Stop right there criminal scum. Our The Elders Scrolls V Skyrim Walkthrough provides strategies for the main quest, crafting tips, and secrets about guilds.
With the Jagged Crown retrieved the Legion/Stormcloak will have an upper hand. Either way Ulfric will feel that it's time to launch an attack on Whiterun. As a member of the Legion you'll need to defend the city, but as a Stormcloak you will be among the attackers. If you're a member of the Legion first head to Whiterun and ask Balgruuf to allow the Legion to take position within the city.
Your first task is to see if peace can be made before the battle. Take Balgruuf/Ulfric's axe to the other leader, but of course the other will outright reject the offer. Head back and get ready for the invasion of Whiterun.

As a defending Legionnaire you'll have a huge advantage. You start near Dragonreach and have plenty of barricades to keep the Stormcloaks out. Head outside of the city and meet the enemy face to face in the open field. You'll already have lots of support from Whiterun Guards and Imperial forces. To make things even easier use a powerful shout such as Call Valor, Call Storm, or Call Dragon. If you have none of these, Fire Breath and Unrelenting Force are also great for stunning crowds. Stick by your allies and you'll have plenty of support to clear out the invading forces before they can make it into the city.

For the Stormcloak version you'll start on the outskirts of the city and will need to reach inside Dragonreach. Stick close to Galmar and/or Ralof as you advance; they are both very strong and can't die during the fight. Whiterun Guards are weaker than Legionnaires so take them out first. Your first objective is to head to the top of the front gate and open the drawbridge. This will involve smashing down the wooden barricades and climbing up the broken wall to the south. Make sure to have Stormcloaks near you as the drawbridge leaver is guarded by a powerful Legion General. However, if you move quickly and hit the leaver, the general and remaining enemies may glitch and become docile ragdolls.

The defenses inside the city walls are even thinner than the front gate. Let your allies deal with the few guards while you smash down the remaining barricades up to Dragonsreach. Inside you'll have to face Balgruuf, Irileth and a few more guards. The Jarl is the biggest challenge of the group as both steel armor and an enchanted sword. If you can, let Galmar take the brunt of the damage while you strike down the enemy. After the fight the Jarl will be exiled and Whiterun will be in the hands of the Stormcloaks.
