Nothing beats good ol fashioned fantasy anime like Record of Lodoss War. The Slayers is also good and basically a comical spin on RoLW.
No one mentioned Shuffle! or Higarashi no naku koro ni, both very entertaining, Higarashi is a bit disturbing though, but in a good way. Haruhi Suzumiya is awesome as well, probably one of my faves.
Another anime I didn't see mentioned was "X", another oldie but goldie. The main character's name is the origin of my username

Times like these I wish I actually bothered putting the time into playing Clannad because I'm pretty sure there is. :P But, by the same token I wouldn't be surprised that there isn't and its only just Kyou, Tomoyo and Nagisa, but Kotomi needs love too >:[

A traveling puppeteer shows up in a town, meets this weird girl. He befriends her, and several others in the city. Regular life goes on for a while, but the girl has a strange condition where she gets sick when she gets friendly with others. At that point, things get pretty crazy, and I can't say anything else because it would spoil too much. Plus you have to see it to understand, that's why I said it's hard to describe.
