The Basics
Sonic: The Fighters essentially took Sonic characters - Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Espio, Bean, Fang, Bark, and others - and pit them against one another in a Virtua Fighter-style game. The arcade game was released in some US arcades and ran on the Sega's Model 2 arcade board. But the Sonic influence apparently wasn't lost, as many of the fighting moves would have similar to those in the Sonic game, such as spins and jumps. The game was commonly described as a rudimentary fighter. The Saturn version of the game was expected to be released in May of 1998.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The obvious answer is that Saturn had been laid to rest in the US, so there wasn't a market for the game. Several of the characters appeared in the Saturn game Fighters Megamix though.
