Well you can probably do worse for the money and I doubt you can do much better for the money.
If your budget is strict and that's the top you may as well buy them and see what you think.
Of course this board will insist you spend at least £100, but for a lot of people that is too much for a 2.1 set.
On Avforum.no they won't advise you go for a 5.1 until you're willing to spend at least £1000.. even when your budget is £1000 a lot of them say its not worth it and try to convince to go over to a 2.1 then later upgrade to 5.1 :p But the minimum I would spend on a 5.1 is the cost of a DaytonT-amp, OR Lepai 2020A amp + Dayton book shelf speakjers / dayton sub. which runs for about $150-200 depending on which you choose.- Please wait. Ok, thanks for the responses. Ive been looking around and now I dont know whether I should get a 2.1 or 2.0 system. Do you guys have any ideas? I cant really spend much, so lets say my maximum budget is £50. Thanks- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

You'll also have to raise your budget a little bit. Oh and you'll have to buy used. Sorry but £50 is just not do-able, evne if its just a 2.0 stereo and its used.- Please wait. The best advice I can give you is to buy a seperate amplifier from a good company, like Rotel, NAD, Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, Cambridge, etc and then find a pair of bookshelf speakers made by an audiophile company, like Dayton, Wharferdale, etc.
http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29303960/recommend-pc-speakers-please.
I made plenty of great suggestions for amplifiers there, there's 10 of them to choose from, all of which will cost you less than £50 if you either buy them now or go around bidding on them. That's a great deal for the performance you get.
As for speakers I searched for wharferdale and found:
There are plenty of more, from this brand alone. Some prices are BIN (like the £25, £0 and £50 ones) others are current bid // starting bid. The point is that'll it'll cost you less than £50, its up to your to haggle the price to as low as the seller can go so you can get the best deal for your money!
If you look at the last link, you can get those Wharfedales BUY IT NOW for £25, and then for example this Rotel ampl, buy it now for £30:
There you go mate, 2.0 stereo setup for £55 ;) I'll challenge anyone to find a better deal lol
I was half-way wrong. if you raise your budget by 5 quid you can afford to buy that Rotel stereo amp + Wharfedale speakers. But if you don't want those exact two, you can always bid on one of the 10 amplifiers I found, and one of the 9 pair of speakers I found and pick and choose your own 2.0 stereo. But any of those 10 with any of those 9 will be a great deal that is a whole level or two above the new crap for £50 in the store today!!
You'll also need an RCA cable if you don't have one.
analog outputs --> select AUX/Tape/CD (it doesn't matter) --> RCA cable --> analog inputs on the TV.
these are thankfully dirt cheap, although you are likely to have an unused one in the home some where.
