@manu97416 RAM is overrated nowadays. 2GB will only affect load times, not in-game performance. The problem is your video card, which is a mid-range laptop card. Your laptop should be able to run the game with low to midrange settings, try turning off ambient occlusion, and MOST DEFINITELY turn off PhysX! The only advantage to having TWO(not one, but two Nvidia cards) is that you can run PhysX on one card while the other processes your graphics. This can be achieved using modified ATI drivers, but either way, this is unattainable on a laptop.
SettingsWandering onto the settings page, you can find a few settings to tweak, but there's only one you need to worry about, outside of Apex PhysX (which we'll discuss on the video cards page). Ambient occlusion takes a decent chunk out of frame rates, and it should be the first thing to go in your hunt for more performance. We'd look to shadows and resolution after that.

System Setup: Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, eVGA 680 SLI, 4GB DDR2, 750GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA Hard Disk Drive, Windows 7 64-bit. Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GTS, Nvidia ForceWare 258.96.
My system: Dual Core E2200 @ 2.2 Ghz 3 Gig RAM Geforce 9600 GT 1 Gb All settings on high (Ambient Occlusion off) 30 to 50 fps (depends on the game scenes)
@simarsaini006 Don't worry dude, just install the Directx and PhysX software that came with the game and your good to go.
i have high end machine with core 2 extreme cpu but mafia still not run in it.while starting the mafia icon appears and exits.
I have Core 2 Duo 2,93 GHz,4GB DDR 3 RAM,Nvidia 9500GT 1GB DDR 3 VRAM and Windows XP 32-bit.Will game work fine?
Playing this game maxed out on my HP laptop vista 64, 8200m graphics card,3gigs of ram...it's all about teh power.
Reading some coments looks like this is the place where a bunch of little boys who put something like "playing all settings super ultra high at 700 fps in my new computer".
Dunno what the fuss is all about this PhysX stuff. Would like to see the diff between my rigs and one with a beefy NVidia card. Anyway, the game runs just fine on both my comps. One has the i7-860, Asus Maximus III Gene mobo, Asus Matrix 5870 2GB Platinum GPU, 4GB KHX RAM and Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bits... Other has an i5-750, Gigabyte P55M-UD2 mobo, 2x Sapphire 5770 VaporX in crossfire, 4GB Team Elie RAM and Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bits... Got an 'old' Asus EN8800GTS 512Top somewhere. Maybe I'll plug it into the Asus mobo and see what gives...
The reason why they are not using ATI here in this article is because they are talking about Physx and Nvidia cards are the only cards that support this because it is an Nvidia technology... (was bought by Nvidia). You used to be able to use an ATI card for your primary graphics card and an Nvidia card as a physx card but to my knowledge Nvidia with it's latest drivers have put a stop to this. Assuming you can still use a backdated driver to get this to work however. But to answer your question, that's why they didn't test with ATI cards. On a side note with my Sapphire Vapor-x 5870 I am getting an average of 60fps slight OC on the GPU with Physx turned off and 16xaa and AF
i think my pc would be allot better for games if it just had a 4gb ram i have 2gb ram core i5 750 ati 5700 hd 1 tb hard drive excelent system except for the ram
Why don't you guys ever use Ati cards in your setups? Even after the disappointing reviews the new Nvidia card got you refuse to use Ati cards in your high end setup?
Hey..I've registered at GS few years ago but this is the first time I post here. I just wanted to say that I finished this game on my eyefinity setup (rezo: 5992x1080), PhysX high, AA off, everything else maxed out and the game was very smooth and playable with the average benchmark FPS is ~28!! Running single 5870 with one 8800GT for physX.
Running it on maximum settings (including PhysX), and i only have a core 2 duo 3.00ghz, geforce 9600gt and 4gb ram (no lags ofc) Can't see this high-end setup as correct...
The benchmark in this game is deceiving though, I've run it several times with all sorts of settings and I get mixed results no matter what. I am currently using a gtx 460 and I can run this on all high minus aa with full physx and it will run just fine. Sometimes I have to start the game, then run the benchmark a few times before I get the desired results (without changing settings.) I bet a dedicated physx card wouldn't hurt, but it's not necessary.
This game runs smoothly on my rig with all the bells and whistles turned up to full, including the physx. My rig runs with a single GeForce 8800 GTX so the above review is misleading. Rest of rig: Intel QX9700 quad core 8Gb ram DDR2 Gigabyte X48-DQ6 motherboard Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
this is why people dont make great games anymore. because of all these C*nts like you all who want to see pretty gfx. F*ck Apex Physx I Say... I mean seriously if any of you have played Mafia, you would be disappointed by this piece of crap game. I have played it from the end to the beginning and this is starting to get as bad as the Godfather sequel, well not that bad but you get my point. stop b*tching about gfx who cares about gfx, I trade in Mafia2 for Mafia, MW2 for MW1, Resident Evil 5 for RE4... and the list continues...
That does seem a little steep for Physx. I will have to get it just to see how my three 260's hold up. Also, most "enthusiast" who prefer ati usually run a 9800 (or other nvidia card) for dedicated Physx anyways... Would actually have made a nice test to throw in a 5570 + 9800 or a 5870 + 9800 to compare. O, well... Cant wait to play! ^_^
I've finished story mode too. My PC: AMD 7750+@3,1GHz clocked, 4GB DDR2@1066MHz, GA9600GT 1GB heatpipe(not clocked), Audigy 4, on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and Forceware 258.96. Apex PhysX at High, shadows at low, all other settings at high, AA on, AF 2x at res. 1280x720 working about 23-30fps, I know it's not perfect, but I am very pleased. Must say, better graphic then this I don't need. I was simply thrilled with graphic quality! P.S. Apex PhysX RULES!!!!!
Just finished Story Mode. Great game, I've actually managed to get it running in a single 8400gt. It was a bit lagged and I had to use the crappyest video config (nVidea Physx OFF). Still the same, I've enjoyed every minute. thx.
Nvidia have said not to mix the 4 series with an older series GPU for physx as it will actually slow it down. i dont know how much truth is in that! However, i get the same fps with a GTX295 paired with a 8800GTX as there gulftown rig! and i'm only on a q9550 @ 4ghz
AAAAHH!! Only just got my PC 6 months ago and its got no SLi support. Didnt think you'd need it for an essential visual effect like physx just yet. Well, atleast my machine might meet its match when I decide to give this game a go. Dont really wanna fork out for a new mobo and graphics card just yet, maybe next year.
I have i7 quad core with GTX 295s running in SLI, 12 GB RAM, with 2B dedicated to Physx... problems??? I don have no steenkin problems! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Well i have C2D E4300 running @ 2.8GHz with 9800gtx+ and all settings including Physx Maxed out (without AA). Game is running great. How do i do this ? There is a tweak for disabling physx effects for clothes on other characters but yours (Vito). They are really unnoticable most of the game and making major performance hit. Check this http://physxinfo.com/news/3628/mafia-ii-demo-tweaking-physx-performance/.
@ hesham_eraqi The game runs well (30 fps avg) with Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5670, 512MB , AMD Athlon 2 250+ , and 2 GB RAM at 1920x1200 without any physics turned on high shadows , medium geometry and no AA , for me the High-End System here is too great for this game , with my spec I ran the game with no problem.
I ran the Mafia 2 demo today, several times at differnt settings. It looked great maxed out. Is the demo represenitave of the retail game? If I can get great results with the demo, cab I do the same with the game?
Great work selling nVidia products, GameSpot. Very shallow 'performance review'. You should stick to hyping paid-for titles, you'll use less Vaseline that way.
@turokpooria Is that relevant to the post? No... Thank you for spam however. Strange, I have PRETTY much the recommended system, and mine is fluid ALL the time... usually there are slight glimbs.
Although.... after reading a couple comments, maybe I should try Win7 before I upgrade anything else on my system... I forgot about the inherent performance boost you get with the Win7 OS for gaming...
Looks like I'll have to do better than a GTX 260 for full game performance and the physx options. Was thinking about getting another card this christmas anyways but damn, Physx takes alot to power.... I get excellent frames without it in Mafia II but I'm one of those guys that if it has a cool option, I want it on =P And it's kinda funny but I have a mobo with a onboard 8300 chipset that can be used for dedicated Physx support, too bad Physx even on low-med just crushes it. Looks like I might go the same route as Vandaman and have my 260 as the dedi Physx card....
I have recently upgraded to a gtx480 and dropped my previous card to a dedicated physx "gtx 260". Game runs smooth with 80+fps, my amd 965 be @ 4hz get a hell of a work out at peaks of 80\90%, gtx 480 holds 80% usage plus while gtx 260 may get 30% use tops what an awesome game, game is pretty linear and am alrerady waiting on dlc content hope its soon!! The physx sure r pretty just like your mouth lol
I'm running two 9800 gtxs with a phenom ii x4 and 16gb ram . This game runs great with very little lag, only on the benchmark. I'm wondering where the ATI love is too. I can't wait to get my 5870!!!
Ya i wish my 9500 GT could run a little bit better physX... I can run it, but not that fast. Im getting a new processor soon so now i will finally be able to actually run games like these.
