Why won't they be competing with the Wii U?

The N64 was competing with the PS1 and the Saturn.

The GC was competing with the PS2 and the Xbox.

If Nintendo releases a console with comparable specs, they will most definitely be competing with them.

Because that's not Nintendo's plan. If it was then they would release a power house like the others rather than being reserved in power. Nintendo are just reaching HD now.

Also the different peripherals limit the chances of the WiiU competing and that's exactly what Nintendo want. Have limited hardware but innovate on that hardware so they get their own market away from the other two. Like they did with the Wii.

It's a very sound business plan and one that seems to pay off a lot.

What the HD twins go for is power and visuals. Certain people buy them for that. But with the ninty systems people generally prefer gameplay over visuals and can look passed the imperfections. Same with the WiiU. Certain times it will look dated ciompared to next gen systems but some won't care because of the added gameplay elements due to the peripherals.

I don't think Nintendo ever want to "Compete" with the other two. Just go up against them and steal the market the other two don't satisfy

Who says that Sony and Microsoft will be releasing powerhouse consoles next gen?

If anything, the evidence points to Sony and Microsoft releasing underpowered consoles like the Wii U...as there just isn't a need any more for consoles with extreme graphical prowess.

    -

And doesn't the definition of "compete" in the video game industry mean "stealing market share"?

Not the same thing. The consoles are underpowered in terms of modern PCs. The WiiU is underpowered by current consoles if rumours are to be taken as truth. The consoels while underpowered for a top of the line PC will still be a good bit stronger than right now

and yeah I guess I kinda worded that market share thing a bit wrong. contradicted myself.

Unless we see otherwise I'm expecting a normal $400 launch for sony/ms. Being they don't usually make a profit on them right away unlike nintendo, there will probably be tech differences again.

True. It's how I felt soon after getting the Wii. It was like I just spent £180 on console a tiny bit more powerful than last gens GameCube.

Just make sure that the $300 console has relatively decent hardware (better than Xbox 360 and PS3), and we'll be good to go.

nintendo didnt 100% focus on casual crowd NES era and they shouldnt now. NINTENDO RIP MISS YA

SSB on Wii U with NiN will be the superior version

On a sidenote, since Nintendo is advertising this as an "HD" console, it darn well better include an hdmi cable in the box.

you'll pay $300 for a system but then you'll moan about having to spend another $7 on an HDMI cable which you should already have by now? lol. the logic of console gamers never ceases to amaze.

Not great news about specs, why would I really want a 3rd HD twin 5 years too late? Oh yeah, to play 5 to 7 good franchises "upgraded". I just don't get Nintendo. I hope they have an online gamertag like PSN and XBL and have an achievement/trophy system. Nintendo games were basically made for achievies.

With that in mind we have either the 4850 or 4830.The 4850 has 800SPU's and the 4830 has 640 SPU's. Being realistic Nintendo would most likely opt for a GPU with 640 SPU's because of cost, temperature, and power consumption. The Xenos has a theoretical 240Gflops, and the 4830 is around 730. Thats roughly 3x Xenos.

I'm hoping it gets at least a 4830. Some people look at it like gfx whoring, but if Ninty is to receive decent 3rd-party support this time around, they're gonna need a GPU that can, at worst, play X3/PS4 ports at 720p. I've had a gut feeling we're gonna see a 4650 equivalent. Don't know. That Zelda demo was a meek 720p 0xAA. A 4830 would blow that outta the water. This is ME3 on my 4830...1080p, AA, motion blur, dynamic shadows, 3 cinematic lights, spherical harmonic lighting, 8xAF:

    ME3

With a 4830/50, Zelda WiiU demo would've been running 1080p no problem. I loved getting more quality exclusives from the Wii than the 360/PS3, but I want both exclusives and 3rd-party support this time around.

So I'm looking between $700 and $800 dollars next gen then. Good to know. I only plan on getting the Wii U and the next xbox system. $300 isn't bad at all for the Wii U.
