfortable with a controller. That is undeniable, especially so if you haven't even tried both. It isn't From Soft's fault that a keyboard and mouse is simply unfit for the game they wanted to make, and if they decided to make it more friendly for a keyboard and mouse, they would have to severely dumb it down.

And C) I'm sick and tired of your only argument being about graphics. What kind of moron are you to simply ignore a potentially good game because it doesn't look good enough for you? You're a PC gamer, and I mentioned this before, but it's worth doing so again : Some of the best games on PC look like crap. Seriously, you act more like a console gamer than I'd expect from someone on this platform.

TL; DR "MAMMY, MAMMY, Y U NO BUY THE 16-BIT CONSOLE?????"

Learn to like the game for the game as a whole, don't just pick something out and decide "Psh, texture resolution not good enough? MUST BE A BAD GAME."

You don't deserve better graphics and texture resolution simply because PCs can handle it. You can get exactly what everyone else gets, which frankly, should be enough. Stop acting like the developers should pander to you when the developers took six months of time that could have been spent making another best selling game TO pander to people's requests.

It doesn't. Not so much with the reading there, skippy? OK, lemme break it down for you since you clearly subscribe the the TL;DR mentality yourself. First off, I pointed out quite accurately in my original post that the consoles were 7 years old. I lumped it up into a decade to demonstrate the point. SSecond, thegraphics are FAR from the only argument I am making. The meat of the matter is just exactly what you as (what I like to term) a terrible consumer are willing to tolerate as acceptable. I call you a terrible consumer because your standards for what is 'good' is clearly so subpar that you and those like you are essentially permitting these developers to put out half-assed products and still pay them for it. And you smile about it like a derp and pass along the good news to your friends that another second rate hunk of crap piece of software has been released and we should all be thankful. I'm not saying the game is too hard, so I'm sorry it gave you some trouble, and you deserve a nice piece of candy for sticking with it. you champ you, I'm saying it was done poorly. And don't even dream of giving me that "herp derp, this game is too complex for mouse and keyboard, lulz" arguement. I've been gaming a long damn time junior, and seen games just as if not more complex than this that pulled it off JUUUUUUUUUST fine. At the very least they had the friggin on screen prompts coincide with the UNIVERSAL input devices of the friggin system they released it on. Just had to revisit this, because the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how clueless you are. I will say it once again, YES they SHOULD pander to me. I am their paying customer. This isn't a free to play game. I would be saying exactly the same thing were I a console gamer and they released a game that requires that I go out and buy a mouse and keyboard just to make it run. Hell, that's not even pandering, that reasonable expectation. They should release their product when it's ready, not rush it out the door to sucker as many people into buying it then release patches for a half-rate product that wasn't done right in the first place. Which, by the way, they haven't even done! The ONLY reason this game is in halfway decent working order at this point is because of an unpaid fanbase that are handy with coding decided to take it upon themselves to try to make this travesty playable. So NO, they did not release it 100% in working order. Or better put, it works, but if this is what they consider "100%" then they have REALLY low standards, and so do you. I'm not saying I am personally special and only I should get this, I am saying their paying customers are as a whole, Including you. So, if they don't want to do the job right as the developer, that is their prerogative. But I WILL NOT stand by and pat them on the head for doing a poor job nor will I cow down to the likes of those that have decided 'good enough is good enough'. If a developer puts out a horrible product you can bet your sweet muscular buttocks that I am going to call them on it.

As I said, you haven't played it, you wouldn't know. This debate has no place to go except in another circle, so I've decided I don't need to waste my time. Several of the points you've made simply imply you didn't read what I say, and others are just wrong.

Play it or shut up, as you clearly don't know what you're talking about.
Oh yeah, skippy, I know exactly what I'm talkin about, if you want to have some clue what that is... go back and actually read my post before you try to comment, You're only proving to be the bigger imbecile.
As I said, you haven't played it, you wouldn't know. This debate has no place to go except in another circle, so I've decided I don't need to waste my time. Several of the points you've made simply imply you didn't read what I say, and others are just wrong. Though, if you'd like to continue this argument, you can just reread what I said, and keep making replies to it, as that's how this would go anyhow. Have a nice time, pal.

YOU say I haven't played it? Well FFS get the hell out of my house! I was unaware you were lurking behind my couch and keeping track of what I play and don't play. I'm so glad these forums have a foremost authority on who is playing what. Golly gee whiz, I wonder what game that was that I spent several hours playing and determining that is was a complete waste of time and needed another few months with a programming team that knows what they are doing to polish and refine before being released... Oh yeah, that's right, I DID play it, and YOU weren't there. As to the matter of "points" I'm seriously beginning to wonder whether or not YOU know what they are, or if you just have a hard time following a conversation thread. I addressed your arguments, highlighted them as erroneous and sheep-like, and you came back with the suggestion that I didn't read what you said. Quite the contrary. Sorry son, not getting drawn into the fight you wanna fight. I made my points and that was the point of my discussion. If you want to know what they are, go back and read, then try to keep up. But I will tell you now that you won't win. My points are airtight. They aren't a console vs. PC arguments, its a question of a sub-par product and the subservient dimwits that back them just because they are game developers.

*sigh* Some of you guys just don't get the game. Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a PC gamer. Some of the biggest whiners in the world. I played 140 hours of this game on my PS3 and have spent over 90 hours on the PC version and I'm in NG++. If you want to whine and complain about it being a port, it's your guys' loss.

Graphics should never be more important than gameplay. Sure the game plays horrible on with a mouse and KB, but tbh even if it worked flawlessly, I would rather play it with a controller. The mod for the game fixes any of its pitfalls and makes it much easier to look at. But seriously, I would play this game if it looked like a game on the Gamecube or PS2.

I run an i7-2600k, Geforce GTX 570, 16gb of ram, ASUS-ROG mobo, so I'm a die hard PC Gamer. Some of you guys are just blinded by the word "port" and "GFWL" and automatically just hate on it. Just give the game a chance, or at least wait for Steam Summer Sales and get it for 5 bucks and then finally realize how awsome the game is. Spend 5 bucks on it, then spend 15 bucks on an Xbox wired controller and get over yourself.

For the rest of us who actually look over the "port" and "GFWL" words, we will enjoy one of the finest games this generation.

Port? GFWL? No my friend, these are not four letter words for me. Nothing inherently evil in them in and of themselves. Many ports have been very successful, very enjoyable, much glee to be had by all. GFWL?... a minor inconvenience to say the least. What bothers me are all the bloody qualifiers that have to be stated whenever an obvious fanboi speaks about this game. "IF you get the mod" (not supplied by the dev)," IF you have a gamepad" (also not supplied), "IF you excuse the horrible-fill-in-the-blank"... Tell you what, IF the devs or the publisher had done their stinking jobs, I wouldn't be so hacked off. IF they had hired a team to code it to work appropriately with a PC, I wouldn't make such a stink. IF they had released it "AS IS" (as so many of you are so fond of pointing out) as a free to play game because they didn't have the budget/know-how/time/interest in doing it correctly, I wouldn't think they did wrong. BUT they did none of that. Subpar graphics in exchange for a great story and thrilling gameplay? Sure, sign me up. But instead they failed on both counts and made ABSOLUTELY no effort to compensate or make reparations for their short comings. They threw this garbage out to the salivating masses with a pricetag attached to it, and like starving dogs, the fanbois are lapping it up and doing their dirty work for them... Excusing a travesty of a product FOR them. Wake up you lapdogs. You're not on their payroll, and making excuses for them makes you a worse shill than Jay Leno selling f***ing Doritos.

For people complaining about controls, you have to remember that this is Fromsoft's first PC game ever. They haven't even done a port before. And they only made the PC version because of a massive petition from fans. They didn't even have to make it, but they went above and beyond and added extra content. And all you have to do is spend about 10 minutes and no money to get it to play they way you want. Stop whining.
