GameSpot's Jonathan Toyad talks to the lead developers of the upcoming PS3 FPS about its console exclusivity, microtransaction plans, and e-sports potential.
I am really excited about Dust. As an Eve player it's an entirely new game mechanic to play, and brings new ships or modules for them, to the game. As a gamer, I think CCP is blazing the path to the future. Bringing not only game genres like space sim and FPS together in a united world, but crossing platforms as it is to boot.
The idea of linking game genres together is an old dream for virtual war fighters. Having one game that has FPS, flight, naval combat, and ground vehicles usually means none of those elements is very good. But now Dust and Eve will have a world where the game you play is tailored just for the type of game you like to play. No compromises, a console shooter on par with Halo/CoD, and Eve, which sort of stands alone in it's niche. Not some forced blending of the two.
Eve also becomes much more than just a space sim game, which I hope will filter down to Dust, and FPS are elevated beyond endless deathmatch battles into a larger context.
All around I think Dust should be good for Eve and FPS in general. Just remember, when that rain of steel comes screaming in from orbit, Mr Dust Player, that little present very well have been sent from me, high above in my Eve ship. Cheers.
this game is shaping up to be a truly ambitious title. they've a lot of plans for this title and based on how successful eve is, they could actually come through on their plans! i'm very interested in this title :D
if eve players can bomb the dust locations and have an effect i think all the disgruntled eve players should unite and bomb the hell out of the dust players :P
@rem234 do you realize that dust players can fire back and destroyed eve ships there is a big huge space gun on the ground
and that will be part of them game
@diabolik_023 it is being publish and develop by ccp which are the ones behind EVE

@Tripwolf All of this is part of Eve Universe. PC gamers will use EVE Online and PS3 users will use EVE: Dust 514. My guess at why it was not made for 360 is because M$ hates cross play games and the ones they allowed are pretty restricted. Also when valve tried to make TF2 free including add ons Microsoft said "Screw you" and forced them into selling the stuff. You gotta realize that Microsofts control over the xbox online features restricts developers from doing anything like this.
Game looks well done...I sure hope it does not turn out to be just another FPS.
why is the so much hate for Dust 514 here hell most of you probably haven't even played it
Question. What would happen if one faction dominated the galaxy? I mean, knockout other factions and take so many worlds that the other teams have no hope of stopping them? Do CCP reset it?
@The-Neon-Seal Eve/dust powerblocks have the same flaws as real life superpowers, they all fall in on themselves eventually.
The last real superpower Band of Brothers fell down when they were betrayed by one of their directors
http://reversegaming.com/welp/mittens.mp3 if you're interested in how metagaming in eve works, this story is what got me to play eve again.
@The-Neon-Seal EVE online has been running for last 9 years. No one has been able to take control on The entire EVE universe. So How can they do in Dust 514?
There is no why that 1 corp can take control on entire Universe!
@The-Neon-Seal each faction has different corps and you can't take over the entire galaxy not sure how much you can control since I don't play eve
@sleepnsurf i paid for the beta, i thought wow this looks awesome, once i got the hang of it i was pretty good at it and i could see the concept. I dunno what they've done but its hard as f@#k now and just pointlessly confusing. Laggy isn't a strong enough word, i know its work in progress but leave this to the pc boys, obviously the ps3 cannot handle moe than 30 frames with over 12 players without loosing detail etc.. yawn...should have made the chip better then. :(
Its very stupid not to release it on PC but meh.. They will probaly regret it later. Cuz im sure FPS games are played better on console then on PC... NOT!
@Alygator I just think its unwise to put such a hit on their own fans, the people who play eve play it on PC and there is no particular saying they own a ps3 and they are saying they cant even play the game connected to eve if they dont have it, not the best choice imo.
It was a major fail to not put this game out on PC. They shall taste their tears 4 months after this releases.
@dashawnthl Not a fan of playing on PC, but I DO agree. I mean, Eve Online is a major hit on PC/Mac, I play it sometimes on Mac myself (not much, I really enjoy the universe, but I have some sort of psychological barrier that keeps me from enjoying mmo's...), the obvious choice would be to release Dust ALSO (or only) on PC/Mac, where we already have a fan base very much consolidated... Plus, Eve is pretty specific, it's a big title, but for a very specific niche, not every gamer enjoys the vibe of the game.
Remind me to say "This looks like dust" when the next new shooter comes out so I can be like the rest of you...
I give this game a try , I love the idea of connecting with Eve players to help them take down their foes.
@sleepnsurf yeah i thought this was gonna be awesome its just confusing, really confusing.
This looks ridiculously slow, boring, and depressing. Why is everything freaking grey!?
@ChiefReaver Damn, you call that slow? And here I was thinking it was another fast paced arcade shooter. I've thought about getting the beta on my ps3 but I figure whats the point. I hate arcade shooters.
@Falzonn @ChiefReaver it isn't an arcade shooter it is a tactical shooter than is more like BF
@shadowhunter0 @Falzonn @ChiefReaver Battlefield is an arcade shooter that employs slightly more thought than some other arcade shooters. Any shooter with incredibly superhero powered soldiers that relies more on twitch shooting prowess than positioning and tactics is an arcade shooter.
You can employ tactics in black ops 2, but it doesn't make it a tac shooter because at the end of the day it takes very little above sprinting at people and holding down the trigger to kill someone.
Sadly, tac shooters are not being made for consoles anymore so people don't understand what the genre plays like. Rainbow 6 is drifting really hard and we'll have to see what they do with patriots, Socom has become increasingly action hero run and gun, ghost recon is CQC gadgetry and gimmicks, OFP went too far into the realm of run and gun FPS with Red River and ended up destroying itself(the company stopped production of the franchise, massive layoffs), and bohemia interactive hasn't put a tac shooter on consoles since operation flashpoint elite on OG xbox.
So i`ve been playing eve for 5 years and regarding the not pay 2 win. Boosters that will help you get skill poitns faster ? That sounds like pay to win to me. If they mess Eve up like they are doing it with dust, id rather play miniclip space shuttle games.
@m4nsonite Pay2Win - Meaning there is no possible way to finish the game without paying.
Upgrades/Premiums - Stuff you can buy to slightly enhance gameplay but nothing that gives extreme advantages. Any guns that can only be bought with Aurum can be matched or exceeded with guns for free users.
Wait... If Dust is going to be PS3 only... why is it on Singularity (the Eve Online test server) right now? clearly they meant PC/ PS3.
@timoteo2k1 EVE online and Dust 514 both are in the exact same universe and servers. From what I hear EVE Online is in the Air and Dust is on the ground.
They will work together very well. Think about it, people in dust call in a air strike, people on eve online respond by bombing the target. It will be awesome!
@timoteo2k1 because it connects with Eve you can send messages between the 2 games join EVE corporations and eventuality Eve players can interact with the battles by space bombardments and corps in eve can give contracts for dust players to do and make stuff like weaps and armor for dust players and that is the stuff that I can think of off the top of my head and I know there is allot more connections between the 2 games
@shadowhunter0 @timoteo2k1 the best thing to do here, is for all the frustrated eve players to bomb the hell out of all the arenas, Thatll show em :P
@shadowhunter0 @timoteo2k1 whats the point... its a FPS game that will be released on console and not on PC. Pretty stupid. The should atleast release it on PC aswell.
@timoteo2k1 It is in closed beta, so why shouldn't it be on a testserver?
It is on the Singularity testserver because this two games NEED to be on the same server to interact (duh)....why do you even ask, with a bit of brainfunction or googling the words "dust 514" and "singularity" this is not hard to figure out.
Where did they say it will be for PC?
In every interview I did read they said exactly the opposite.
@Endauriel and you totally missed the point.... if it's on the test server, then there is a PC version. This video claims "PS3 exclusivity". Building a full PC version that they never intend to release seems a bit wasteful, right?
BTW, Eve player since 2006, fought on the losing side of MC's invasion of the north, fought "the Great War" and was on the Goon side in the invasion of Delve flying under PL, and still a couple of nights a week i roam New Eden kicking sand in people's faces and stealing their lunch money.
This game is a bad idea.
@timoteo2k1 Did you even got a bit of what I've said?
COD is hosted completely on the game system, where the system all others are connecting is callled.....a server....yupie.....and the others are clients. The hoster is always the server, although this is not a Massively Multiplayer Game which makes your statement complete nonesense.
I said with no word that playstation games will work, if you put them into your PC.....I said, a game, that has a multiplayer like Dust, is usually hosted ON A SERVER which is A PC.....it doesn't matter if you connect to that server through a xbox, a playstation or a pc.
And no, there is no PC version for Dust coming out.
If you think so, link the site where we can read that NOW.
@Endauriel Ahh, sounds good... so let me just pop my copy of Uncharted 2 for PS3 into my Pc...nope doesn't work... Farcry... Nope. Here let's try Bad company 2 PC in my PS3... nope. Because there are different versions of games for PC and PS3.... They're offering this PS3 "only" game on PC, which means there is a PC version.
BTW, games like COD... hosted completely on the game system, no server.
@timoteo2k1 "if it's on the test server, then there is a PC version."
Ohhhhh man....but you know what a server is, right?
Just because Dust is using the same server to store the information this both games need to interact, doesn't mean, there is a PC version for Dust. -.-
You wouldn't imagine, but yea....all games with multiplayer need a server, even the ones on Playstation....and a server is usually ALWAYS a PC or a cluster of PCs.
There is no "Server Version" of a Playstation, so if you watch on this like that (Server --> PC Version) then shouldn't there be a PC Version for EVERY Playstation game that uses multiplayer?
