I recently got the Samsung Galaxy S3 and updated to Jelly Bean 4.1. I've been messing around with Google Now for about a month now and I have to say, it blows Siri out of the water. It's just ... wow. Check NBA scores? Easy peasy. Check movie tickets for the closest theatre? Easy peasy, it's all there. I don't even have to ask for it to look it up, they just ... show up when a game is on, when I'm near a theatre, etc. What's the weather? It's always there. When's the next bus? It's there for me.

I recently went on a trip to Montreal and I found it really useful, since it actually told me which spots are known for taking great pictures of landmarks and landscapes, and what places to check out in Montreal. Siri in comparison feels so utterly limited and well, useless. I'm curious to know whether or not Apple will try to compete with it. I know Jobs was opposed to competing with Siri as a search engine type deal but you really have to wonder.

I've never used siri, but since the release of the first 4.0 the Google Search function has been amazing.

I can tell my Samsung Galaxy at the time(now upgraded to a Nexus 4) "Find the nearest walgreens" and it would give me turn by turn directions instantly.

I started screwing around with it by asking things like... "How old is Tiger Woods" she'll answer you quick and precises and bring up a wiki article.

Yep, the one thing I really miss from my old Nexus S. It's kind of mind-boggling that the company reknown for its UI/UX work came up with Siri (who woulda thunk that people don't like talking to inanimate objects, especially when in public?) while the search engine people came up with the much more streamlined and intuitive Now.

I agree. The only downside is that it has almost completely stopped me from thinking for myself.

This is probably the one thing that everyone can agree on. That siri in no way can keep up with google now.

All US variants have got the jelly bean update as well now. Not sure about canadian and australian versions.

Yep I stopped using it in late December and never got Jelly Bean. I probably should have gotten a phone with the pure Google experience and not Touch Wiz.

There are plenty of roms available with the stock experience. Not liking a skin is a bad excuse when it comes to a phone as popular as the S3.

I saw all the comments about the Jelly Bean roms and most are missing features and have bugs which limit it's use. To be honest I think it's pretty bad for a company to release a phone and then expect you to download something else for it to work well, as you suggest. IMO, a good company should release products which work great out of the box and not require you to find your own OS to make it a decent phone.

If jellybean on the s3 is anything like jelly bean on the note 2, then it's neither buggy nor missing features. My only complaint is google now is tucked away in favor of the kind of dumb s-voice, but I've since remapped a double home press to google now.

It's still gross looking touchwiz, but its perfectly competent for daily use

No I mean the custom roms of Jelly Bean like "cyangenmod". The problem is that my S3 never got the official Samsung update, which is problematic since the custom roms all had issues.

Well here is the thing. The galaxy s3 did get the offical jelly bean update so now all of the s3's should be running offical jellybean as of now. What you are talking about now is probably 4.2 jellybean because that is the varient that is buggy as all hell on the gs3. As far as I know the only thing running 4.2 jellybean is the galaxy nexus and the nexus 4 but other than that the gs3 is on jellybean 4.1 I know Cyangenmod is working on a 4.2 update right now for the gs3 right now and that is just buggy as hell id admit. But 4.1 jellybean roms are pretty much perfect at this point since they are running off the vzw/tmobile/at&t/spring bases that were already released.
