New PS4 kits shipping now, AMD A10 used as base, reveal coming 'before E3!!!

-----------Blazed A Make Her Dance------------

Developers are currently taking receipt of a new PlayStation 4 dev kit, VG247 has been told today, with a final version slated to appear in January. Yes, itll have Blu-ray. No, it isnt being made in Japan.

Multiple sources have confirmed to VG247 today that a new version of the Orbis kit is now shipping to developers, and that its housed in a normal PC case.
There are to be four versions of the dev kit, we were told. A previous version was essentially just a graphics card. The version shipping now is a modified PC, and the third version, appearing in January, will be close to final spec. A final version will be delivered to developers next summer.
Some US developers attended a disclosure meeting at Sonys offices this week, with a further meeting to take place in the coming weeks. The purpose of the meeting is for Sony to tell studios what the machine is designed to do, to detail hardware and to show a set of presentations.
Our source told us that Sony is only calling the machine Orbis, and is not using the words PlayStation 4 in these meetings at all.
Orbis, we were told today, is based on the AMDs A10 APU series. An APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) is a combined CPU and GPU.
PS4s APU was described today as a derivative of existing A10 hardware. The hardware is based on A10 system and base platform.
The ultimate goal for the hardware, we were told, is for it to be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D with no problem, to create a machine thats powerful enough for today and tomorrows market.
The dev kits have either 8Gb or 16Gb of RAM. Deduce from that what you will.
The hardware is not being made in Japan, it was said.
When asked if PS4 will have an optical drive, specifically Blu-ray, our source responded: Of course it has. Weve been told the hard drive will be 256Gb as standard, but its not clear if itll be a normal HDD or a solid state drive.
We were told that Sonys aim with Orbis is to avoid problems involved in launching PS3 by creating something very affordable but that isnt a slouch.
The machine has WiFi and Ethernet connectivity and HDMI out. Our source said the was no difference between PlayStation 3 and Orbis input/output.
The UI, however, has been revamped. It was said today that players will now be able to press the PS button mid-game and travel anywhere on the system. An example given was buying DLC from the PS Store mid-game then seamlessly returning to play.
Theyre trying to make it as fluid as possible, our source said.
We were also told that the machine will be designed to accept system and product updates in the background, and that itll always be in standby mode. When you set the console up, we were told, youll be asked if you want to allow background downloads. You can, of course, disallow them.
No details have been given on the pad as yet. Confirmation is expected this month.
Orbis is expected to be announced at an event just before E3 next year.
I hope Sony don't rush and give a dodgy console just to keep in the console race.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.
- Well this is certainly interesting IF true. I could care less about 3D gaming, however, and my only "wish" for the next PS system is an easier architecture for developers to program like the 360 has so there isn't this quality gulf with third party games as there appears to be this gen. I'm tired of hearing about multiplat games being "superior" on 360 because Sony is stubborn with making their own crap harder for devs to program for.
This is a welcome addition. It's always annoying when you are playing a game and want to quickly check the marketplace or change something in the settings but have to exit the game to do so. Will be interesting to see the final product.

Weren't they touting the PS3 as a 1080p60fps machine before it launched too? Fool me once.
-
As long as they talked with some of the heavy hitters in the developmental game and are putting those recommendations to good use, I'm good. Make the platform as easy to program for and have enough juice to ensure we're not hearing the old, 'this techs old and a pain to work with' nonsense. There really should be no excuses this time around.
-
I also hope they tone down the 'media hub' direction game consoles seem to be taking. All I want to do with a video game console is play games. I already have a pretty damn good media hub, my PC. I know that's the way the industries blowing these days, but it doesn't have to.
-
I would like the Orbis/PS4 to do well, I'm planning on it being my only next gen machine, but they need to take their time and really get it right the first time. Look at the first next gen console out the gates. It has it's far share of issues.

Hopefully it's really really really really easy to dev for so BethesDUH can port functional games to it in the future.

Well if you think PS4 games will be 720p like PS3 then you fooling yourself :)

I know it's unlikely but if Sony extends its Playstation mobile open SDK to it's main console as well, it will seal the deal for Sony this next generation. We'll be able to see tons of user created content on powerful hardware not just mobile devices.

So no word yet about the controller? I'd really like to see the Dualshock get a redesign.

- Nov 21, 2012 5:17 pm GMTAfter reading previous rumors about 4K for PS4/Orbis and this article, there is something that gamers must understand. The target for rendering games is 1080p60 while the regular video output will support up to 4K native resolution. So you can play videos at that resolution but obviously not games unless they are small PS Store titles (i think). No official hardware announcements yet but in order for the next console to output 4K, i think it needs a dedicated GPU much more powerful than the one integrated to the APU. Just like the PS3 used 6800 Ultras (in the conference the CEO of Nvidia claimed it is more powerful than 2 of those GPUs well he meant it is similar in architecture to the 7800 GT), so the next generation PlayStation should have a GTX580 or the equivalent to AMD's. The real thing is people still compare the same GPUs as they are performing on a PC which is terribly wrong. Plus think about cramming a GPU in a console is like in the laptops with limited thermal output so you wont see a GPU that was for retail will be in a console.

It's functional but uncomfortable, to me at least.

Remember before the ps3 launched sony had a redesigned controller but everyone moaned and complained and called it every name under the sun until sony went back to their original pad design so i wont be holding my breath for anythin different.
As much as gamers moan about wanting something new and different if someone actually offers it to them they dont really want it at all.

Sony needs to take a good long look at the financial position they're in and come out with a good console at a good price and get it to market before everybody's already purchased their competitor's product. None of this stupid crap like 4K resolution etc. Just something that's easy for the multiplat dev's to program for, and spend their money on making great exclusive games for it, not absorbing the loss from selling a $900 console for $600.

That was due to the fact that the controller looked horribly uncomfortable. You were liable to incur carpal tunnel or tendinitis playing for long periods. If anyone forgot what it looks like.

I would be fine with a 10-15% increase in size. Not a wholesale tear down and revamp of the controller.

I was under the impression that was never a practical design they ever intended to release. It was merely a mock-up pic that got released along with the PS3 and, as per the overreaction of the Internet, people went crazy about it thinking it was a real controller Sony designed for the PS3.

It most likely was, but the reaction was evidence enough for sony to stick with what was working. I'm glad they did, though I may go third party for the PS4 controller.
