Girls in gaming or even girls in games. More often than not this is a subject that is touched on only when a rift occurs in the gaming community. Be them busty babes sucking on plastic or hard working average mothers who just wanna have a fun frag. This week on Chalk Talk we ask are they nothing more than females looking desperately for attention in a social pool they find to be easy to navigate, or are they legitimate gamers? Is misogyny something that we should expect to see in this community or is it something that we should combat? Whatever perspective you choose to take, sound off in our roll call thread here once you've finished writing your blog.
Deadline to post a link to your Chalk Talk Submission is FRIDAY November 2nd at 10:00am PT
A few additional things to remember about your Chalk Talk Submission:

- Do not use altered text fonts, colors, and be aware of your formatting.
- Select at least one image to act as your "Cover Shot".

- Okay this is a topic that I can't not write about, I'll try not to make it overly long but this might take me a while to write.

Some opinions are wrong. This is one of them.

All the ladies below (mostly drawn by a certain awesome but, for better or worse, not-so-well known fan artist) are actual game characters, though not (necessarily) THAT kind of games if you are thinking about those.

The people on the "other" side of that divide - the "chauvinists" - would call such a statement "dumb" though. ;)
But do keep this in mind: in this era, people who are seen as mysogynostic get ostracised very quickly by a LOT of people - you only need to point them out. Then we will see which of them have the stubborn will to maintain their stance - I doubt that most would have the figurative balls for that (pun intended), and the punitive retribution that would come their way.

this topic is near and dear to me, having been a gamer since age 7 (that's 25 years now).
here's my entry, and this
is the picture i would want should it be chosen.
i would also like to suggest that the blog titles be used in the chalk talk articles if possible as that's often part of the blog's intro.

Here's my entry. Rather nervous about this one because, well, I'm male, so it was tough to write. Either way, cheers and enjoy.

[/QUOTE] Have to agree with this. Personally I believe video games should bring people together, not tear them apart. Whether you're a man or woman, black or white, incredibly hot or downright ugly, when we sign on we should all be one big happy family of gamers. Sure in a competitive match, trash talk is to be expected, thats almost a given in any form of competition, but outside the match we are all gamers, and therefore should be united as gamers. That's what I stand by, and that's my contribution, not only for female gamers, but all gamers.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

Great blogs so far everyone! Remember, this topic isn't limited simply to girl gamers. Feel free to also discuss their portrayal in video games as a medium and the impact it has on the way their viewed in the culture.

"There is more to a person than the body alone, many tend to refuse to see that" - Reina Beaumont
I'm female, please stop regarding me as male, I find that quite insulting and offensive, thank you.
I've already written about the topic in the past, and gotten a lot of hate for it from a lot of male gamers as well as female gamers who, for some odd reason, want things to stay the same.
I can write another blog out if required since it is a topic that I feel is important and not to be dismissed because of those who can't see beyond their egos. Although I'm not very good with writing within a tight word limit, 500 words is no-where near enough to cover the topic. And I've found that whenever I try to add images, Gamespot goes weird on me adn refuses to alow the blog to be posted.
My older ones, which have no images due to the way Gamespot acts up when I try, might be helpful.

- Oct 29, 2012 4:44 pm GMTI don't want to enter into this contest but I just wanted to write my summed-up stance here, because I hate this topic: (And frown whenever it's brought up) There are just GAMERS, when speaking about playing video games gender is irrelevant. Both boy or girl can enjoy, master and be passionate about games just the same. As for depiction: Females are often portrayed as hyper-sensitive emotionally unstable super-model slim busty babe princesses AND Men are often portrayed as aggressive insensitive arrogant muscular immature handsome white knights These are extremes of our imagination, and we must think this is what people find interesting or appealing and we simply do it because we can. Everyone is the victim, yet more often than not people emerge that act as if they're the most oppressed individual/group of people to have ever lived. This topic cannot be talked about on it's own, the whole culture of media and portrayal of humans as "objects" goes a lot deeper and is probably the longest running controversy in history. Discussing it as an issue in games alone is pointless.

This is the end...
My blog is about Bioshock 2 but one of the best female protagonists I've seen in a game in a long time is Zoe Castillo from Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. And that game contains plenty of other strong and believeable female characters besides her, too. It's a shame that it's so underrated.
Anyone whose interested in how female characters are portrayed in games should definitley check this one out.

- Alright finally done. http://uk.gamespot.com/users/lim_ak/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25997528 Found it really hard to find good images to use. So much more to say than I actually did but there had to be a cutoff somewhere. I might try to do another one of these at some point, definitely a topic that should be thought about more.
