That's exactly what I'm doing. I bought the other games and my brother played through them as well. We are both going to get a copy and we agreed to play through single player first before the co op.

Probably, that way I can experience the horror element that some from being alone against the odds. However, I would think it would be kinda cool to experience the dread with a friend. I remember a part in DS2 where the lights went out for about 5 seconds and then flickered back without any necros popping out. I froze during that moment, and I would love to have that experience with two players.

Considering I played the first two in "co-op" (the wife and I alternated chapters) I will be playing this game in co-op first.
