Alan Wake is my Max Payne 3. It's too bad Remedy didn't do Max Payne 3. I can already tell Max Payne 3 will be a disgrace to the first two. His face bald or not doesn't even look like Max Payne. It'll be a similar disappointment to how F.E.A.R. 3 was compared to Fear 1&2. I thought GTAIV was a total let down and I'm willing to bet Max Payne 3 will run like crap with a pi$$ poor storyline. I can run Alan Wake perfectly which is an incredible game far beyond GTAIV when it comes to graphics but still can't run GTAIV without micro/moderate stuttering.
We take a look back at the first two Max Payne titles with Sam Lake, the writer of both games, and Remedy studio head Matias Myllyrinne.
Ten years after the release of Max Payne, and with Max Payne 3 due in March next year, we talk to Matias Myllyrinne and Sam Lake from Remedy about the making of the first two games in the acclaimed action shooter series.
Myllyrinne, now managing director at Remedy, tells us about Max Payne's small development team and modest $3 million budget. Lake, who wrote both games and was the face model for the first Payne, tells us how those limited resources meant they had to draw on the 21-member development team, friends, and families for their cast of characters.
We hear about Max Payne's eclectic influences, from Hong Kong action movies to Norse mythology, its distinctive graphic-novel-style cutscenes, and its noir-inspired imagining of New York City.
Lake and Myllyrinne also speak on their involvement with the upcoming third Max Payne game, for which development is in the hands not of Remedy but Rockstar: "[Rockstar] were kind enough to give us builds and then ask for feedback," says Myllyrinne.
"It's been worth the wait," says Lake. "Now getting near to release, it feels like welcoming an old friend."

amazing video! MP1 and 2 were like no other action game I've played before. R* should've hired Remedy for MP3... I mean, you consult them on THEIR game but you won't hire them on?? Seems like a step backwards.
There seem to be a lot of folks concerned about Max Payne 3.. All I say guys is wait and give it chance. I've been waiting for news on the game's release for absolutely ages, now it's finally been announced I can't wait. It will be good guys.. Have faith :)
Max Payne 3 will SUCK definitely The story ended in MP2 when you played it on hard mode (true ending) , all of the faces from the original MP were dead/gone Max in MP3 is fat and bold ??? = wtf I hoped that they would change that but NOooo The idiots from Rockstar havent made a good game since GTA3 , Manhunt and Oni
@Neo_Sarevok - I actually didn't buy MP1 but Max Payne 2 on PC was phenomenal (two words: Cinema Mod). Great story and Max's face really was much better. It didn't get very good reviews on consoles, for reasons I'm not sure about. Although to this day, the graphics on PC are fantastic. Not looking forward to Max Payne 3. Cover system, multiplayer and Rio De Janeiro means I'm out.
@ Vojtass I just hope Rockstar doesn't give MP3 sandbox elements. They should make it a linear shoot-'em-up masterpiece, like the others. Also, I hope they take lessons from MP1's success and introduce robust modding tools.
I finished each MP four times. True masterpieces. It's very sad that Remedy doesn't have rights for MP any more. Such a cruel world, it's their creation for god's sake. Rockstar will screw third episode in big style. ;(
@ quantumtheo I think MP1 did better than MP2 for three main reasons: 1.) People sometimes are paranoid at purchasing sequels if they haven't played the original, so it's harder for those people to jump into MP2 like others did MP1. 2.) The Matrix 1 was a HUGE financial Blockbuster success, and drove MP1's sales for its promise of Bullet-Time mechanics. This was in a time when there was no Matrix video game, so if people wanted their Matrix fix, they had to go with MP1. In MP2's case, however, the concept of bullet-time was wearing thin and the Matrix sequels were less than stellar. Furthermore, the poor Matrix video games sapped a lot of the Matrix franchise's luster, and consequently, MP2's luster. 3.) The modding community was HUGE. I can't tell you how many Matrix MP1 mods there were - it was ridiculous. Ironically, such mods may have further fueled the MP1 PC community. MP2, however, had a slow modding debut. I didn't mod for MP2, but I heard the modding tools were harder to use, so people mostly released cheap add-ons, and rarely anything ambitious, as in MP1.
I still don't know how MP1 did better than MP2.... just the improvements on the dream sequences alone make it worth at least another .5 points out of 10..... MP2 was light years ahead of MP1. The first one is terribly hard to play now b/c of those stupid blood trail sequences.... Bet there's a mod to remove em that I haven't looked hard enough for yet....
I have a bad feeling about the Max Payne 3... I still play the original atleast twice a year and the 2nd one sometimes( didnt enjoy the second one as much but it was still fun). I dont understand why they have changed his face in every game... well i do but comeon, why not just keep the same face? Sam Lake's face is priceless :) And i agree with most of you saying that brazil is going to be hard to make a Payne game in. There's no Noir feel or history in Brazil. It's too bright and sunny as you said. Granted there is alot of crime... but if that's all it is, i don't see this working. And I doubt they will use the amazing comic book like cut scenes again :( That was one of my favorite aspects from the original. Its what made the game, the comic book like scenes and the narration using metaphors plentiful. I loved it. One of my favorite games of all time! I think I heard the same voice in MP3 trailer though, not sure if it was but it sounded pretty close, so thats good but I just don't see how Brazil is going to work. Don't get me wrong im sure i'll play it, i just dont expect it to be the Max Payne it used to be.
lol Max Payne 3's initials are MP3...yaknow an MP3... or MPEG3...audio file...it plays audio...on your computer...or phone... ._. get it?
Dude... he totally didn't sound convinced. It sounded like he was saying "Yeah, everything STARTED well enough" like he had something like "But totally went to hell later" and when he said "hopefully enjoy the game".... I wasn't convinced he liked it much.
Max Payne 1: unique. Max Payne 2: epic. Max Payne 3: average at best. It's a shame the original team aren't on the third installment.
Max Payne is such an awesome game!! I really hope the company switch and new direction works. I am looking very forward to MP3!
Glad to see Remedy supports Rockstar's development of Max Payne 3. Maybe this will shut up some of the haters.
without no POTF(musician band) there is NOT Max payne all idea and history created by them in 2 last episode .. they made alan wake also .
Man it really sucks that Remedy is not gonna do Max Payne 3. It is their creation, it was for them the game is still talked about even today. I really hope Rockstar doesn't turn the next game into another bland third person cover shooter staring a shaved hobo in Brazil.
Anyone else click this thinking the little picture on the home page was Master Chiefs helmet from the front. Or am I the only dumb ass bored enough to ask this question.
@ziproy That doesn't mean much when you compare games from 10 and 8 years ago to standards now... Not to mention a couple million units sold on a $3 million budget is a huge Financial success...and 7.5 million total franchise sales. The market has expanded greatly over the past decade.
@Merex760 pretty much what I think too. The sad thing is that since Max Payne 1 and 2 came out so long ago, a lot of new gamers have no idea what the games were all about. Now suddenly Max is in Brazil, the exact opposite of the snowy and bleak New York. It seems color is all the rage today, with Uncharted and all. Max Payne was never about color or art, it was about atmosphere that's hard to display in such sunny environments as Brazil. Hey, I might be wrong but this doesn't look like Max Payne 3 to me. More like Jeff Hertz, Max Payne's cousin.
brings back good old memories when I was a kid. ;) I love MP 1 and 2, and i hope for the third game to give better stuffs.
MP3 will hopefully be great. I was impressed by the first and second. They always pushed the envelope and the story only got better.
Amazing games. I'm still sad they're not making Max Payne 3. It looks like Rockstar has killed the entire tone of the first two games from the Max Payne 3 trailer. I'll reserve ultimate judgement until after I play it. But I'm not happy with what I've seen.
I might buy it if they had done some research before trying to show Brazil. They put São Paulo as if it was Rio de Janeiro and said we spoke Spanish (we speak Portuguese). It's really sad to see that they really didn't care about what they were showing in the game.
I hope the action scenes aren't inspired from something like modern shooters nowadays... I want some of those comic scenes back... gave the game it's unique way to telling a great story.
