Are there any recently released turn based strategy games that can cure those post XCOM blues?

Does it ever end. Are these really reviews or just articles by game company groupies??? I have to DISAGREE with most of what I have read on this site. There is no real DEPTH to the reviews and they do not often take a critical look at these titles. XCOM has SO MANY FLAWS yet somehow its an indelible experience that will linger on my consciousness. More like a dumbed down, heavily scripted migraine inducing game I wish I had never installed on my PC.

There's a completely free game online called Battle For Wesnoth. If you google it, you cacn find it easily enough. It's surprisingly good for a free game (not ftp but actually free)
2 Like Bloodbowl! The original tabletop game (think American football mixed with chess in a fantasy Warhammer setting where players on a team gain experience and abilities, but can also pick up injuries and die) is a classic game in this genre and Cyanide Studios' pc port is worth checking out (Chaos Edition on Steam) if you are big into turn based strategy games.
It has a few bugs and the AI in Single player is very bad, but online multiplayer leagues and tournaments offer up a real challenge that persists far longer than it takes to complete Xcom!

For those of you who never heard about it, check it out. The classic game - including sequels - are better than last years revamp. But the latest edition is also worth a try.
Get Silent Storm and Sentinels from GoG.com apart from that I only really play the Disgaea series a lot. Completely different though. The former are Jagged Alliance like in an alternative WW2 setting with awesome physics, the latter a silly neverending game of chess with ever changing rules.
xcom was good, all these other games look lame.. Played better looking stragety games like 10 years ago..
1 Like Frozen Synapse, a great in-depth tactical turn based combat game. It's available on Steam (demo too) or via their website.
1 Like King's Bounty isn't a strategy game - it's an RPG. Combat is turned based, but that's it. Game is story driven, with some nice graphics and exploration. Yes, you need to have a STRATEGY, if you want to win, but still KB is not a strategy game. HoM&M is.
Need to speak more clearly or turn the background music down. You have the voice of an effeminate mouse.

@kris1975 I still play Dai Senryaku fairly often. I also still have Shattered Union which works on the 360 too

1 Like Temple of Elemental Evil, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 2, Disgaea, Record of Agarest War(and all the games in series), Growlanser, Fallout Tactics, Front Mission 4(if you still got a ps2), Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 1 and 2, Fire Emblem.
There's tones of tactical rpgs, sadly games like XCom and Fire Emblem see the daylight rarely, it's all action, fps, multiplayer, frags etc. these days :( thank God we got the japanese and Firaxis.

Looking forward to the progress made in this genre. A lot of my favorite games all time reside in this including XCOM and FFT. The newest XCOM kind of dissapointed me and I hope developers move away from probability based attacks. Not my only beef with the newest XCOM, but it killed it for me.
1 Like @thechamp69 XCom games have always had probability based attacks. How could you be disappointed? It was never going to be anything else. And I don't really see why that aspect of the game bothers you. It makes sense, and doesn't take the strategy away. I've seen lots of people bitching about missing shots; maybe they should realize that playing this game with skill involves making sure your squad's position allows them to shoot first, and with VERY high probabilities to hit. Relying on 60 or 70% shots is noobish.

Yep, exactly this. VC 1 for PS3, and 2 for PSP are awesome(altough 2 is worse, and a bit immature).

Thst's a f%&$# insightful comment. I advise you to play the game instead of commenting it without playing, or just go back to Skyrim, buy some dlc for it, build a house and call it Fanboy Mansion.
1 Like Hope someone localizes Super Robot Wars Original Generations Saga. It's one great turn based strategy / RPG out there. I remember the GBA one but it really shines most on the PS2 console back then.
6 Like I made this list a while ago for a friend who was interested in TBS games, it is obviously relevant to the current topic so I'll post it here.
My opinion on best turn based strategy by console generation:
SNES/GEN - Shining Force (or Ogre battle, though not quite a proper TBS)
PS1 - FF tactics
xbox/PS2 - Gladius
360/PS3 - XCOM:EU (I'm assuming console version was similar to PC version, haven't played it though).
Hand Helds (all generations): Fire Emblem
That list I feel comfortable making a broad statement of "best of the generation". I can make no such list for PC games as every few years there is another best TBS game ever. I'll just list some of my favorites:
Heroes I - IV: I think that with IV they got a little off track from what made the games fun, and then V and VI were just not so much my style of game, though still good.
XCOM: All of them, old and new, underwater, not underwater. Can't go wrong with xcom.
Jagged Alliance 1 - 2: The new RTS one doesn't really apply here. And the online one could have been a good game, but punished too heavily for taking damage (healing costs too mcuh money). Also unreasonable real money store was just... unreasonable.
Disciples: While I always saw Disciples as a heroes clones, it really is a great series in its own right.
Civ I - V: One of the few series where just because the new one is different, doesn't make it better or worse than the previous ones. Especially with III IV and V. All three of those games are great games if played right now. They all offer something different enough to make them great separate games, but anyone who likes Civ in generation will likely enjoy all three.
@Courtawulf Disciples 2 : Oh my God, really loved that game.
I'd also put Silent Storm in there somewhere , really great game and one of the firsts with great physics.
1 Like i never discovered FF:tactics excisted till it was to late to lay my hands on it so never got to play it till i managed to track down war of the lions for the PSP
what i played instead was front mission 3 possibly my second favourite PS1 game after FF7
word Front mission 3, 4, and 5 are all awesome...right now i'm playing Front mission 2...pretty good so far its a bit different than 3,4 and 5 but it still is fun

4 Like @Stesilaus Master of Orion 2 was probably one of the first PC games that I ever played.
It really showed me the difference between "hard" PC games and "hard" console games. Hard console games (like contra or battletoads) were like jumping double dutch while someone threw ternis balls at your feet and sometimes the floor was actually lava. Hard PC games made you feel like you were required to play chess against kasparov but your only instruction in chess came from a 15 page manual that you were too cool to read.
