Capcom is no stranger to the zombie genre of videogames. Their series of Resident Evil games has been by far the most popular zombie franchise in the history of gaming, with the latest installation, Resident Evil 4, earning huge amounts of acclaim from critics and gamers alike (despite technically not having any zombies in it). They've already announced Resident Evil 5 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but in the interim, they've cobbled together a nifty little next-gen zombie-killing game called Dead Rising.

In Dead Rising, you take on the role of Frank West, hardnosed freelance photographer who gets a hot scoop about some shady events going down in the town of Willamette, Colorado. After chartering a helicopter to drop him into the middle of town, he finds widespread rioting and mayhem. When he lands on the roof of the local mega-mall, he discovers that most of the town has been infected by some kind of zombie plague. Although there are a few survivors scattered around the mall, there's also a few thousand zombies to deal with.

Dead Rising tells the story of Frank's efforts to get to the bottom of the mysterious zombie plague. As you attempt to winnow out clues and interview suspects, though, you're also going to partake in some of the finest zombie-killing action ever to grace a home console system. If you've ever wondered what would happen if you stuck a shower head into a zombie's neck, or attacked one with a mannequin or hockey puck, or threw a bowling ball at a crowd of them, then this is your game.

GameSpot's Game Guide to Dead Rising offers up all the information we have on the game's single-player adventure, from the beginning of Frank's stay to the end. We're going to tell you about the many bosses that you'll encounter, as well as give you tips on the many optional Scoop missions that come along, as well as pop out a few general tips. With a game as large as Dead Rising, though, we're sure there's more stuff to discover; if you note anything that you think would be worth adding to the guide, feel free to drop us a line via the Feedback link on the sidebar. We'll update the guide as we go along with whatever you submit!

i am praying that the sequel fixes the save system (which i find horrible) and the plot (which is worse than the save system)... then it will be perfect ^-^

So I'm at the part of fighting The Butcher, but I don't have a shotgun. And I haven't beat the guy in the gun shop either. What other methods can i use to kill the butcher?

I found out how to beat Brock. Keep doing the Double Lariat move. Stand on the lower level of the tank, instead of the top of the turret.

Done! Completed with help from this guide. FANTASTIC game, even to todays standards. Having a time limit isnt in anyway a bad thing in this game, it gives you a sence of challenge, if you don't like having a time limit, ignore it Still makes for a great game.

Can I have a little help here? When I fight Brock, naturally, he kicks the crap out of me. I have no problem with that. What I have the problem with is this: He does this weird move. It says in this guide that he does a strangle move which slowly takes health. When I fight him, he just comes up behind me and snaps my neck. Any help?

I can't believe how ignorant some of these comment posters are. You don't have to follow the story at all you can do whatever you want in this game. The story isn't restricting you from doing anything your just being retarded. If you want to play the story you can, if you don't then don't. Plus there's infinity mode. Give your copy away to somebody who will actually play it and appreciate it.

Anybody else think they should release an update making the game in sandbox mode? E.g taking away the time limit and letting you do the cases when YOU want to.

This time restriction thing really S**k* the fun out of this amazing game... and I just wish there was a cheat to disable this feature or in other words, an intentionally implemented glitch !

damn i keep getting screwed by this game... it's fun but i can't get very far. i can never find a save point and i always end up dying and starting over from the couch after you meet the black guy and white lady. i can honestly say this is one of the most frustrating games i've played. it's taking me a long time to get used to this stuff. i wish they just let you save from the pause menu, as it's much easier to get killed than find a restroom to save at. also, there's too many tasks going at the same time so you'd have to play it over a few times to get everything. i guess that adds to the replay value a bit?

I would just like to post this for anyone that needs help with this game. About 8:00 or 9:00 the first night, if you're not in Wonderland Plaza, Otis will tell you about the ride that is out of control in Wonderland. What you should do is this: get the katana out of Paradise Plaza, and take it with you to Wonderland Plaza. Go upstairs, turn off the ride, and then fight Adam (wait for him to change methods of attack, then swing. Don't get greedy; he'll destroy your katana if you take too long. Also, you might want a gun, in case he starts throwing poison balloons at you. Shoot them when he releases them if you can; that will hurt him quite a bit.) After you kill Adam, pick up his small chainsaw. Then, turn off the ride, and pick up the small chainsaw that respawns. Now that you have two, you should make a point to find the three books that make it absolutely amazing...they are Engineering, Entertainment, and Criminal Biography, if I remember correctly. Two are in Paradise Plaza, and the third is in Wonderland Plaza. Ordinarily, these chainsaws can kill 100 zombies, but with the three books, you can kill 2700 (3 books worth 3x each). Seriously, cult members go down in one to two hits, bosses are easy (I killed the grocery store owner in four or five, the sniper family goes down with four hits each, etc.). Once you do this, it pretty much unlocks the game for you. Just make sure that you've attained a high enough level that you can carry four or five items all the time. (That might be a little difficult, but it's easy from that point on. You'll level up so fast you won't know what to do with it.)

I love this game, however I got caught by the odd time limit and save system, so I had to restart like twice. So frustrating I nearly broke my controller. But I got the hang of it and I'm up to when the SF arrive. I just read here you need to go see Isabelle at 10am and im at the helipad ready to leave. So I guess I have long trip back to Isabelle through difficult SF people lol. Lucky I have about 9 hours before the chopper arrives. Its like they intentionally made this game to be frustrating or something. Still I loved mowing down zombies in a truck.

the mega buster has 300 ammo and respawns in security room, so you'll likely never run out( unless you never change it or something)

  • mlisen

    Posted Aug 23, 2007 2:13 am GMT

    Word of advice:
When the special forces have come, hiding in the security room until the chopper comes isn't a grand idea.
I ignored Isabella's call and when the chopper came Ed said "hmm, poor guy musta died" (before being devoured by a zombie) or something of the like, anyway, if your gonna hide out, hide out in Isabella's hideout thingo then bring her to the helipad.

The best way to kill Cleuts, at least for me, goes as follows. In the beginning whne you forst fight the zombies, there's a shotgun somewhere near the fountain-like object. A survivor had it.

When you first face the convicts, kill them. Be sure to grab an SMG or two as well.

Use their Heavy MG to kill Celuts.

    There you go.

  • ricketyrack

    Posted Jul 13, 2007 6:39 am GMT

I'm supprised no one posted this way to kill celtus its really this is all you got to do: first run up behind the counter and grab the sniper rifle and then get cletus to pick you up and throw you over the counter (quickly take a photo of him drinking some wine good pp)then run behind those little stands and after every six shots just snip him in the head keep repeting this till he dies then free use to shotguns and sniper rifles.
also does the mega blaster never brake/run out of ammo?

You can find easy battle axes and katanas at the part of the mall with the amusement ride wear you fight Adam. You go up to the top section of the stairs and look for a store with the word "Nicknakeries" on the top and break the 2 cases with something and you can stock up on lots and lots of both weapons! Perfect for acheivements!

To kill Cletus I just grab a sword at Ripper's Blades and run up to him and start slashing. He died fast and I only lost two bars of health. I just drank wine to replenish it.

To defeat the guys in the humvee make them crash into a tree near another tree so they get stuck, then use a katana to kill the driver and then kill then guy with the baseball bat when he moves into the driver seat. Then to kill the gunner, hide behind one of the trees and use a gun to shoot him.
