This game is a relic of the bigoted past and should have stayed in the past

Ok, well a few things, since this topic has gotten out of hand. Ok, first of all the game was made about 20 years ago, in which being gay, and gay characters was still a topic not discussed often. Secondly its by Enix, which was in turn a Japan based company, and subjects like these were not talked often enough..
More importantly, it's a game, and you're aware that not everyone is gay or whatever? Hell, 90% are not gay. That's just a fact, nothing personal. Finally the game was originally made in 1990... This is a port.. It would be a big deal or cause some problems of they included a gay character option in that marriage part. It just would. I have no problems w/it. But someone else might. Make that a lot of ppl will.
On some other notes.. Gay ppl in medieval times? Well not anyone famous that I know of, but there were gay ppl nonetheless in that time period. Same w/animals. Well I've heard of it anyways.

Japanese culture today has a very different approach to LGBT and women's rights issues. In terms of the way women are represented, it's pretty sexist. In many ways I'd say it's way behind even the US in this regard. I don't know if I think that's really change much over the past 20 years, honestly.
In videogames, it's fairly obvious. Women who are portrayed as breaking stereotypes usually end up falling back on stereotypes in the end. For instance, a woman might be a good fighter, but she's also a great cook and a homemaker! She might be a "tomboy" but she's really gentle and feminine when you get to know her! She seems really feminine, but she's actually a bad cook, and that's supposed to be funny and unexpected! Those sort of things.
And gays are portrayed more or less like clowns. See Shadow Hearts. They're flamboyant behavior is an act to make you laugh. I actually do think it can be funny, too (and I'm gay). But you do have to wonder whether Japan is actually capable of releasing maintream media with gay characters that are taken *seriously*.
But, with all that said, this game isn't bigoted because it only gave you the option to marry women. Who cares? It might be bigoted if had homophobic dialog, but I haven't noticed any. I cringe more from the abundant misogynistic and sexist dialog in jRPGs than with LGBT dialog.
Final Fantasy IV SPOILERS: When Cecil leaves the girls behind to go to the moon, that scene always pisses me off. Really, Cecil? You've got to protect the girls because it's too dangerous even though they've been fighting by your side this whole time? If there were children involved, then I would understand leaving a parent behind. But that is just sexist, plain and simple. And not a single man protests Cecil's decision. Screw them all!

This is a disappointing reason to hate on a game you clearly haven't played, before.
