- "All flash, no substance"
When i first heard that a DC inspired MMORPG was being released i felt as though my dreams were coming true, the ability to create and play as the superhero of my dreams had come to life and it was just what i was looking for. Flash forward to a couple of days after it had been released and i found myself at my local EB Games store purchasing it for PC. I took it home, and after a LONG update process, i was on my way to creating my superhero, and here's where the review begins...
My first reaction to the character creation was that there really isnt a great deal available to create your hero with and the menu system is quite confusing at first, not to also mention the laggy mouse speed even on highest sensitivity. I always wanted to make my hero kinda like Superman, except in DC Universe Online, there is no specific option for super strength, its just the characters strength built up as you go along. After my hero was made the game began. As seen in the gameplay video featured on Gamespot, you start off on Brainiacs ship, which serves as a tutorial for the gameplay.
Players familiar to MMORPG's will feel out of their comfort zone at first, atleast i did, due to the action game style gameplay. After coming straight from playing Aion it definately took some time to adjust. One of the worst aspects of the game when you begin playing, is the menu system. Its extremely confusing to find what youre looking for and not very intuitive. Another thing that bothers me, is the XP bar during gameplay doesnt dictate how much more XP you need to level up, the purple bar just grows as you bash baddies and complete quests.
The game world, whether Metropolis or Gotham City, to put it best, is lifeless and dull. The citizens roaming the streets just run around like spastics when you go near them, and the lack of atmosphere immediately makes the feel of the game take a nosedive. Flying, jumping or running around is fun at first, but the lack of speed until later levels can make those journeys between quests just that little bit boring.
In short, this is just a quick review of how i see the game. I only played the game until i was about level 10 or 11, and unfortunately i've just cancelled my subscription nearing the end of a free month. The foundation is definately there for a great game, and the idea is fantastic. All the game needs is a bit more polish, more customization options and a better menu system and it'll become the next best superhero MMORPG. But for now, ill just sit back and watch and see how things go.

DC goes all the right things in this MMORPG but that doesn't mean it's perfect.
