I think it is absolutely brilliant. I love the idea that on top of completing the game you are also trying to acquire a million coins, which seems like a ludicrous amount. Looking forward to this game even more than New Super Mario Bros. U which also looks great.

Well that's what it is... when its spelled right lol. What people need to stop doing, is applying a negative connotation to the word gimmick. Many people use it as a shot and many people take it as a shot, both are completely wrong. When it comes to it being in Mario, I'll see when I play it, for the time being it doesn't seem like it will have any impact on level design, its really just something for leaderboard chasing.

I won't know how I think about it until I hear the story behind it. Like.. why does mario want to collect so many coins? what does he care?.. Doesn't make much sense to me.. I know its a mario game and stories never really matter all that much but I have to have a reason as to why Im gonna wanna collect all these coins and I haven't really heard one yet.

Does it really need a reason though? Its just a fun new feature they decided to implement into the game simple as that

thing is, gimmick is somewhat of a negative term. the definition is essentially "something that's shoved on just for the sake of profits". the problem is the "shoved on" part. i doubt nintendo just said "COINS EVERYWHERE, BUY THE NEW GAME" and called it a day, especially when most mario games come with defining features of their own.

Two m's.... *groan* lol and I didn't mean gimmick in a bad way. I was just wondering if people thought this obvious coin feature in the game would benefit it.

Mario collecting coins is definitely a brand new thing. I am not sure how it will turn out.

I think it does. Coins have been in mario since forever.. So why out of nowhere, should Mario just have a crazy obsession with collecting coins? Why add new suits that give you coins? I just think it needs SOME sort of justification.. I mean it doesn't even need to be good, just give me a random excuse, like in Mario Sunshine.. Wouldn't it have been weird if you, Mario for no reason just had a waterpack and where expected to clean up an entire island? They atleast gave you a, oh well a paint clone that looks like you polluted the town now everyone blames you for it...

Its not a great story or a really strong reason but it was enough for me to go along with it. I don't think Ill feel like collecting a crazy amount of coins if there is no reason to do so.

The coins will likely guide the player through the levels, resulting in faster gameplay.

That's been a problem with every Mario game since Super Mario Bros. 3. Getting a Game Over has almost no ramifications anyway, so it doesn't really break the game if you get too many 1ups.

And there will be a simple story reason for the coin thing. Princess Peach was kidnapped and Bowser put her in a cage that will only open if you get 1 million coins. Or the castle will be foreclosed on and seized by the bank if Mario doesn't ante up.

Actually, those ideas are probably too good for a Mario game. I mean seriously, the story of 3D Land was that a storm blew all the raccoon leaves off the tail tree and Bowser kidnapped Peach.

Not only will you be getting easy lives from all the coins but also by the looks of the new trailer when you die too much you get a golden leaf which makes you an invincible racoon!

What ever happened to hard nintendo platformers?
