Yeah, I'd love to help but I need more information. Which last boss, specifically? What party are you using? What is your paradigm deck?

basically though, Deprotect/Deshell/Imperil/Slow him (you don't need Slow but Fang should have all these,) Poison him if you have it. buff people so they at least have Haste/Bravery/Enfire (after Imperil, think this is the default En-elemental)/Veil helps to avoid instant death/status effects. once that's all in place RAV/RAV/RAV to stagger and then wail on him with COMs. Combat Clinic (MED/SEN/MED) for after he does Merciless Judgment.

if he's dealing too much damage, particularly when about half his health is gone, you could always switch to a mixed offensive/defensive paradigm like Diversity (COM/RAV/MED, or RAV/RAV/MED provided you switch to use a COM every now and again if his gauge starts depleting fast) or something with SEN (though i can't remember how effective they are in this) so you're still building his stagger gauge while healing. recast the debuffs/buffs if they wear off. if he's poisoned you don't really even have to worry about attacking at this point. kinda cheap but it works.

go all-out offensive with RAVs pre-stagger when you can because if you wait too long he'll use Merciless Judgment and reset his gauge.

if it's the last-last boss OTOH, which i doubt, then umm...smack him around? he's easy peasy

or something with SEN (though i can't remember how effective they are in this)

In my experience, the SEN role is useless for Provoking purposes, but having a SEN in your party when the boss uses Judgement or Dies Irae can notably decrease the amount of damage everyone takes from those attacks, and as it happens Dies Irae gives you enough time to Paradigm switch and Judgement is often broadcasted by him changing out his ally sphere things. Now that I think about it, I never tried SEN Snow with his Improved Ward weapon in this fight, but I bet he could keep everyone in yellow health even after Judgement.

At any rate, they have a nice use, but they're not a role you will want out very much of the time - only bring them out to soak up the two big nasty attacks.

    Final Boss Orphan

Make sure you get Veil up and keep it up for the entire fight. Statuses end up being a huge deal.

Alternatively, you can just control Vanille, stick Poison, and hang out in Med/Sen/Sen while Orphan dies.

who should i used in party?

It depends on how you are planning on going about it. Probably Vanille/Fang/Hope or Vanille/Fang/Snow.

am i the only one who almost feels compelled to use the main character in RPGs even if you're not required to? i can't be right. plus Lightning's pretty kewl as far as FF mains go.

i've thought of doing another playthrough one of these days and replacing her with Snow though, the one character who's been neglected both my times through, once i realized Fang's Sentinel + Saboteur combo seemed to make him obsolete.

Well in this game one could say Vanille or Vanille and Fang are more or less the main characters along with Lightning because of their overall importance to the story stretching way back into hundreds of years in the past Indeed due to just how important she is and the way she ties into a lot of character stories, Sazh/Dajh, Serah/Snow/Lightning, etc and the main overall plot during development Vanille was actually considered for the spot as dedicated main/poster girl but they'd already released a trailer showing Lighting in the position so. It's in the Ultimania the bit about Vanille originally supposed to be the main character iirc.

Indeed it's only fitting Vanille is able to completely mock the final boss with Poison/Gestalt for it's first form and instant death on it's second. Her music even plays at various times through the game including during the face off vs the final boss where an orchestral version plays

well Vanille is an important character no doubt. that's different from main though.

and she doesn't really seem too...main character-ish, to put it badly. in terms of personality i mean.
  • Jun 30, 2012 12:52 am GMT
Well they changed a lot around, Fang was originally going to be a man and Lightning more flirty after all

I assume they would have tweaked Vanille's personality some if they had decided to go ahead with her as main to make it more well balanced and more similar to Aerith, Terra and Yuna. She already reminds me a lot of Terra as is, in the second half of the game at least, what with her inner sadness, guilt, self doubt and fear of her power

XIII is perhaps the most balanced in terms of "main" vs. "secondary" characters. It's not a story about one or two people and their help; it's a story about 6 people with convergent goals. I agree that Vanille has a very strong case for being most central to the stories, and is thus arguably the best candidate for a singular main character, but I'd rather argue that each character could be considered the main character, depending on how you want to relate to the story.

  • Jun 30, 2012 1:19 pm GMT
Yup. Just reload the save you made after beating the game. Turn around and head through the portal. From here, you can go right to get back to Pulse or go left to get the Eden and the Edentoise.
