So, finally, the PlayStation 3 has landed in Europe, and we here in the UK are ready for it. Unfortunately, there still isn't a massive selection of games available for the console at launch, and without the PlayStation 2's Emotion Engine chipset, compatibility with your existing PS2 games isn't guaranteed.

On the plus side, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe recently released a list of the games that it's been working hard to support in the PS3's firmware, and we've picked out the 50 key games that PS3 owners may want to know about.

SCEE split the list into three categories: those that work perfectly, those that have minor issues, and those that have major issues. We've split them up into the Good News, which includes the first two categories, and the Bad News, which includes the last one, plus a handful of the games that don't work at all.

Please note: This story is not an exhaustive list and is not intended to include every single PS2 game. It's a reference for the most popular PS2 games in the UK territory. For a full list of PS2 backward compatibility in European territories, visit SCEE's backward compatibility site.

Works fine (18):

EA's multiplayer sequel should keep shooter fans happy for a while, combining the fast pace of modern-day battle, the ability to jump in various types of vehicles, take on a number of different battleground roles, and rant at your fellow soldiers while doing so.

There's no forgetting the family-friendly quiz show addition to the PlayStation family that has gone on to spawn a number of sequels, all of which seem to work fine on the PS3 as well. Buzzers at the ready, you'll be able to renew those family feuds in no time at all.

Actually, this game wasn't the series' finest hour, but it was a competent shooter all the same. The main problem is that of all the Call of Duty games available for the PlayStation 2, Finest Hour is the oldest and least compelling. Sadly, the other two games, Big Red One and Call of Duty 3, are on the other lists.

Few can argue against the pedigree of this role-playing game that made it to European shores only last year. Even so, it achieved one of the highest scores on the platform in 2006, and PS3 owners can look forward to continuing the long journey on their new kit.

This dusty squad-based game, which started life as a military simulator, is all systems go, as is the Ten Hammers sequel. It's not the best example of the genre that can be found, but it's a reasonable attempt, if a little short.

The name may be the same as last year's Xbox 360 BAFTA award-winning next-generation game, but little else is. It's a scaled-down shadow of what it should be, and you're much better off waiting for the PS3 sequel slated for release in a couple of months.

One of the best action games on the PS2, bar none. This highly acclaimed game lets you take on the role of the mighty Spartan warrior Kratos, who is ready to take on all comers. It's well worth digging it out and playing through it all again...

...unless you're all set to buy the sequel in a few weeks' time, which is more of the same, and great fun. There are various rumours of PS3 God of War games in the works. Should the rumours be true, such games will no doubt prove extremely popular.

Roll up your sleeves and step into a supercar. Then run some pedestrians down before hitting up your crew for some drive-by action. The sun-drenched, three-island setting for this GTA game loses its appeal only if you've played San Andreas, which, unfortunately, most people have, and which, more unfortunately, isn't on the "Works Fine" list either.

Taking the franchise back to the setting for the first 3D version of the game worked well on the PlayStation Portable, but a little less so on the PS2 despite the budget price. Once again, it's impossible to forget that this isn't the most advanced version of the game.

One of the storytelling foundations of the PS2 platform, Ico may be one of the oldest games mentioned here, but it's a classic. It's worth revisiting the tale of a boy, set to be sacrificed, who rescues the mysterious Yorda and then sets about to escape the castle with his new companion.

Released in Europe only toward the end of last year, this Square Enix role-playing game is certainly one of the better examples of its genre. Given that the Final Fantasy titles don't all seem to be fully compatible, this one could be important for role-playing fans looking to keep playing PS2 games on their new hardware.

The plastic men (and droids) are back in their classic setting, giving you the chance to romp through brick-based environments fighting bad guys. It's not the most significant game to transfer smoothly to the PS3, but it adds a nice touch of variety.

This, of course, is the special edition of original MGS3 release, Snake Eater. Fans should be pleased that at least this one made it in one piece, as other games in the series most certainly did not. It'll be nice to take advantage of the multiplayer functionality and relive Solid Snake's adventures one more time.

The atmospheric, emotive action game that set the critics talking last year and resulted in two BAFTA awards is going to work perfectly on the PS3. There are only so many times you can play through the game, but this'll be a good opportunity to give it one more bash.

Not the world-beating (into submission) games that the PC editions were, but The Sims series is popular nonetheless. If you are a fan of the console ports, you'll be pleased to know that the entire PS2 series is A-OK.

For UK gamers, the Tomb Raider series has been one of the key pillars in PlayStation game lineups over the years. Quite right that the latest version, in a return to form, makes it through unscathed.

Works mostly fine (7):

No word at this time on the status of Burnout Dominator, but at least Burnout 3 should be mostly fine. Confusingly, Burnout 2 doesn't work at all well, while the original game plays properly. Go figure.

The latest in Activision's WWII shooters, this one's only so-so in terms of compatibility--which is a shame, since it's a high-profile game that's only a few months old. Fortunately, you have the option of picking up the PS3 version instead.

This is something of a blow, given that the game has only just been released in Europe. There's no indication of what glitches there may be in this one, but this is surely a flagship Sony platform game, and it's surprising to see it on what is essentially the PS3 backward compatibility B-list.

This is the game that, for many, has propelled the PS2 from a would-like into a must-have. We were impressed by the visuals back then, and they still bear up now--just not quite as well on the PS3.

Another game not to make it across without incurring some damage is the Prologue edition of the current flagship Gran Turismo game. We're not sure quite how it's not firing on all cylinders, but there are a lot of copies out there, and none of them will work flawlessly on Sony's new kit. That said, according to Sony, Gran Turismo 4-proper doesn't work at all. The message is clear: Go to Japan and download the HD edition.

Undoubtedly one of the best games to be released in 2005 and one of the best horror action games ever, Resident Evil 4's presence on this list means that at least it will be playable for the most part.

For sports fans, the backwards compatibility document isn't particularly happy reading, but at least you'll be able to stroll down the latest virtual fairways without too much disruption. Then again, a PS3 version is scheduled to ship in March.

Final Fantasy XII works perfectly on the UK PS3s, except that during the CG cutscenes, almost everything that moves trails like you're watching it while drunk.... Otherwise it's fine.

In the UK we were never given any console option that had BC - from day one - that's one reason why I've still not made the jump. I'll stay with what I have until next-gen console prices drop by 50% compared to what they are now. That's the only way to make your opinion count, hold back on the cash...

I was all ready to purchase a PS3 just after Boxing Day, well a 60GB version, only to find all remaining stocks had gone. 40GB version? no BC? Umm no thanks. I was going to buy a PS3 when Resi 5 and GTA 4 came out but now ive decided against it and may buy a much cheaper 20gb 360. No i wont be able to play my old PS2 games on it, but ill have to deal with it. Yes, i still could buy a PS3 as the 360 also does not solve my problem with the BC of my old ps2 games, but after how sony have treated many many loyal PS users such as myself who bought the PS1 and 2, i just CANNOT give them my money. I can afford both, but as a matter of principle Sony can go to hell. Add me to the long long long long list of Sony followers who have defected.

It would be nice if the 40GB model in the US were backward compatible. Here (USA), Sony wants us to shell out half-a-grand to play the PS2 titles that we still like. It's one of the reasons that the Wii is out-selling PS3 stateside. Many people I know ditched their PS2s and got the Wii. They simply by GC versions of their favs and play them on the Wii.

@jamestillett: Firmware 2.10 now supports OutRun 2006, but sadly it locks up once you hit the car colour purchase and car purchase sections of the Showroom in Coast 2 Coast mode, and the car select screens in either Coast 2 Coast or OutRun2 SP modes. Baically, the game's locking up the moment it tries to load the car models.

This is just sooo very sad. Alot of people are saying that this does not matter but i promise you backwards compatablity is (was) a huge reason to buy this system.

Now you have to carry around 2 systems just to ensure that you are able to play all the ps2 classics as well as the new PS3 titles. Sad. Even FFXiI? So Sad.

What's even worse is that the 40GB version of the PS3 is not backwards compatable with the ps2, AT ALL!!!

Why? I don't understand how people can say this is not a big deal. I guess its just fanboism at its worst when your "company" can do no wrong. I'm a pretty big nintendo fan, but if the wii lacked GC support i would be shaking my head at nintendo as well.

I'll still get a ps3 due to what kinda games i like, but i'm gonna wait even longer now until these problems get fixed.

If PS3 is the only console to have disappointed you then you must be disillusioned. And the new PS3's run PS1 games just as well as the others, which so far has looked to be pretty good.

Do any of you people who frequent these comments have a master's in Engineering? No. Do I? No. Which is why i don't go around spouting stuff like "PS3 is the best console in the world" comments. Oh yeah for those who say they have a degree, you are all liars. Don't get me wrong I love the PS3, in fact i only have a PS3...and a wii for my little brother. Doesn't mean i go crawling on forums saying this console is better. All have strengths and weaknesses so please children (this refers to those people age 16 and above as those who are lower don't act like them.) stop bickering like little school brats and be adults. Just reading some of these comments makes me sick on just how low human beings can sink themselves to the point where they argue and go at each other's throats over Consoles. Games are fun and are a part of everyday life for sure, but it seems to me for most people, it is actually ruling their lives (like the ones who waited in line for a PS3...seriously do you not have better things to do with your life or really, does it revolve around games?) Oh yeah and when you post your comments please use proper grammar, though I feel that some of you are incapable of doing so anyways.

    Cheers

Bully, Final Fantay X/X-2, Okami, and GTA all work on my machine, only slow down occuring when i disconnected my PSP from teh system. Furthermore, out of 75 PS2 Titles i own, only three are not supported: Escape from Monkey Island (rubbish anyway), MGS2 and Transformers. All teh PS1 games work as well.

It also seems that any game no appearing on the list at all have a high likelhood of working: for example FFVII, FFI, FFII, Jak 2 (UK version), Jak 3, SSX 3. However, a few not on te list work, like Transformers.

To those who say buy the american console, don't bother as the change will soon be implemented worldwide. I am also very happy just Playing Resistance, Motorstorm and Tekken on my new console. The BC situation on PS3 is currently better tha the 360 as there are only maybe 300 games supported as MS dropped teh old system almost immediately. It can be practically guaranteed that all teh big namePS2 releases will be supported by PS3 before they are released. GOW 2 is not released for another few weeks, and its supported already

People are not happy about the PS3 situation, I know of a couple of people that cancelled their machines when they learned what Sony had done, some people have a large number of old titles which they still play and constantly swapping machines is a pain, especially were a family unit uses the machine. Sadly, as usual, some try to defend Sony by attacking other platforms instead of looking at the bigger picture. There is no doubt that even in its downgraded UK/EU form the PS3 is still an excellent machine but Sony have ripped us off again. With the current exchange rate the PS3 is almost $235 dollars more, the emotion engine reputedly saves Sony $8 per machine, therefore the UK/EU machine actually costs $243 dollars more to UK/EU buyers, so think how that translates if sales go into the millions, which they will eventually, though at the moment some retailers still have stocks which in itself says a great deal; the PS1 and PS2 were impossible to purchase after the launch day. So stop knocking other machines, this is an issue that is about Sony and what they have done. To those who have bought the machine, just be happy with it but be aware that Sony have not played fair, again. Finally, food for thought, if Sony have have downgraded what is seen by some as an important part of the machine have they downgraded anything else inside?, maybe only time will tell.

Tennesseerules - You claim the PS3 costs the same in the UK and US? You're dead wrong. The exchange rate means the following:

    UKĀ£ 425 = 834.8275 U.S. dollars

That took me 30 seconds to find out on google. When you grow up a bit and learn to use the internet, you can find out similar exciting facts, and then you won't have to lie repeatedly in public

So the US PS3, which is JUST PLAIN BETTER than the EU PS3, costs $235 less, which is almost enough to buy a WII with! If you don't think that's a big price difference, you wait until you have a job, and you're not just begging mummy to buy things for you (very successfully, no doubt). So we are paying a great amount more for an inferior product.

As for "none of this will matter in 6-12 months", well, that's partially true. In 6 months, this will still matter. I mean, are there ANY good PS3-exclusive games DEFINATELY coming out in the next 6 months in the US and Europe? I can't think of any, off the top of my head. In 12 months, with a reduced price, and some actual decent games? Yeah, I may buy a PS3. I'll have had an Xbox 360 for more than a year and a half then, though, and I bought it late, and I'll have bought a whole array of Xbox 360-exclusive games, including BioShock and Mass Effect (and Halo 3?). So, by the time typical gamers like me get around to getting a PS3, the Xbox 360 will have moved a lot of units, and sold a lot of titles, especially in Europe.
