You have to beat the game with Ending A for "overtime mode" then play overtime mode and get the true ending for "infinity mode" (which I assume is what your friend is referring to).

Also, I suggest doing a genocider run to unlock the real mega buster, makes things so much easier!

The thing about infinite mode is that it isnt really "free", its more like survival where your health constantly degrades and the aim is to survive for as long as possible, the title of the mode is rather misleading.

The real "free" mode is playing single player without paying attention to the cases, once you fail one you will have the full 3 days to run around doing whatever you want, heck you dont even have to fight the phychopaths if you dont want to, you could simply run away and they would disappear sooner or later, the only downside to this is that time will still eventually run out and you will have to start again if you want to continue playing which will reset the zombie kill count and take your old weapons away.

The only dead rising game so far that has allowed the player to run around doing whatever they want with no time limit is dead rising 2 off the record which has "sandbox mode", as said this allows you to run around will no time limit, killing zombies or just messing around, it also has challenges to play with.

Anyway, if you still want to get infinite mode but find it hard, you could try doing as said above the zombie genocider achievement. There are multiple guides around the web for it and it will give you the real mega buster (the RMB) which is one of the two most powerful weapons in the game (other is the real lazer sword (RLS) which is gained from the infinite mode), it is able to kill phychopaths in a few shots and comes with about 300 in the weapon.

Honestly just level up once you get your attack up you will be able to 1 shot zombies with most physical attacks, making the game a lot easier. This is mainly because you won't waste item durability on zombies and save it for psychos. The mini-chainsaw is your friend once you get it from the clown. If you get all the magazines for it, you can swing it 2700 times w/o it breaking, so basically enough for a full playthrough if you do it right.

Though you may want to complete cases up until the first story-related boss fight of Day 2. That'll give you quicker access to one of the plazas from the security room.

Meh you don't really need to go in that area for non-story related things as there isn't anything of value for items and very few survivors there.

Sadly, none of the DR games had a real "free mode". Free Mode would be no timers, do whatever you wanted whenever you wanted, like Skyrim or Oblivion or GTA.

Case Zero had a glitch that would let you run around indefinitely, but after 3 days, all the zombies disappeared, so all you could do was run around and play with Combo Card recipes.

It's worth it for quick access to Al Fresca Plaza, an Uzi, some nice outfits, and the hall leading to the Security Room Door that's filled with killable zombies. And a bike, I think.
