I am sorry. I am terribly sorry, but I always wondered why the GEN was not always remembered for its rpgs, and while the SNES has tons that have not aged well, I look at my Genesis rpgs and I just don't see it. The genesis rpgs seemed to have aged pretty bad.

I can barely find Phantasy Star 2 playable.

I can't find Phantasy Star 3 playable at all.

I can handle Phantasy Star 4 at some points but a lot of the game has aged pretty bad.

Landstalker, which I barely consider an rpg, seems very bland and badly designed now. i find it hard to play for long period of time.

Light Crusader is extremely slow paced, and for a treasure game that is odd, but everything for even attacking and moving around the bland towns just seems boring. Like you're waiting for something to happen and nothing does.

    Hydlide. It's Hydlide.

Fatal Labyrinth.... Wow, unappealing art just hurts it way too much in my opinion.

Sword of Vermillion is like playing a Sega Master system game, but with Turbo-16 graphix (, it takes forever to even start the game, and like an above title the terrible art style just makes the game feel like it won't be fun anytime soon.

Arcus Odyssey. It feels like everything is tinted gray, and it also makes me wonder what they were thinking with the artstyle and other object designs because it look like SMS game. It makes the genesis look like it can't run any colors or something.

There's a lot more but these seem to be the more popular games, or at least some of them, so these should serve the point I am tryng to make. Do you think Genesis rpgs have aged well?

Oh and Gamespot removed the pun I made next to the Graphix and made the whole next part of my sentence in red because I have no idea.

Why do you think they aged bad? What are the aspects that doesn't permit you to enjoy these games? You haven't mentioned any.

Phantasy Star 2 is slow paced with bad dialogue and blurry art style. The design of the game is just really boring and seemed like it could be filled with much more, it feels like I am playing Phantasy Star one again, but clearer in color. The Sprites looked outdated as soon as I saw them. The enemies and grinding don't help much either.

Phantasy Star 3 is supposed to be a sequel to Phantasy Star 2 and be full of improvement, But it fail to do that for many reasons, first of all everything seems to be tinted in a grayish color. The whole games looks and feels like I am playing in an old photograph that's losing it's picture slowly. The battle system annoys the living hell out of me as well. Everything looks the same, mostly in the outworld or in towns, there are places that do not look the same, but everything in Phantasy Star 3 looks the same. Heck, everytown seems to be copy/pasted.

Phantasy Star 4. It's not that bad, but it just aged badly. The art style and designs of characters, building, and other objects are all much better than say, 3's in almost everyway. But the game has a pretty bad plot going on, and there is a high focus on grinding in this game, or as it seemed, I might be exaggerating a bit, but still. I would also like to add, the lack of sidequests, the lack of helpful NPC's, and the fail to balance the characters you can play as. The Balance really screws up once you lose what's her name when she dies. But there is another thing, excluding some areas, like say those futuristic bits and a few other places, a lot of areas seem to be tinted in brown and kind of feel the same, not to the extend of 3, but it makes the game feel like they could have done better. Also, they do copy/paste in this game a bit as well, although not as annoying, they should have gotten rid of most of it completely. Also the tints of brown, the genesis can do color, why have it like that? Especially in 3, where EVERYTHING seemed to be tinted in grey. Also 4's pacing during the story is just bad.

Did you read the parts where I talked about copy/pasting, terrible battle systems and slow paced movement? Because those were there to.

Thats part of their charm, a 2012 toyota is more advanced than a 1930 mercedes, but id still take the mercedes.

Phantasy Star IV is my favorite RPG of all time... just thought I'd throw that out there.

I think it's aged really well. The music is wonderful and horrifically catchy, the environments are pretty and varied, the manga style cutscenes are a really nice touch, and the story is absolutely epic!

Phantasy Star 2 is a great RPG for its time, and its still enjoyable. Phantasy Star 3 is a great game, I do not agree with you complaints about the way it looks or plays.

Sword of Vermillion is my favorite Genesis RPG. Its very unique, challenging, and fun. The 2D towns, 3D exploration, more mature storyline, and real time combat put it in a class of its own when it was released.

Are you also counting games like Shining Force I & II and Beyond Oasis? If so, yes - those games are phenomenal and they still hold up. But IMO, the best Sega RPGs were on Sega CD: Lunar I & II.

I was just about to say exactly this. There is also Popful Mail on Sega CD which is supposedly great but I've never played. Always loved the title though.

The SNES really was better for RPGs at the time--and I say this as someone who is still a big Genesis fan. That was kind of part of the charm of the 16-bit era is it seemed like the systems each really had a different niche. Nintendo was more RPGs, adventure games and platformers while Sega had the arcade style shmups and Beat-em-ups.

The question was if they hold up well by todays standards. Instead of disagreeing with him and providing counterpoints you agreed that the pacing, writing, and battle system was bad. I'm going to assume that you personally would jump into that 1930 Mercedes even if it was currently on fire, had the seats removed, and was driving around in a post WWI no mans land looking for any left over landmines but for anyone who is comparing the merits of the new vs the old your answer would be that they haven't aged well then right?

Lunar series definitely still good games, two of my favorite RPGs. Having just played Shining Force 1 that game absolutely does not hold up well over time, it would have felt very outdated just by Fire Emblem 3 and Shining Force 2 (which was much better designed but not much of a reason to take it over most later SRPGs). .

Begger Prince seemed good from what I played, I'll have to try the other two.

Good and funny game. More of a sidescroller action game with some RPG elements though.

there was also "Vay" and "Shining Force CD", along with the strategy-rpg "Dark Wizard", as well as western dungeon crawlers such as "Eye of the Beholder"

definitely some rpg goodness to be had on Sega-CD or CDX.

that said, "Pier Solar" still gets my vote for best Genesis RPG.
