    Ultra Cell Processor.

"We were told today that Crytek was scaling its tech on the assumption that PS4 was going to be using a 24-core Cell processor as opposed to the eight-core unit in PS3. The studio was forced to halt development and start afresh when it was informed PlayStation 4 won't be using Cell at all."

"In addition VG247 has been told that elements of Vita's launch hardware were changed to ensure that PS4 and Vita will be able to connect in a similar way to Nintendo's Wii U and its controller – due for release this year – with Vita's being used to control PS4 games with both twin sticks and touch."
    -------------------------------------------

Looks like Sony got smart and put more traditional and cost effective hardware instead. [Point to AMD powered rumors]

In addition, looks like Sony is going to give developers the choice of using Wii U like controls with the Playstation 4 by using the Vita instead of aseparate pad. Expect for the PS4 to support remote play natively with the Vita, hopefully. Since the Vita is not shipped with the PS4 (hey? Maybe they will :p), I can see a traditonal DualShock controller being the norm use.

Some. Since the market is so little, most games don't support it.

Now with the Wii U launch forcing developers to plan for a pad controller, it would be much easier for devs to just convert that same thing for the PS4/Vita.

lol. No way. Sony is not going the "tech" route again with the most expensive console on the market. If they do, they deserve to file chapter 11.

i wonder how inefficient that processor's architecture would be. that would have had developers committing suicide during porting.
more cores isn't always better, anyway. hopefully they put something with efficient architecture, good clock speed, suitable cache, and maybe a bit more similar to a pc cpu so that porting will not only be easy, but give them good results. i'm glad they aren't going with a cell. while it wasn't impossible to work with, i still feel that bad porting jobs (on either xbox, ps3, pc) had something to do with the cell.
standardizing the cpu won't do any harm. making your console easier to port to and easier to work with is only going to make people want to develop for it. it will also bring more players to the console as i do think some people were reluctant to get a ps3 after the bad orange box, oblivion, and quite a few other bad ports during the ps3's early years.

The VITA controller option is interesting, wonder what percentage of games would require it though, ala MOVE / KINECT

If true, we can also expect a standard PS4/VITA bundle as an optional SKU. I would consider that.

Umm the PS3 doesn't have 8 cores only one core and 8 SPUs.

It's smart to move away from the Cell. It was pointlessly complicated.

and i'm quick to say that this is probably smart. AMD isn't known for high end, enthusiast products. but they sure as hell make cost effective processors that get the job done and then some. i'm surprised not all consoles use amd products because of how well their track record is for what these manufacturers need in their consoles.

I really don't know why they used to go with NVIDIA

At one point, a double/tri/quad Cell was a logical roadmap for the Cell BE, especially if hardware backwards compatiblity was of absolute importance. While yes, programming for whatever amount of SPEs would've been a huge pain, at least current PS3 devs would've had fresh experience to use for a new system.

I see an issue though, AMD processors etc run pretty warm. Given how warm current consoles already run, that make me wander. Will the sound of fans and red and yellow lights dominate the next gen to begin with?
