You believe FF13 will be considered a classic?

And I thought I had seen everything SW has to offer

The probability of FF13 becoming a classic is as high as me a buying a Lamborghini. I don't know in what world this guy lives (or under what rock but he has to be a lemming!) but FF13 is considered a bad game by most fans and if that werent true Square wouldn't have marketed FF13-2 as the game that fixed everything that was wrong in the first game. XD

Another thing to compare is that if FF13 would have been considered a good game by most then FF13-2 wouldn't have sold as bad as it did. The first game is close to 8 millions while the sequel is strugling to sell just 2 millions.

    That game was brilliant.

    Hope it's true.

If FF8 can become a classic, then FF13 can too. Also, it's funny how you claim that I live under a rock when you made the ridiculous assumption that "FF13 is considered to be a bad game by most fans." It's true that SE admitted its mistakes, but that shows how they take feedback seriously, and for a sequel, XIII-2 profited well.

Damn I hope this is true! This is the best sounding FF news I've heard in years.

From what I've seen it seems 1, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10 are regarded as the classics... maybe 5, but that's stretching it. People usually don't even acknowledge the existence of 2 and 3, 8 is still widely regarded as a bastard in the series, a lot of fans refuse to count an MMO and as much as I enjoyed 12 it tends to get ignored.

I really don't see XIII ever being regarded as a classic. Most of the FFs that do have that recognition got it instantly.

And before someone bashes this post, do realize I'm not speaking from personal preference at all, just observation.

Good post. All I can add is that if V would be considered as a "borderline" great entry, then XIII can make a fair argument as well, considering they run neck and neck in aggregate review scores (using V's remake, since it wasn't widely reviewed by non Japanese publications initially) and XIII trounced it in sales.

FFX always entertains me with the praise it receives. It's easily the most similar to XIII in the series, but no one flips out about its linear design. Perhaps it's because X was played when many here were just getting introduced to gaming. And (IMVHO) I'll take Vanille over Wakka every time.

IMO X had a better plot , a better combat systme , better leveling up system, better side missions and the world of spira felt like a " world" FFXIII felt way to static you interacted with no one the world was devoid of any character or soul. FFXIII was just passionless for me anyway.

I do think FFXIII gets a bit to much hate but X had alot more going for it that negated the linear structure and eventually you could go back to all the places you had visited with the airship

That could be it. It would be a very impressive game to new comers and it was impressive in general as an early PS2 title. I initially disliked X, but it grew on me after a while. I agree that its the most similar to XIII in layout, but it had just enough variation in content and a bit more freedom in general to keep the naysayers at bay.

That said I do remember thinking it was a bit linear. I kept wondering "when do I get an airship?"... "when will I see the world map?"

    I got over it though.

I suppose XIII could get classic status. Its tough to predict those things sometimes. When Wind Waker came out I NEVER thought it would receive the praise it does today.

Yeah, subjectivity reigns supreme on most of these. While you'd give all those categories to X, they get split up by me.

    Plot = X

Combat = XIII (by a landslide!!!)

Levelling system = Tie (and more similar than different. X might get a slight edge in that it's sphere grid is the basis of the crystarium, if you had to have a winner)

Side missions = X (though Blitzball Stank!!!!)

World = ... I wanna give it to XIII simply because of how beautiful and varied the worlds were, but honestly I haven't played X in long enough to compare the two fairly. Something I should really remedy, but I never felt an urge to replay X after my run. Perhaps the upcoming HD remake will prod me into action!

    Awesome point about Wind Waker.

It's only hearsay by me, but I swear pre XIII, X was one of the top three FFs in the opinions of the GS community. It was only after XIII was out, and the haters kept getting hit on the head that X and XIII were so similar that we started seeing people try to distance themselves from the game. I think the HD version is going to be... illuminating on this matter.

I don't personally put XIII at the top end of the main series. More like in the middle... right around X and above XII. It wasn't what I expected, but it entertained me better than any main series title since IX (Since we aren't allowed to speak of XI )

Hopefully they can replicate what they have done with FFXII but with better combat system, I don't want another boring MMO like combat system.

This is one of the dumbest complaints I see lobbed at FFXII. I hate MMOs, mostly because of the combat. I thought FFXII was great, mostly because of the combat.

Please show me an MMO that plays like FFXII and I'll be all over it.

If you dislike the combat that's fine, just say it. I know its not for everyone, but lumping it in with MMO combat doesn't make sense at all.

    1. Cool if true, although bigger =/= better. Not always. I would worry that SE is just going to add a LARGE NON-LINEAR WORLD for the sake of having one and shutting up FF fans, and not actually do anything very interesting with it said large world.

    2. FFXIII will NOT be considered a classic. A classic generally has universal praise and admiration, while having almost no hate or dislike, or atleast very little hate around the time it released. Chrono Trigger is a classic. FFXIII will not be one.
