Disgaea fans, I need some advice. I've only dabbled in this series here and there, borrowing a game to try out. It's something that I didn;t want to invest the time into, but I'm coming around.

I see that the first 2 games are going to be released on PSN, so my question is should I start with one of them, or just pick up 3 or 4 for PS3?

    Thanks in advance.

We don't know what systems you own besides a PS3, which is pretty important seeing as the Disgaea series generally just offers gameplay refinements to the existing formula, making the ports of older games more refined in some cases than the newest entries.

Anyhoo, Disgaea 2 is probably the best game, overall. Everything works the way it's supposed to, the jobs, monster units, and gameplay in general is at its most balanced. Disgaea 1 suffers from being the second SRPG the company did and being just a flawed gem of an Tactics Ogre clone with a 9999 level limit. Disgaea 3 and 4, due to bad/lazy design kinda toss the idea of balance out of the window, making a game where offense is the first, last, and only defense. All IMO, of course.

Personally I'd get the PS2 version of Disgaea 2. People say 1 has a better story, but if you give a **** about that you should play Makai Kingdom, Soul Nomad or Z.H.P. since they blow every Disgaea out of the water.

You know what? I agree about Disgaea 2 and the balance.

Would you recommend the PSP version? Does it mess up the game in any way, as it came out after 3?

The best Disgaea to start off with is definitely 2; especially the PSP version. 1 has some things that 2 does and 1 doesn't, like a bigger item bag. You can only carry 16 items in 1, for instance. 2 lets you carry 32. Also, you can level up your Healer class by simply healing HP in 2.

The two things I don't like about 2 the most is the Felony system and the whole idea of having to grind up 255 weapon mastery levels. I don't mind having to grind up 99 weapon levels, but 255? That's too much, even for a grind-heavy game like Disgaea.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll give 2 a try when it releases on PSN.

Dark Hero Days is nothing but improvements. It's mostly just small stuff here and there like showing you your hidden felonies in the status screen, the option to buy ingame BGM and use it for Item World ala Disgaea 3/4, but it adds up considerably IMO.

I've only played 1, 2 and now playing 4. I would say go with 1 or 2 first. They are both pretty good. Each version seems to make the game a bit more complicated so if you start with 4 you will have a lot to learn.

But yeah, 2 is a good choice. I have played 1 and 2 both multiple times.

    Awesome.
    I'll play that one, then.

I have to say, I enjoyed Disgaea 4 main campaign quite a lot, but when I got to the post-game and saw how unbalanced the game is on the offense, I gave up. It's like classes and everything don't matter, it's like the only point is dishing out huge numbers and OHKO'ing things, defense is useless, support classes are useless.

I don't know if Disgaea 2 is any different, but just from not having the stupid skill boosts and the damage numbers being smaller, it already wins me over.

It's much different. You actually feel a sense of accomplishment when you level up a piece of equipment, since you can't just one-shot everything and DEF actually works right.

The answer is... screw it, start with Makai Kingdom.

Only Disgaea is important to play for the purpose of following the story. Aside from that it doesn't really matter. I personally thought Disgaea 2 was the least fun of the series and Disgaea 4 is currently my favorite to play.

I really enjoyed Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom though. They aren't quite in the same series, but they really might as well be.
