I know that picking a GOTY is near impossible sometimes in the first place, but is there any indication of what you guys would have put second? Dating back to whenever you guys want, say when the current staff got together (unless that's too recent)?

They called it the greatest discovery in human history. The civilizations of the galaxy call it...

How Journey got GOTY is beyond me. That game was okay but not even close to GOTY material.

It shouldn't be beyond anyone. After all, we wrote lots of words and made lots of videos through the year explaining why we think Journey is amazing. And we aren't alone in our praise: writers the Internet over wrote many words and made lots of videos on the subject too, with the game being named Game of the Year by various organizations. We don't ask that you agree, of course; you may not like Journey, or at least, not like it as much as we did! But there is no shortage of explanation as to why so many players adore it.

To answer the TC, the decisions often come down to a few games, but in most cases, almost any of the nominees have a chance to win. We have heated discussions every year, of course. Our Halo Reach vs. Vanquish fight might be one of the most strenuous, and that was for the shooter category, not even the overall category! The year Demon's Souls won we gave a lot of consideration to Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed II as well, if I recall correctly. MGS4 vs. GTA IV was a close one, I should say. And the first time I was ever involved in discussions, I recall passionate arguments for Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Orange Box, and Bioshock. (2007 was a great year, looking back. I remember how strongly Alex felt about God of War 2, and how strongly I felt about Assassin's Creed.)

I don't know that we could narrow this year's choices down to a seconds place, but there were passionate fans of Journey, Spelunky, Walking Dead, and Dishonored. What a cool, interesting year when games like Journey, Halo 4, Spelunky, and Virtue's Last reward can exist on the same list!
