Plasma weapons work fairly well against deathclaws the truth is there just hard to kill as for getting to new vegas it sounds like your near sloan if so fallow the big road north it should take you directly their stay on the raod its safer and it may take a while to get their and neil doesnt actually do anything you say you just started playing i suggest you level up a little more before heading to black mountain i hope i helped if not add some info and ill see what i can do

I personally like to use the sniper rifle. It's a 3-4 shot kill (for the normal ones) and if you are in the quarry area you can climb through the conveyor belt and pick them off from high ground. Also they have to climb the whole thing too, so by the time they get to you they should be dead.

I had to hug the mountain on the side with Neil to get past em all like in the begining of the game
go to Neils shack and save, use a stealth boy (I think you get one from the doctor in the beginning) and try to get past them, you wont be able to kill them for a while
and if you die reload and try again -
USE THE PUSHY its a specially named power fist one hit kill !!!!

If ur under level 10 there ur not beating them. If ur at sloan 4 the 1st time head south (follow the road on ur map screen) and turn right then head up u will eventually end up near the Vegas strip.

One Spoiler in this reply (flagged at the end).
Deathclaws: Yes! They are hard to kill.
Early in the game, you'll probably need (at a minimum) a scoped weapon plus a safe perch from which to shoot without being discovered (if "Caution" goes to "Danger" you'll probably be dead within 5 seconds -- which is why I suggest a scoped weapon) . Armor Piercing ammo may also help. .
But, if you just want to get to New Vegas (from Goodsprings, I presume) without Deathclaw troubles, take the road that exits Goodspings from the west.
SPOILER (?):
You can't recruit Neil. -
Here's the secret to Deathclaws like the ALPHA MALE and the MOTHER DEATHCLAW.
Use BEAN BAG AMMUNITION.
I died a good few times until I realised it's.. so simple with this ammo.
The normal Deathclaws can be picked off easy peasy with a Sniper Rifle, but the Alpha Male and the Mother who two-shots you (I was level 25 when I did this) kept taking my head off even with Boone.
Find a Riot Shotgun (Gun Runners is where I got mine) and buy Bean Bag Ammo.
When you shoot the big bastards a couple times they'll fall on the ground KO'd.
From here proceed with whatever you want (I switch back to normal ammo and fire about 15 times into the base of their skull.)
Deathclaws are a nuisance and hit REALLY hard, but with the right precaution, nothing is too hard. -
Maybe because deathclaws are armored, i have been killing alot of them with the anti-material rifle and armor piercing bullets. onehit headshots while thier on the attackjump sends them flying, looks funny.
also, you could do stealth sniping, use ED-E to see them, on the compas, before they spot you, and Boone to make them easier to spot through the scope. with this it shouldnt be a problem. and by the way, they cant swimm. -
I agree about pushy. Easily best weapon in game. You find it in ruby hill mine on a dead raider, by a bunch of lake lurks. Also the paladin toaster.

I use an anti-material rifle with incindiary ammo. Flaming death
