I played my first NG as a Mage (starting class Royal) with a Rapier backup. Just finished my platinum run through NG+ as a Bowman (starting class Hunter) using an Uchi for backup. I've now just started as pure melee, nothing ranged, except maybe to draw enemies to me (even want to avoid that as well). I'm considering not having any spell related buffs either, not sure yet. Just finished 1-2 and I'm headed off to another world tbd later today.

I'm getting the feeling that the real DeS starts here, it certainly is more challenging at the start. Ranged stuff was fairly OP, NG was almost trivial for my leveled up bow. I started this run as a Temple Knight and I really don't like the moveset of the Halberd (very different than the one in DkS). I've got a Bastard Sword though I don't yet have the STR to 1-hand it and a Winged Spear (great range and I think it will be useful until I can use a stronger weapon). I'll add the Claymore when I can afford it. I've only put a few points into END so I can get my rolling back soonest.

I've looked at the build section of the wiki and it appears that STR/FTH builds are preferred over pure melee ones. Just curious to hear other folks experiences with melee builds. Also any tips about progression? I guess I pretty much just have to ignore those storm beasts until I get to the boss area and get Storm Ruler.

I basically only play melee, and it's not so bad to learn. Might be a little frustrating coming from OP ranged stuff, but like you said, in a way this is where the combat truly begins.

You'll have to learn how to dodge most enemies' attacks, get close and wait for an opportunity. It's a patience game, but when you have the right weapons/upgrades, you'll destroy everything pretty fast.

It's also very recommended to 2-hand your weapons for extra damage, and of course, having less than 50% equip load for faster rolling.

As for the progression, most people here recommend doing all the X-1 stages first, then X-2 and 3. Make sure you grab the Crescent Falchion at the Shrine of Storms to make things easier in the beginning.

Pure melee builds really need to have a buff. A faith build does not since you will be using blessed weapons.

Crushing Claymore +5 rocks! Just cleared World 2 to get the DBS and showed it to Scirvir for the Pure Greystone. But even at +3 and buffed with sticky white stuff it made short work of Flamelurker. I never even got close to him with my mage or my bowman build so ripping him a new one with the Claymore was very satisfying. So much so that as soon as I upgraded it I headed over to slice up some Maneater. Somewhere around level 30-35 and have just put a few points in END and the rest into STR. Can't wait to try out some of the other Crushing weapons. Maybe Great Axe next.

Wish FROM had kept the Crushing and Sharp upgrade paths for Dark Souls weapons.

I used to have an account in 2002, but Gamefaqs ate it.

The Claymore is my favorite weapon in DkS. Slightly different moveset (1-handed R2 is a long thrust) but just like DeS it has incredible range and great dead angles. I think the range is even longer in DeS. And the Crushing path is amazing if you want to specialize in STR. I haven't played a high DEX build yet but I imagine it is the same for the Sharp path. I don't have enough END yet to fully use all the combos yet.

I used it fully upgraded for the first two levels of World 3. I couldn't believe how fast the Fool's Idol fight went and the Maneater fight was fairly easy too. I kept hitting the flame pot in the middle of the area instead of the Maneater. Didn't know you could chop of their tail!
