How do you use the stun gun?

After you select it by pushing right on the key pad, you just aim and shoot. Aim with Left Trigger, shoot with Right Trigger. Make sure the target reticle turns red before you shoot.

I have a quick question about the stun gun...I can't seem to destroy mechs who have a shield using the gun, at the end of ch.7 i need to use the gun to do just that or the game wont move on. I've seen a video of someone doing it but it never works....what should i do if i'm unable to get in close but need to use the gun...?
