True, most trophies are just that, trophies. I'd rather unlock some cool bonus than getting an unintentional trophy for 50 headshots.

Exactly. The way Nintendo handled it with Super Smash Bros Brawl is a far superior model in my opinion. It rewards you with actual, relevant content from within the game universe(s) rather than just giving you a pat on the back and a larger score to display to absolutely nobody who cares.

I like the concept of leaderboards for individual games. It's when you try to compile it all into one score (Gamerscore) that it becomes nonsense. Like people buying that Hannah Montana game for the Achievements. If it ever came to that... caring SO MUCH about what strangers think about an arbitrary number on the internet that I'd actually buy a Hannah Montana game that I had no interest in actually playing just for the achievements... I'd probably just shoot myself on the spot.

Actually, what is probably my favourite part about achievements is that it acts as a record of my gaming. I can go back and see what I played, how much of it I played, how long it took me, and what silly things I may have done in the game, as well as compare my progress to my friends.

It's why its implementation on the PS3 is so annoying, as the process of comparing your trophies to your friends is awkward and slow.

And then you can aggregate everything together a la Raptor or Giant Bomb and see which achievements are rarer and laugh at the silly people who have 1000 points in Dead or Alive: Xtreme 2 or have played games like Hannah Montana to boost their own scores.

Something like the 3DS's Activity Log seems like a much more sensible implementation of the above.

I dunno, all that does is show time spent and times launched, and it's not visible to others which makes it less useful than it might otherwise be.

Steam has both that and achievements, which is nice, and it's all integrated into your friend list so it's all easy to compare. You even get a far more detailed breakdown in certain games - Team Fortress or Left 4 Dead, for example, have far more interesting stats, so you can see kills by class, favoured characters, weapons, scenarios, team damage, times died, etc.

Nah. I mostly play PC now and Steam achievements are so easily cheated that there's not much point. Plus, those dumb achievements like play 100 million hours just burned me out.

Depends on the game. I can do single-player achievements, if I'm determined enough to do so and if I can get a few multiplayer achievements here and there, so be it.

I agree. When I used to play arcades back in the day, it was fun trying to get my name in one of the top 5 slots. Nowadays, I don't even bother to sync my trophy profile since it serves no real purpose to me. I don't promote suicide but one needs to seriously rethink their purpose for living when gaming becomes that important you need to buy a Hannah Montana game for a leaderboard spot.

I love achievements, I even played some medicore games for them. I don't play for hours and hours to unlock one, but I enjoy when they pop up. The toughest one I got was Rock Band 2 playing the endless setlist in one go. I really, really hope they continue next generation, with out gamer score or trophies carrying over

I've started collecting trophies, the main reason really is because I got sick of buying new games off amazon and decided I was just going to go back and try and play through everything I already have.

Depends on the game for me - I will platinum a game if it's reasonably easy to do so or I enjoy the game. Otherwise, or if a game I enjoy has a trophy or two that requires immense amounts of time invested in them, I don't bother and just play through normally getting all the other trophies I can.

No, couldn't care less how many trophies I get I'm too busy playing the game to think about trivial things like trophies and achievements. Its fine if your bored and can be bothered and have the time I guess but I don't see any point obsessing over them like some people do.

Yeah I care. If I really enjoy a game and want to continue playing it after I've finished my first playthrough, trophies add a lot of extra stuff for me to do and a lot of extra challenge. And there's a nice little feeling of accomplishment when you get the platinum.
