Here's a couple of videos I made to show what I mean:

I didn't really enjoy stealth/non-lethal play in this game until I discovered these techniques.

Stuff like that takes the fun out of the game for me. You know, abusing glitches and the like.
I started to have fun playing stealthily after I upgraded my crossbow with a scope and mastered pistols so that I could knock out guards quicker. Using cloaking is good too.

actually, many ppl sustain that normal darts are only made for the purpose of distraction... but that's only partially true, since they can kill with 1 headshot. They can however, be ALSO used as a mean of distraction, thanks to the awesomeness of this game that allows this kind of tricks
Anyway, I am quite surprised to notice that the xbow is one of the most appreciated weapon in the game. There have been A LOT of xbow threads lately, including one made by me (and pointlessly archived).
It seems that, despite its harsh game implementation (and crude, unfinished mechanics which sometimes turns glitchy and unclear) and despite the fact that therefore this weapon is MUCH harder to use than a regular stealth pistol, xbows are just a "catchy" weapon somehow... and I must say, Deus Ex: Human Revolution implemented it quite decently. But now I'm off topic...

After the first level you can add laser, scope, and accuracy mods to your crossbow, and if you have pistol training you can pretty easily snipe guards from far away, where they can't start shooting you. It's fun watching them shoot at the air and then run away dripping blood looking for their buddies.
