I can barely afford to buy a single small health at a time, let alone a full health or the 10% health upgrade. And every time I buy something the prices increase.

Don't rely on items. Learn to dodge. You don't really need items once you know what you're doing. Just buy the health and trigger upgrades. It will take you a while, but you wont be wasting money on items anymore.

The actual upgrades you only have to purchase once, so after you buy all of them, you're done. The items / stars are meant to be a crutch for a tight situation and aren't meant to be relied on. They cost more each time to discourage you from continuing to use them.

Once you've upgraded all moves, upgrade points become red orbs. Then you can afford anything

Do not spend ANY orbs on health restores, it will only delay your health and DT upgrades. Some restores can be found in the levels but otherwise it should be a process of trial and error if you are dying a bunch.

The game gives you checkpoints so frequently there's no reason to use items anyways. To keep your score higher...as if that really mattered. Or to live through a boss fight. Otherwise there's no point in using items.
