Yeah, I was one of those guys who got to Phantom, hated the camera angles and whatnot, and just sort of let the game drop. I'd really like to try seriously getting into it though since I do enjoy this style of game (big God Hand and Bayonetta fan). So, does rolling give you invulnerability frames? Or do I have to avoid Bayonetta syndrome where the dodge button avoids stuff even when it collides with you?

    That's the video! :p

Short answer: rolling and jumping give you i-frames. Once you get the timing down, it makes not getting hurt piss-easy. Though for a beginner, it's probably safer to jump/roll away before the attack connects. You can usually see/hear the attacking coming a mile off in most cases, eg Phantom's fireballs.

The camera angles in DMC1 never bothered me, but even I have to concede they were pretty bad in the cathedral. The camera changes at the same few fixed points in each area, so once you know where they are and when to expect them, they do become a lot less jarring. For the cathedral Phantom fight, try to contain the fight to the altar or central aisle if you can - and don't forget to Air Raid his arse. (Or Stinger his face after dodging his claw swipe.)

The camera during the first half of the Griffin 3 fight is arguably the worst camera in video game history.
