I reported a post last week that contained name calling and a couple instances of swear filter bypassing (one swear word and one sexual orientation derogatory remark). The poster in the post acknowledged that their sole intent was to flame other users and start fights (this was not in SW, BTW). I reported it but it was "verified as acceptable 1 times", presumably by a moderator. I was under the impression that any one of these things would have been sufficient reason for a post to be moderated but perhaps I don't understand the policy as well as I thought. Can someone shed some light on this? If I'm mistaken than could someone provide some guidance as to where I'm going wrong, because the TOU strongly suggests that I'm not.

I don't know how to link directly to the message in question but there's the page of the thread it was on:

    Thanks in advance.

Flaming and trolling are now permitted under the new TOU since Nov 2011. The derogatory anti-gay slur he used however (phag) is not. That as well as racial slurs are still penalized (should report as offensive or even specific descriptions). I'm guessing based on the description of the report, the moderator who took action saw the flaming and deemed that as acceptable (it now is), while the slur missed his/her scan of the post, just 1 word amidst the bulk of the beefy paragraph. An honest mistake.

But I looked it over and recitified the infraction.

and btw, good job on not quoting the offensive portion of that users post. I take it you're aware we discourage full quotation to ensure the inappropriate content doesn't get propogated continuiously, so well done on that Just so you know, other than cutting the message short, you can quote mostly the full body of the message for having a frame of reference to the discussion, and simply replace any given offensive material with a simple *censored* tag in its place.

    Happy posting

Ah, gotcha. This is actually more what I was looking for rather than a re-evaluation of the moderation action. Although I figured at least one of the things in that post was over the line but I wasn't aware of the change to the ToU to permit flaming (it doesn't say that it -is- allowed, but now that I look through it again I see that it doesn't say that it isn't allowed anymore). This represents a big shift from when I first started posting on here so I just wanted some confirmation.

    So I guess that means...

One other question: Is it now acceptible to bypass the swear filter by replacing only a single letter in the word instead of the entire root word (i.e. "Fr@king" instead of "####ing")? I only ask because this was also a big no-no back in the day but it seems to be a more common practice nowadays.

Yeah, go ahead. The old rules on censoring were removed back when the Terms changed last year.
