So I'm looking for an RPG where the story is totally going to draw me in. I haven't felt this way since the final fantasy series (up to X) and the old school d and d, forgotten realms rpgs like planescape, baldur's gate. Preferably I'm looking for something dark, like in planescape, with some creepy death stuff, undead creatures, land of the dead that kind of thing. I also was a big fan of the prerendered art screens in the older square games before they joined enix.

I don't really care if they are new or old, just as long as they have a great dark story. I need something to keep my mind off of the stress in life and good stories have always done that, so I appreciate any suggestions. Preferably I'm looking for a game for pc, snes, or ps3. Thanks!

Probably not exactly what your looking for but if your looking for a great story try Heavy Rain. Its not exactly an RPG and certainly doesn't have the specific elements your looking for but if you want to get away from real life for a while I highly recommend it.

PS3 you can get White Knight or for a more darker tone even then that, Fallout series. More so 3 than New Vegas but both would do you in.

Dark souls! It may not have much narrative at all but the setting is dark and strange. Its an RPG with real time combat.

Persona 3 had probably the darkest story I've ever seen in a video game, though in terms of actual gameplay, it's kind of a hybrid dungeon crawler/sim game, but you get all the traditional JRPG battles.

Also, the story of the Xenosaga games isn't necessarily "dark," but it DOES get really heavy, and nothing has really come along like them since then.

Dark souls. It's not all about the story but it's definitely dark.

Like the others, I can't recommend Dark Souls enough. It sounds almost exactly like what you're looking for. True, it might not have much of a narrative, but it really, REALLY sucks you in. I also recommend Dragon Age and The Witcher Series, for PC. Make sure you get the Enhanced Edition for the latter.

I suggest Shadow Hearts, the game's setting is like a gothic victorian europe.

Witcher 2 makes all of the games mention look like sat morning cartoons, Tactics ogre let us cling together, final fantasy tactics war of the lions and Vagrant Story all have very mature storylines plus they are all written and directed by Yasumi Matsuno. Deus Ex 1 and 3, Fallout 1 and 2, Parasite Eve 1 and 2 are also very dark. Dark souls, Demon Souls are very good. Witcher 1 is also very dark and mature. Radiant Historia has a surprisingly dark storyline given its artstyle and storyline that deals with time travel. System Shock 1 and 2 might also be worth checking out they are alot like deus ex and have very dark storylines.

-Persona 3&4 (Primarily 4, that game is freakin' AMAZING!)

-Digital Devil Saga 1&2 (You HAVE to play them in order)

    -Fate/Extra

-Shadow Hearts 1&2 (Shadow Hearts 2 a.k.a. Covenant, is also amazing. They share similarities, but it's not necessary to play them in order)

Those are the only ones that I was able to think of off the top of my head, and there may be more that I'm forgetting, but the ones listed above are some of the darkest RPG's ever.

Maybe look into Drakan: The Ancients Gates for PS2. It's been a long time since I first played it.
